[SPEC] Old Town... wild eyed speculation of what it is We are Old Town. Or a town that exists in our "world".
Please note: there is absolutely no evidence to support this. This is just speculation. Not even a supported opinion of mine. Only... what if. (A simpler explanation may be that Old Town is simply a town by Perplex, but I'm just throwing this out there, and come back to it if it turns out true)
Perplex City is of another universe. This much I can gather, right? I'm fairly new here. So if I get anything wrong let me know.
The people of Perplex City obviously possess better technology than we do if they can communicate with another universe. So our universe would represent a primitive version of theirs.
And maybe Old Town is their term for the location of a place in our world that is their point of entry.
The girls want to get a certain pair of shoes. One of them says, "Do you know a shoe maker in Old Town that can make them?" (paraphrasing).
What if those ladies represent some sort of museum-type fascination of things of our world?
S'all I got. See, no evidence. Just... a maybe. And I would be happy if someone could show me evidence to dismiss this idea. Because I personally think it's a great theory, but it could be a red herring if evidence exists to contradict it.

well, the bit about the shoe maker in "old town" sounds reasonable (for such a wild spec), HOWEVER...
well, it seems that the perplex city academy itself is located in the old town, as indicated by the top right picture in indexB.html . which would mean that there would have to be a taversen square somewhere etc.
so, i personally would rate this spec not all too likely. but that's my personal opinion.

Well it is fun to speculate as we need to acquire knowledge! Though it seems that the address Taversen Square in the Old Town don't exist in this world.

Or is it a town in the region of Perplex and the City being the Capital, or even Old Town the capital!

Another universe, a parallel universe or even a gaseous formation near Proxima Centuri! Whatever it is it's not here! Try and google it!

Like UK mobile service Vs US mobile service! I guess you're right!

No doubt when the game kick starts we will be a little wiser keep on spec'in'

My understanding is this:
There is another universe, similar to ours.
In this universe there is a city called Perplex City, this is probably the New York of their world.
There is an ancient organisation called The Academy which is very powerful, it possibly controls Perplex City (it's like the council)
There is a secret project which is researching opening portals into our world. (I get this from the Gatehouse s)
They are studying our world.
The women have noticed some really fashionable shoes while studying our world (designed by Versace or whatever) and want them.
This is why they say:
'Who designed those fabulous shoes?' 'Oh, no-one *you'd* have heard of.' Hah!
No one in their world would know who Gucci was, only these women (who work for the secret project) have seen our world.
They want to find some patterns (templates) for the shoes so they can then take them to a shoemaker in Perplex City and get them made.
They obviously use the technology that they use to study our world to look at shoes etc. (Okay, I *know* this would be a gross misuse of project resources, but do you think we could try to get, I don't know, patterns for them )
My guess is that they left the equipment on (as it says in an email) and the Cube somehow got transported into our world.

The Academy i suspect is setup to research "the other dimension" aka us...
Why such a long title for a research into shoes....its sorta like a social studies or history lectures would use to describe ....well "the design and production of shoes". Also why would they have tours around the Academy.... like Buck Palace or the Houses of Parliment...or even a old university, basiclly something important must happen there, as suggested before it maybe central goverment down to a highly prestigous research laboratory (like CERN, MIT, or Parc Xerox).
The Academy are researching us, while the cube plays a vital role in the liftestyle of Perplexians, its not vital for this study....after all how would Sente get here?

It isn't The Academy that researches our world. I remember someone from the Gatehouses saying "we're glad to be working with The Adademy on this".
I guess they're supplying money and/or researchers.
I think The Academy is something like Oxford/Cambridge in that it's a historic tourist attraction but also a place of cutting edge research. We know it's benn going for 300 years or more but also that it's helping with this portal stuff.
I'm sure the PM went to Oxbridge, probably took a fair bit of inspiration from there.

Shoot, the Academy might not even know about it. Look at our world. Supposedly lots of projects get funded without even knowing what the project is about.

Open for speculation. I tend to think of the subject of multiverses as something not quite understood even by the most expert of experts of the field.
If Perplex exists in an alternate universe, I doubt it's as simple to view it as going up to Professor Urglestein's observatory and looking through his telescope, much less googling it.

if the cube was accidentally sent to us, then it maybe in our best interest to keep a hold of it as a bargaining tool to their universe

So you don't believe in the theory of multiverses? Why? It's okay. I just want to know.
Anyway, whether or not it's true, many works of fiction seem to use it. And this ARG is fiction right? So in the environment of this game, I think it'd be okay to adopt the scenario of a parallel universe. Even if you don't think it's true, it does sound like a cool idea does it not?
Don't try to argue the existence of Orcs when reading Lord of the Rings, now.

Heh, yeah, always worth bearing in mind that we do have free-will. Although Commandment 7 says we should help, perhaps we'll have an opportunity to choose who to help. It would be deeply cool if we had to pick sides - a little polarity and competition on the board could be fun - especially if it wasn't entirely clear which side was The Good Guys.

I do like the theory, like all things i prefer to lay certainty when it's in B&W [/quote]

It wasn't someone at the gatehouses (which do seem to be located "in" the Academy), it was someone at Project Syzygy. I think the Academy outsourced something to them. (link ).
I'm curious as to why you think that it isn't the Academy that researches our world. Was it just for that^ reason, or is there something else? Btw, I totally agree with all the rest of your reasoning.

For what it's worth, there's an open air museum in Denmark called 'The Old Town' (the English name)...
www.dengamleby.dk
No Taversen Square though. But Most danish surnames end in -sen. Just made me think...
