Got a curious email, this morning, at my ARG address.

That was it.

Except for the name leading to a UK band, I'm not finding much.

looks like it could be a phone number?
(102) 835-8980

Comes up as an invalid number when called. So that's not it.

1028 is the number of bytes in a kilobyte, right? that leaves 358980

Area codes cannot start with a "1" or a "0".

There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte.

Well, that scraps both theories. I dunno. It doesn't seem like typical spam. Maybe I'm just looking for something that isn't there.

could it be a scottish phone number? a quick check on scottish numbers show they're 11 digits, many starting with 01... this is 10 digits, perhaps the leading 0 isn't needed. *shrug*

That would fit with Kyle Falconer, born in Dundee, Scotland.

Subject 'a forgotten man'

The Forgotten Man is a book about the American great depression. Probably not related.

That isn't limited to Scotland, all UK numbers (with the exception of special rate, mobile, London and I think one other large city) begin with 01, and are 11 digits long.

Can't say I know where an 01028 number would go, though. ETA it seems 01028 isn't a valid UK area code.

If you sort those as two sets of five, stick a decimal after the second digit, and input them as GPS coordinates you wind up in the Arabian sea, off the coast of Somalia.

A strange reference on Playstation Home has led to the finding of:

http://www.alphazone1.com/

which looks like it has the potential to be slightly ARGish.

I thought I would put it out there for the experts to have a ponder over. Any ideas???

Has anyone on the PS site done all the hex conversion, unescaping, etc. to see the code. Looks like it wants to be a counter, to me.

Or am I all messed-up and the new Vista lappy is causing only me to see the initial gibberish.

What I see reminds me of code run through an obfuscator.

The site's been around since 2002 and a google search turns up some open directories.
http://www.alphazone1.com/midibox
http://www.alphazone1.com/tb-303
http://www.alphazone1.com/myspace
That last one leads to the site's owner on myspace, one Brian Castro. Not that he couldn't be putting on an ARG.

weird text message 2/16/09

moved this here, since it seems like a better idea to move this to this thread...

So, just a few minutes ago I got a weird text, unsure if its just me over thinking some odd mistake on someone's end but it seems very arg-y to me.
--------------
I got this at 11:23 pm from the number 3689:

deformationaiSPLATviennapiano.com / hi / GrandSlam stock Smybol: GAGO, Global Agrimed Gold digger

---------------

now I recently only really signed up for Rachel's walk (rachelswalk.com) and was rejected out of the voiceyourvoice 'The Day Is Coming' thing that never took off. Those are the only two places I could think that have my telephone number. aside from prior PMs I guess lol.

I looked up www.viennapiano.com and saw it was a NJ piano store which happens to be my home state.

Couldn't find any stock with the symbol GAGO and the above mis-spelling "Smybol" is how it was spelled in the text.

Wondering if anyone else has had any happenings with this site or something similar before I take the plunge and just e-mail the site about the deformationai contact.

I looked up the site also... nothing weird about the whois, it's been registered since 06, seems like a legit biz.

Just your standard pump and dump.
Buy a bunch of shares in a floundering company that probably should never have offered stock in the first place and then spam any and every channel you can to try and get the price up so you can then dump it.

http://spamnation.info/go/stock/GAGO.PK

Sure, it's up 200% in the last month, but if you tried to buy into it and get out with a quick profit, you couldn't do it fast enough to beat the fall.

http://quote.barchart.com/quote.asp?sym=GAGO&code=BSTK

They'll wait several months and then do it all over, again.

I'm sure the piano company isn't willingly letting the spammers use their domain in the spoofed headers and texted emails.
