Weird. I got two of these today:

That said, I'm pretty sure they're just spam.

day

Just got this 5 hours ago and recognized the format from posts here. Strange, because I only recently created this account strictly for this board/ARGs. (Incidentally, the only ARG I've used this account to interact with is Menance-Media.)

So. Yeah. Add "day" and "science" to the list.

I'm just curious (and I'm not trying to flamebait or anything... I'm honestly curious...) Why do we SPLAT out the email addresses of these spammers? Why would it be bad for other spammers to spam these spammers?

Wouldn't that be good? couldn't it potentially (with many iterations) slow down and increase the bandwidth costs for these ne're-do-wells?

Well, that really depends. Personally, I think this is just some unique phishing, checking which email addresses are active and which aren't. I also think the email addresses are randomized and spoofed. Trying to flood them wouldn't really help anything as they will either bounce or cause problems for people that aren't related to the scammers at all

The forum system* automagically splats out all @ signs from anything it recognizes as an email address. If you could figure out a way to distinguish between spammer and non...

My question is why everyone keeps posting the 7-bit encryption line. I thought that just had something to do with international font support?

And isn't the real sender buried somewhere in the headers? I agree that the visible "from" address is just as bogus as if they had culled your own address book (as some famous worms do).

ARGN gets a ton of these a day -- like, literally, 10 to 30.

Crazy...

Just checked my Gmail and was surprised to get my own.

Here's what it said:

Subject: stay

Content-Type: text/plain;
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit

grew

----

Strange because I use this mail for very few purposes... and the fact that it has also been mailed to other ARGists is strange indeed.

Huh.

I'm still 99% sure this is just spam (although, admittedly, I haven't gotten it at any of my non-ARG email addresses, including my Gmail ones). I deleted them. But it does seem odd for spam -- I mean, there's no attachment, so there's not a virus or anything, and there aren't any links in it, and there's no actual information in it either, so if it is spam, what's the point?

But if it were an ARG, I'm not sure whether this would be a brilliant or stupid way to start it.

[TRAILHEAD?] Bottomline Market Players

Ey up all.

Just received an email from phenomenaSPLATthemiracleofmakingmoney.net:

Quote:

SUBJECT:

BODY:

That web address redirects to http://bottomline-market-players.com, which has a sinister intro before going into the main site, which appears to be a stock market type thing.

Intriguing...

merged this with the trailhead or spam thread ~ varin
