Weird e-mails

I've just received a couple of very odd e-mails, one from "Dinah Bolton" and one from "Maude Weeks". They have the same format - some senseless text and a gif image with some company anouncement on it. Here's the text to the first e-mail:
Quote:

I believe these unusual emails are known to the enlightened few as "spam."

(The random words are to trick spam filters into thinking they're legitimate. For instance.)

Somewhere I saw that they do this to see if its a legitimate email address (otherwise it would bounce) and then it can be added to a list to be sold to commercial (or whoever) outlets. But that seems a bit odd, 'cos most of mine come to my email address thats a tech line for our company and is published freely.

Looks like either there is more coming or it got cutoff during transmission.

It's the octal values for ASCII representations of "0", "1" and "-"

060 = 0
061 = 1
055 = -

String it all together, correct a couple of transpositional errors and you get the binary:
Code:
01010101001100100100011000110010010110100101001101000010
00110101011000100011001101010110011110010100100101001000
01001110011101110101101001010111010101100110101001100001
01000111010101100111101001001100011001110011000001001011
01000100010100010111000001010101011000010100011101010110
0011010101011000

After removing the "-" characters.

Conversion of this Binary to ASCII gives:
Code:
U2F2ZSB5b3VyIHNwZWVjaGVzLg0KDQpUaGV5X

Hyexistenz saw it as Base64 encoded data in chat.

Conversion of this Base64 to ASCII gives:
Code:
Save your speeches.

[ARG or Phisher?] JFE STEEL OFFER

i read the email, had a laugh, and then did some research. it was just before i dismissed it as a lame phishing attempt that i remembered ARGs, and figured i might as well see what you guys thought (i should note that i haven't been involved in the arg community in ages and never really played a game, so if this is someone trying to use me for a trailhead they chose a poor medium).

entire email is copied below (i removed the email adresses)

This mail is serving as an invitation to treat with the above named company.

JFE Steel Corporation was established on April 1, 2003. Our goal is to become an "excellent company" in the 21st century by fulfilling our basic corporate mission of "contributing to society with the world's highest technology."

Steel products possess excellent properties and for many centuries have played an important role as a basic material supporting industry and society in a wide range of applications. Because many of the world's countries require siginificant quantities of steel to create a more livable society and achieve continuing growth, a large increase in global steel demand is expected well into the new century. This means that steel products will continue to be necessary to society as a whole..

Due to the increase in demand of our products in America, Canada, Asia, Middle east and Europe we have decided to move our products fully into the above continent. By so doing, we are se arching for reliable persons/companies who can act as a COLLECTION AGENT who can help us establish a medium of getting to our customers in America, Canada, Asia, Middle east and Europe.

Note that, if finally aprroved as our collection agent, you are entitled to 10% of whatever amount you receive from customers who are making payments for outstanding debt on behalf of the company. Our account officer will convey to you the medium which you will use to remit any funds received on our behalf.

If you are interested in being a COLLECTION AGENT in the above location and your locality, please get back to me via my personal email (********@japan.com) with the following informations below:

(1)Full names:
(2)Complete Residence/office address:
(3)Tele/cell numbers:
(4)Occupation:
(5)Sex:

Right away there are some odd things about this email. it claims to be from the third largest steel manufacturer in the world, but uses an email from (what i'm assuming is) a japanese free email site, and tells me to reply to the presidents personal email, which is on japan.com, which (as far as i can tell) is an entirely english site with information about japan.

The man in the picture really is Hajime Baba, and he really is the president. He seems to be making a personal offer to me, an american teenager, of work as an "COLLECTION AGENT" (collectng "outstanding debt"... ie. strong-arming). It say's in the email that the company was fromed on April 1st, 2003, but it was actually formed in 2002, and the company motto talks about the most innovative technology, not the "highest" (although this is a small thing). Also, obviously, there is an ad at the bottom of the email (one of the reasons i assumed eyou.com was a free email service).

wondeirng what others think of this? i seem to be a big target for phishing attempts (i've gotten three or four, and my dad on the same computer got one), and i would have dismissed this immediately, if not for the odd date change (april fools day?), worrying job description, and the use of a real company. normally these types of things have either non-existent charities or "we need to use your bank account to syphon funds from an illegal hacker child porn meth ring, and your patriotism will be rewarded". This one implies that i would actually have to do something, which kinda destroys the point of a phishing scam, right?

here's his pic;

it went in between "(6)Age:" and his name/title (which just noticed isn't capitalised...).

Dude: pretty sure this is spam. I imagine the scam would work either by demanding some money from you first (and then disappearing into the night) or it's a way to launder stolen/counterfeit cheques (you cash them, you transfer the money to them, the the money disappears from your account.)

Sounds like a variation of advanced fee fraud (AKA the 419 or Nigerian email scam). Probably if you followed it up you'd have to pay for training courses and suchlike before you could start earning your mega income.

Oh man, that site's great. Why are these scammers always so damn stupid? It's like they're 14 year old kids or adults that are too messed up to get a job so they think that they'll find people that are even dumber than they are. I'm having a riot reading this one

i dunno, it seemed to me like the nature of the job being offered and all the wierd little mistakes (particularly the April Fools Day thing) pushed this thing into "wtf" territory. the fact that it was an apparent phishing attempt that insured i would have to work, and didn't come straight out and promise me buckets of cash also made me give it a second glance.

I got this email today, thought I'd put it on here to see what people think of it...

Does the policeman hunt mad people or does he hunt sane people ??
(even better he hunts patology) The policeman hunts mad people, or he would
be mad, by definiton. So there should be total identity, and unity of
action, by the policeman, the general, the medical doctor, so we will not
say anymore that a raper is a sane human. We can show
why also crimes against the patrimony are not physiological conducts (if
evrybody would go doing robberies..what would happen?)

A conduct can be pathological (biological group self-destructive activity)
or non pathological (phisiological), no external or middle case is expected.
90% of the people who killed a parent is declared mentally healthful, this
means: non pathological conduct, phisiological conduct (genetic or non
genetic), good doctor, not vector of functional or anatomical suffering.

Medicine is an exact science, jurisprudence is an exact science. Enemies and
friends: of the mental hygiene only, war between doctors isn't expected
value. "Fighting with islam against the devil" : this information is
harmless and profitable.

Siegmund Freud lies not knowing to be lying: he is a conceptual pedophile
who says children has sexual attraction for parent (edipus) and that mind is
partitioned in 3 parts (ego superego es). False premiss brings wrong result:
like Freud says, cognitive error is associated with pathological conduct.

"All fine at home? Do your parents act with you like with friends?": the
medical doctor must suggest this or enhanced reflection to the habitants,
for excluding non-genetic behavioral epidemics. Slapping child is a crime
and a mania, like by the general rule, "if child doesn't born genetically
stupid, handicapped, diseased, socially dangerous". Earth's habitants kill
gays but children don't born gays, habitants corrupt and kill children
doing a "sacrifice to the devil": this non genetic epidemic is familiarly
but not geneticaly transmitted.

God created phisiology and patology and gave you the chance to choice.
With baptism christians forgive themselfs from god's sentence.

1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number;
fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of
the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the
whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be
yours for food.
1:30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of
the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-everything that has
the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

If vegetarian diet gives longer and better life than non-vegetarian diet,
non-vegetarian diet is alimentary behavior pathology. Eating another
human is a behavioral disturb; a cow has 96,5% dna perfectly matching
with human dna. I am racist: i think animals is inferior race, so i don't
have to eat cadavers, thing that induce a phisiological genetic reflex :
vomiting.

Both the "call for emergencies" and the Alice in Wonderland related title make me think that there's maybe more to this than meets the eye. Any ideas?
Kristofski

Edit:Just thought, the line "The policeman hunts mad people, or he would
be mad, by definiton" also seems like and Alice-in-wonderland-ism, from when she's talking to the cheshire cat and he's using logic to prove that everyone is mad. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
