email?

I got a wierd email today. At first I thought it was just some advertisement but then I scrolled down and this was at the bottom

Quote:
Why, that she didnt hold all the cards after all - that I had a certain passive hold over her.
Hanging from the lowest branch of this tree was an old-fashioned pair of blued steel handcuffs.
He tried and saw the brownish droplets of Betadine flying from the blade of the electric knife.
Why, that she didnt hold all the cards after all - that I had a certain passive hold over her.

the email is MortonZCorneliussidelineSPLATslashdot.org

The ad is something for watches but when you rollover the image you get this site... http://emptyevightonetwo.com and you get dilettante as the description. (Like the brown tiny box that pops up when you rollover a link.

I haven't gone to the site because I've had some issues in the past with clicking on unknown links. Completly messed up my computer so I'm very cautious now. This is probably spam but just making sure.

spam

I haven't clicked on that link yet either. I did some research first. The registry is odd, in that the nameserver doesn't resolve. Also, the owner appears to be in Canada, but a traceroute to the domain goes to China. I vote for spam. (I wasn't sure what you meant about the tooltip, was that something on the watches site from the email? You didn't reference it.)

Spam these days are getting more sophisticated to get through the filters. Using jpgs for example. Or adding written text that has no spammy words (like exerpts from stories). Think about the account to which it was sent, and the context. Create a separate account JUST for ARGs. That is the only email you give out for ARGs. Helps cut through the noise.

The Reindeer Games
E-mails from Elves

Received the following:

Hello there! My name is Snowball McJinglebell, and I'm a Christmas Elf!

I don't want to give too much away, but this year we at the North Pole have started the first ever Reindeer Games for humans!

If you're interested in playing the Games, then just click this link to find the rules and your first hint:

Merry December!

Think it might be worth investigating (santa hat emoticon here)

[/edit] Sorry Rowan Smile I did search, honest....but it may have been a little cursory...Snowball's very chatty for an elf.

I actualy have 4 account for that reason....one i sign up to stuff for, one for registering, one for personal email and one for ARG's....

Only ever check 2 of them....cuts out on the spam BIG time.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Maybe it was just a wrong number?

http://www.fonefinder.net/ is a handy tool. It tells me:

505-971-xxxx ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- WIRELESS PROV.

It's really too little info to go on.

I would follow up and try to get ahold of whomever called you--especially if you've given our your Phone # for ARGs in the past. It sounds very suspicious; but even if its just a wrong number, it'd be courteous to let the person know they dialed the wrong #...

Got two calls last night from someone at 585-365-8270 on my ip-relay #, which I only mentioned in one place... anyone call it? The relay said the person wasn't responding and they hung up both times. Wrong number?
(ip-relay is a free voice to IM service)

Well the reason it's weird to me is this. I live in NJ. I have given my cell # in ARG's before...I cant call back though, my cell is not outgoing long distance...so who wants to do me a favor, call New Mexico and find out what it is Very Happy?
