The note in the briefcase is a bible verse. The specific verse is Isaiah 14:29-32.

If Redford got the note out of the briefcase, why would he need to take it to Leroy, the locksmith? He obviously got it open, already.

This blog style and it being in SF reminds me of Emperor Norton.

I spotted that too. Maybe we should just ask him.

I asked directly. But it also occurs to me as odd/amusing that he says he should keep the thing a secret... but he's posting it on his public blog. Um, counterintuitive much? Smile Still, without him doing that, we'd have nothing to play with. Smile

I shot him off an email suggesting that he try 14-29-32 as a combination on the lock.

Honestly, I really liked reading the blog. It was neat to see this poor guy's story unfold like that. I can't wait to see where this game goes; I hope that his background doesn't fade away as the game (?) progresses.

Edit:

I got an email from Redford.

Redkidk,
Hi. I appreciate your contacting me. I REALLY appreciate it! I haven't gone back to my blog yet, but I will check it out. The briefcase has two combo locks with four tumblers. I will try the combination, and then get back to you.

I am really ignorant about the bible. My parents were hippies, if you couldn't guess. Our place of worship was Mt. Tamalpais and the Sierras. Did a lot of hiking.

Thanks again. I will be checking in tomorrow, after work. Bicycle delivery work doesn't stop on Saturdays, but one of the best things is I get Sundays off every week. Arnie, my boss, is too cheap to pay us for Sundays.

Take care,
Redford

Looks like the breifcase has been opened. Some neat stuff in there. I'm going to be working of some of the number stuff.

Edit: Think I've got something. The numbers from the code refer to bible verses. 1st refers to Genesis, 2nd to Exodus 3rd to Lectivus, ect.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Genesis 3:1
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

Genesis 6:1
"When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,"

Genesis 6:4
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown."

And Thusforth. You get the idea.

Edit: OR, it could be refering to the Hans Christian Anderson book, if so then I'm stuck. OMG! I'm so stupid! the name on the code is the guy who edited the book! Embarassed

Yeah, I agree; it's probably a book cipher, referring to line number/word number, then word/letter. Unfortunately, it seems as though we need that exact copy of the book (because of the editor, edition, etc.). The library's closed tomorrow, Sunday; I'll see if I can get a copy of that book from the library on Monday, if someone hasn't already solved it by then.

I may be wrong, but I cannot find any information stating that Jack Zipes edited the HCA book pictured on Redford's blog.

I see that Zipes translated and /or edited many other books of fairy tales and stories, but I haven't found him mentioned for this one. Also, the coded paper is titled HCA Shadow (J. Zipes). Perhaps the story needed in the book is The Shadow.

There are a few editions of the book:

Hans Christian Andersen, The Complete Fairy Tales and Stories (Paperback)
translated by Erik Christian Haugaard, foreword by Virginia Haviland.
Publisher: Anchor; Reprint edition (Aug 9 1983) ISBN-10: 0385189516

Andersen, Hans Christian. The Complete Fairy Tales and Stories. Trans. Erik Christian Haugaard. New York: Anchor Books of A Division of Random House, c.1974 (ISBN: 0385189516)

also by Doubleday Publishing, 1974 (hardcover) (ISBN: 0385019017)

Hmm. This looks interesting. Nothing to add so far (other than general agreement about the crumpled paper being in Arabic), but I think I'll join in.

Zipes has a book called Spells of Enchantment: The Wondrous Fairy Tales of Western Culture which contains the story "The Shadow" by Hans Christian Andersen. He uses the version translated by Jean Hersholt in this book, so our answer is probably in this translation. His translation can be found here.

What stands out to me is the code is the number 21 by itself with no second number. Is this one letter on a line by itself, a single word on the line or a typographical error?

I'm not a blogspot member, but couldn't someone just tell him how to use a book cipher on the copy he has? Or ask him for the ISBN number?

Email from Zipes

Email confirmation from Zipes himself that he did indeed not edit the book in question.

Quote:
Dear XXXXX,

No, I am not the editor of the book that you have cited. I did edit another book of Andersen's fairy tales that is due out in April, published by Barnes & Noble, in New York.

Hope this information helps you.

Sincerely,

Jack Zipes

Seriously? You actually emailed Mr. Zipes to find out about the book?

That is freaking awesome. Rock On
