From what I understand of these things, you get points, often various and arbitrary, when you actually make the reference. If you recognize the reference, then you can award points. You can also award points if you understand an obscure reference has been made. However, if you are wrong about the reference by either citing it incorrectly or seeing one when one actually isn't there, then your own reference points are taken away.

Not yet having a Live connection, I can appreciate the skill necessary to make the other team do all the dying, but what does an "assist" refer to? Getting in a few good rounds on the target before someone else provides the coup de grace?
