You can! Who knows? Maybe it'll become useful! I just think it's kinda kludgy.

That's all.

Use, it, though! If you want!

ok...news...
I'm on a mission...
there's a small... though remote... possibility... I might be able to squeeze a trip in that weekend... except for transport...
the plans I thought may be that weekend don't look to be happening... I may be able to cover the cost of a night or two hotel, and a bit o spending money...
if this is all possible, I just need to figure out transport... it will, however, be a busy week... and I'd likely have to get another vacation day for the 13th, additional to a vacation day for the 11th for other plans - after I already took April 1st off, and I'm taking a week off in July...

like I said... a mission... the door is only open a crack, but at least it's open...

I don't know if Chicago will be able to handle the collective awesomeness, Chai-Gon Jinn.

Though it may cause a space time collapse, it's getting harder and harder to no be completely and utterly financially irresposible and attend the Chicago meet. I think I'll be selling a kidney, but my chances of attendance have climbed back up to 91.25%...

And funny on the Chai-Gon Jinn, jinx.

Well, it's getting closer and closer! I'm now officially looking for a hotel to stay. I'm thinking about using hotwire.com to get a good deal. Don't know if you guys know about it, so let me explain how it works. When you search for a hotel on their website, you have to specify the area (out of more than 15) you want the hotel, number of adults and dates. It'll give you a list of hotels, with info like number of stars, amenities and sometimes, user reviews. It'll also show the price, but it'll not show the hotel name or address. If you accept the offer, you have to pay right there and only then, they'll give you the hotel name and address.

I'm not going to say it's the best thing ever, since I've only used it once, but I got a very good deal on a 4-star hotel in downtown Toronto after a friend of mine convinced me to use it. He swears by it and uses it all the time. Since I didn't have any problems on the first time I used it, I'm thinking about using it again.

Now the question is which Chicago area should I look into? After talking to Krystyn a bit about it, it seems that Downtown and Airport area should both be good. But where are all the beekeepers staying? Do you guys have hotels already? It would be cool to stay close, if not on the same hotel! I know INCyr is staying close to the airport. Anyone else has hotel room reserved already?

I do: the Red Roof Inn, on Ontario and Michigan. My average rate was $140CAD/night (~$110USD) though rates appear to be creeping up right now as the day gets closer.

I picked it because it's downtown, and it's only 6 blocks (if I counted that right) from the Fogo de Chao. An easy walk to the first scheduled event, and really close to most of the other places talked about. Or to Chicago Transit, anyway. (And because I couldn't afford the $250USD/night that my first choice would've cost...)

I also really recommend the system maps at transitchicago.com, to sort of gauge where ya wanna go in the city, and how easy it will be by CTA.

Also, there's been discussion of having us go to Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind on Friday night, now, and then do some sort of karaoke thing on Saturday.

How does that sound to peeps?

Or, if you absolutely, positively MUST take it to the next level...

http://www.keyhole.com

It's Google maps on steroids. Well, it's Google anyway... and I suspect that this is where they're getting a lot of their map photography.

A co-worker showed me my hotel with this. In some places, like Chicago, it's mapped down to a one foot resolution. I thought I was looking at someone's swimming pool in one shot, only to find out that it was their hot tub. Shocked (cue Sting: "Every breath you take...")

-- Steve now makes a priority internal memo; "must remember to always wear pants when on the balcony."

Edit: correction, some places are mapped down to a three inch resolution, notably parts of San Diego, Las Vegas and Cambridge, MA. New York City, however, is only to 0.7 meter resolution.
