Birthday Puzzle Trail

A lot of people in #unfiction have been having fun at this - so I thought I'd open it up to everyone now that it's been solved by the birthday boy. Keep in mind it's rather silly now and then and it was designed mainly to keep a certain whiner occupied for a day or two.

Do it! It's totally awesome! Best idea for a webtrail ever!

Can I first ask how it works? Do you have to put the 'password' in the bar at the top like in some others?

I assume - not a password but a new url (often a different page on the same site) based on the clue-age in the page you're looking at. Nothing in the source, so I assume the next page is based on the answer to the question "who sent you here". The answer is not Rowan72. I think.

takes you to an index. the links on the page make letters change, as in when ya click on a link and look at the bottom of the window is, where ur progress bar should be, you see that it says somethin like S=A and things like that. i guess we gotta match the letters?

Well at least you got something other than the 404...

I think this is just part of the html for the columns. All four of the link URLs end with a letter that matches the column name: Name/Last Modified/Size/Description=N/M/S/D and they each toggle back and and forth between =A and =D. /AD gets you a 404. As does /DA

/weasel gets you the weasel (well, presumably ferret) photo album.

Did someone other than rowan start this trail?

Don't forget to try other file extensions...

ohmigosh, no! That's just the directory listing page, for which the server has made everything hidden -- you don't really want to see the contents of the game that way, do you? The "letters" are just how the page knows to refresh and sort the columns (if there was any visible content under those column headings).

Go back to the trailhead. Your first screen should be a page of numbers. Solve them or proceed to the next page -- you should have noticed the link -- and remember to view the source code of every page.

ok, so the numbers (as far as I can tell) aren't ascii, or an ip address.

I'm lost with this one. I can't think of what to try next.
My brain just doesn't want to think of possible solving mechanisms for some reason. any hints forthcoming?

Well, it certainly looks like ASCII, doesn't it?

But there's also another Answer.
