Sarah Kiddo.... The book!

For those of you who enjoyed playing/watching/hearing about/blatantly ignoring the Sarah kiddo ARG...
The first two chapters of a book in progress are up on Sarah's old site, www.saravella.blogspot.com
EDIT: oop, actually its here www.saravellainvestigation.blogspot.com

Check 'em out and leave a comment...

Please excuse:
a) they're poorly edited... I need to do a better job on spacing
b) it has only faintly to do with Sarah at this point

Still, if you ever wanted to know just WHAT did happen on October 15th...
This is a good place to start
~Sarah

Well, you guys inspired me to write as much as you did, I don't see why not... Very Happy

I have a lot of Ch. 3 done, and I'm working on writing more, but its been slow... Though, again, you guys might just inspire me to keep it up (i'm working on turning the comments back on)

I can't post the whole book there cuz of the whole plagarism thing, but I'll give you, at the very least, some outlines as to what goes on in some of the final chapters... but I won't ruin any surprises! That I'll save for the book...
If I can publish it...
which I'm sure I can get a few of you guys to convince some publisher to do, depending on how much you want to know the SUPER SECRET TWIST ENDING WHERE THEY"RE ALL ALIENS AND SARAH'S DOG...
but alas, I've said too much already

...it's the sweetest drop...

Rock and Roll!
It's actually pretty easy to publish now, although it often involves a bit of cash.
I'm a big DIY guy so I have a few connections in Sacramento who can help, but I got nadda in D.C. Keep posting here though and I'm sure one of these geniuses will come up with some way to hack into Penguin Publishing and run off 40,000 copies of your book.

This is the part that scares me about the plaigarism. Also, I know there are publishing companies you can pay to publish your book... but these deals often work better if they are actually the ones paying you.
Still, thanks, I am considering asking a few publishing companies, if only to stay ahead of any idea-stealers.
I mean, this wouldn't hold up in court, me posting here and stuff, *especially* since I'm not even posting my name... but I'm sure you good folks could help me arrange something if my story was stolen. :cough: :hitman: :cough:
ahem

...only the lonely know why I cry....

If you're really worried about it you should look into getting a copyright. Then you could continue posting online, YAY!!
Of course this costs money, but you can pretty much copyright any original piece of work you've written. (It can't just be an idea in your head.)
I have a professor who is writing a book. He's actually had his manuscript copyrighted several times and it's not even completed, so I assume this means you can copyright a work in progress.

Here is the copyright link:

At the same time, though:

Quote:
The way in which copyright protection is secured is frequently misunderstood. No publication or registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright.

i.e: If you've created it first, it's yours. You don't necessarily need to do anything else. You should declare the fact it's copywritten to you on the website if you don't already, although that's a misconception too - just because something doesn't say "copyright" doesn't mean it's fair game.

Of course you have to prove you did it yourself *first* in the event of any challenge - one way to do that extremely cheaply is by sticking it an envelope and then posting it to yourself so the date on the postmark will show when it was sent.

I don't think this is considered a legally definitive proof any longer. But you are right about copyright. The act of creation automatically conveys copyright of your words. Your ideas, however, can't be copyrighted.

Registering your copyright, although not strictly required, does provide proof.

With all that being said, if someone steals your copyrighted work, bringing suit is expensive and you would need to demonstrate damages (i.e. lost sales) to get any kind of meaningful compensation. If you are intending to sell this, don't put it online unless you are pretty sure you can't get it published through a major channel (which is pretty near impossible without an agent). If the work is short, you may do well submitting it to places that publish short fiction. They tend to be more open to accepting well written works from previously unknown authors.

ymmv.

Thanks for all your help, guys!
I'm not sure about publishing it, nor am I sure about how long its gonna be, but I know once I finish it I will certainly be looking into publishing it. I have that whole "only 17" thing going on, so if its good enough they might publish me b/c I'm a young author.
Other than that, we'll just have to wait and see,
but I'll keep you updated

You can always use something like CafePress Publishing.

They only charge you for copies that are sold, and you retain copyright while at the same time getting your words in actual, physical books.
