[Xbox] Power Cord Recall http://tinyurl.com/3rqkh
Apparently there are 14.1 million Xbox power cords out there waiting to start fires... If your console was made before Oct. 23, 2003 (the date is more recent in Eurpoe) you're involved.
Microsoft is offering a free replacement though. Link to that offer is in the article.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely be sending in for a replacement on mine.

I always thought my Xbox generated too much heat when I left it on after a DVD finished without me being there... so much so that I would always try to leave the glass door on the electronics cabinet where I keep it open when playing a DVD (for games it has to be open die to controllers). I thought it was because it would feed warm air into the digital cable box that sits on the shelf above it, and the combination just kept getting hotter and hotter.
Finally, my Xbox gave out about a month ago (the weird problem where the box won't boot and give you the "Xbox needs service" screen. I got a ticket number from MS and I'm supposed to send it in (out of warranty of course), but now I suspect this defective cable deal is to blame. You think I have case here? I mean, would MS be resposible for cable-related damage to the Xbox itself even if the warranty has expired?

We bought the 1st generation of Xboxs that had power supply problems
ours eventually went out and we had to buy a part from china and replace it.. it was cheap and i was too lazy to send it to microsoft.. you could have the same problem as we did.. how old is your xbox?

you could very well have the power supply problem.. Get the cord since they are giving them away but if one day you get up and your xbox wont turn on i'd look into getting a new power supply and replacing it. they are pretty cheap and its not hard at all to replace.

FYI:
Just found this on Xbox-Scene.com (great website for those who have never seen it...):

North American Xbox owners have already began to recieve their replacement power cords. These new cords are on the bulky side, and plastered with warning messages and instructions which appear to be made for the kind of person who would stick a fork inside a socket.
However, there appears to be some discussion as to the true intention of Microsoft. G0t M4xx 21 explains his theory:
G0t M4xx 21 wrote:
The real problem is the Foxlink power supply. There have been numerous reports of "loose power connectors" in xboxes, and the cause of this is that the solder joints on the PSU have actually broken where the connector mounts to the board, which can result in the xbox not powering on, or possibly even sparks, smoke, and fire.
So, instead of taking the costly duty of recalling all older xboxes, what do they do? They give you a power cord with this huge GFI thing. This in no way will solve the problem, it is merely a bandaid. So, when your PSU sparks and shorts out, it just trips a switch instead of catching fire, but your xbox still doesn't work.

Yep I got my replacement cord today. I don't think it'll actually fit where I have everything plugged in, so I guess its fire hazard time for me...

Great site indeed!
I still didn't order mine. After seeing how big this new cord is, I'm having second thoughts! It's as big as Krystyn's duke controller!!

Don't make fun of the duke!! If I wanted to play using a small controller, I would buy a PS2.
