My vote remains for either Thirsty Bear or Max's Diner.

They both have full bars that serve (adult) beverages.

Strike Max's Diner. I was just down at the IMAX Theatre this evening and afterwards we thought we'd go to Max's, but alas, it is GONE.

There are a few places inside the Sony Metreon, but I do not know how group-friendly they are, having never been to any of them.

Oh, there is also the Fourth Street Bar and Deli on the corner of 4th and Mission (Marriott Hotel). That was where we met before the Combat Training session in November.

That and Thirsty Bear, on Howard near 3rd, are my recommendations.

Hi, it's me again. I keep posting in here.

catherwood mentioned to me that she was interested in a pub, and while Thirsty Bear is a brew pub, it is not a pub (i.e., pub fare).

There is another place that has always looked interesting to me, but I have never been there. cath said she had passed an Irish Pub when she was wandering the area one time and I think this might be the place she saw. Anyway, it is called Kate O'Brien's. Here is a description I found online:

"Go downstairs in this double-decker Irish pub and pull up a stool to drink and mingle. There are plenty of good beers and liquors to choose from, and the friendly crowd is easy to approach. Upstairs, a tiny dance floor and great music offer the perfect way to get closer.

Kate's also offers a full menu for table service. The priciest thing on it is rib-eye steak at around $25, but it also features sandwiches, salads, and traditional Irish pubfare for under $10.

Open Hours: 10:30am-2am daily; Dancing Thu-Sat"

It is on Howard near Second (map), a little farther away than Thirsty Bear, but still well within walking distance.

that sounds great to me.

Now if I could slow down school work for a moment or two, I'd really be able to get excited Smile

ah, here's the one I saw, The Chieftain at the corner of 5th and Howard:
http://www.thechieftain.com/

It really did look like a hole-in-the-wall dive, heh, but i'm a sucker for Irish pub food (and Bass Ale, not Irish, i know). But I've never had Spanish tapas, so i'm game for the Thirsty Bear as well.

That is funny, cath, that is the first place that my bf and I thought of when you mentioned an Irish pub in the area, but I thought, naw, that is the old Chronicle hangout (before it was called the Chieftain, I think) and reputably a true dive (also, it is not in the best neighborhood). But, for all I know, it is not a dive anymore, since I have never been there.
Kate O'Brien's is also an Irish Pub, and they will undoubtedly have Bass on tap, because the Irish pubs always have the English ales. I am willing to try either, or go with Thirsty Bear.

p.s. imbri, i like your avatar a lot!

If anyone is going to be around a bit early (specifically, Tuesday March 8th), I'll be in town for the embedded systems conference, but will be going home early Wednesday evening.

Awards Show

Are imbri and vpisteve going to the awards show Wednesday? Is anyone else going to it? Will you be able to take non-flash photography?
