Re: Don't Chase The Rabbit Too Far Down The Hole ...

Congradulations. You did a WHOIS on an in-game site and discovered that it was registered by Microids, the same company making the game that the ARG is based on. It's debatable, but this might indicate that you were digging beyond the scope of this particular game. You might have gone a little too deep.

Actually, doing a whois on a game site is considered to often be one of the first things you do. If you're lucky, the PMs have gone all out and will register the site to make it appear as if this is a legitimate site - so you'll have an in-game contact name and number (ILB did this - and we got Dana's voicemail # out of it).

If you're not so lucky, the PMs do a proxy registry so you get no information what so ever. Or, even worse (imho), the PMs will register it in their names, breaking the reality of the game (S&S splits this difference. All the sites are registered under Marlowe Digital, but still have pointers back to the SA parent company).

I actually checked out the DNS info for the site when it was first found, but since it just pointed to Microids, I really didn't feel like writing up a post about it. Between not having a Labyrinth Foundation site to look at and having a DNS with clear OOG material depressed me. Nothing like having a beautiful site thats utterly alone in its in-game world.

I didn't say that it was a bad idea. Heck, even I did it. And I like that "Tyrhinis" tried it too, and I can understand why he did it since none of us commented on it.

I'm just saying that I guess the people setting up this particular ARG didn't care if anyone checked that information, and that is a bit of a shame - it would have been cool if they had extended their verisimilitude from the Lombartech website into the information they "registered" their domain under, as games have done in the past.

No big deal.

One of the creators, Mathieu Larivière, also mentioned Lombartech in an interview he gave to PC Game News (check out the last answer he gives). I just wish we had something more to go on.

Why would they launch the lombartech site weeks before the launch of the ARG, who would they do that do us!? Shocked *twitch*

...Anyway... Does anyone know what Lombartech means? I'll look in to it now.

I'm not sure where the idea that it is weeks before the launch of the ARG came from. The press releases I read, as well as the stuff on the Stilllife forums, made me think that the ARG is starting well before the release date of Stilllife on April 15. That leads me to believe that the game is starting very soon and that we need to keep checking the Lombartech and the Stilllife sites. The other sites I am guessing may arise don't seem to be up yet.

The press releases really give away much of the plot of the ARG so don't read them if you want to be surprised. There is also a newsletter for Stilllife you can register to receive and that may have news about the ARG.

This could be a happy coincidence, but my thought is that it's a play on the names of the creators

Lawrence Bullock
Oliver Agnew
Richard Masters

Lawrence Oliver Masters Bullock Agnew Richard = Lombar

Maybe it sounds better than Lorbamtech, or less obvious in the way they came up with the name. Or maybe I'm just totally wrong.

Very Good!

I could only think of that Peter Lombard dude... He was a theologist though, I don't think he did anything to do with murders or internet security.
