Revisiting the Story

Whew. I just listened to the radio drama all the way over again, from start to finish, and it hit me on a very different level than it did previously.

When we were playing the game, it was an amazing thing to be part of, but I was so caught up on wondering at the interactivity, the excitement of the story unfolding, the interaction with you guys, that I never fully appreciated just how brilliant a job our voice actors and PMs did on the radio drama. Listening to it nearly half a year later gave me a fresh perspective, a perspective of someone not immediately involved in the progress of the game.

And as I entered the final chapter, I realized this: I Love Bees is a great story, even independent of the ARG setting. Listening to it from start to finish without interruptions for the first time, I marvelled at just how REAL it sounds. Kamal, Jan, Jersey, Rani, and the Op: these aren't just characters in my mind. They've achieved what I think is the finest possible accolade for any ARG: I can't help but think of them as real. Even though I know the voice actors, even though I've spoken to the people whose fertile imaginations brought them to existence, there's a part of me that revels in their alternate reality.

It's a nearly impossible task even for the best storytellers to craft a reality so emotionally resonant, to create characters so identifiable, that they leave lasting impressions on those to whom the story is told. And when I consider that so much of it was written only weeks or days or moments before release, that the PMs were flying by the seat of their pants for nearly half a year and still managed to produce such an emotional rollercoaster of a plot... it just blows me away.

So yeah. Thanks, to Elan and Sean and Jane and the rest of the writing staff. Thanks to Kristen, Yuri, Zan, Kari, Olivia, and all the other voice actors. Thank you all so much. If we, the players, made the girl real, YOU made her beautiful.

Totally agreed, and I was thinking exactly the same thing!
I'm going through the audios again in an effort to get caught up in my fanfiction (slowly getting the next few chapters worked up), and going through the chapters again, I kept stopped what I was doing just to listen, caught up in the story over and over again Razz

So... hehe exactly everything you said

I too agree. The story in ILB is astonishingly good... and holds up to repeated examination.

I've said elsewhere that I'm going to rip the entire play to my mp3 player and listen to it on the way to the Chicago Hivemeet. How better to spend the trip? (I'll just have to blame any sniffles near the end on allergies, should others in the compartment ask... yeah, that's it.)

-- Steve'd like to extend his congratulations to the cast and crew. The work is awesome, in a literal sense.

So good in fact that many months later here I am logging back in in hopes of finding the next chapter. Smile Looking back on the whole corse of events and meeting the PMs still makes me tear when I think about it. It was an awsome ride... and one I would take part in again in a heartbeat.

It's nice to see the place is still in use. And the story lives on. Smile
