I dunno if someone's asked this, and if it's been answered, but as far as I can tell, the video's from shinjuku, right? Even if it isn't, it's in Japan. That's for sure. So, why is it in Japan? Is there any reason for it yet? Does it just... look cool? From what I can figure out, everything we've gotten so far has pointed to London or Britain or the likes being the central point of this game. I can understand if the newspapers are just going to be ads for it, or clues for us with a little rabbit-hole for the people who get interested in it. Even if the blanks turn out to be, say, TV ads or what not. They could do one on NBC, and the next day, or week, do one on BBC-whatever. Or, more probably, Sky... net, was it? I'd think that'd get a few more of the wanted people's attention, judging by the way this is shaping up.

Sorry for the many questions, I'm just trying to figure these things out in my head.

just my spec here and some coincidence most likely. imho, the video as we are ment to interpret it, is made to draw our attention that in fact these messages (sente's letter, the logs) are from another world, one parallel if not very much resembling our own (shared histories). Regardless as one would assume, despite these similarities, there are differences, which then are much likened to culture shock.
japan esp shinjuku = culture shock. diverse diff between old and new. i hinted at this in another post. of course this is only one explanation, perhaps shinjuku is the starting point of our quest. and something happened there in the 16th of january 2004 which we should draw our collective attentions too.

who knows for sure? we arn't seeing any specific leads as yet. so atm i am almost willing to take the video as just that, a cool little introductory clip, which sets up important dates for us to watch. if there is more, well we certainly havn't found it yet.

It sort of makes sense to me...in the pre-game stuff, one of the sources they listed as their inspiration was William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition", which takes place in London, Tokyo and Moscow.

If I had to hazard a guess, it just seems like it would be more interesting for all of us if we can see other cities in a universe parallel but alternate to our own.

Plus, theoretically the character Sente could have posted ads in Japanese and Russian newspapers (as well as others), but because this is an English-speaking board, we wouldn't have a great chance of knowing.

But other than that, they probably just want to give it a sense of scale. I do hope there's more of that kind of stuff; it adds a lot of flavor.

Very subtle but nonetheless true lhall - we have indeed done just that! Each country in the world could easily be viewed as a different alternate, springing from the aforementioned shared cultural experiences.

That's just too deep for this time in the morning though, now my head hurts....

Ugh - morning?! Every time I read about this after 22:00, like right now, it just creeps me out and makes me close every single blind there is in the house. Is that a bad sign..?

www.perlplexcity.com

Re: the type in the newspaper; the website does indeed exist now. Check it out: http://www.perlplexcity.com. The text 'ganotme' is located at the top of the page, 'aairmover' is found at the bottom, the binary on the right spells 'typo'. So far, my few attempts to access any files on the server result in loading of the main homepage again.

Since this website was apparently not available for others very recently and because of the 'typo' binary, am I to assume that the 'perlplexcity' was a typo on the newspaper's end of things? ie: the domain was registered after the typo was found to let us know that it is a typo and not a valid lead. Sound good?

update: I just found a scan of the newspaper in question, and the paper version does not mention this typo in the URL. It seems to only be on the online version of the classified ad, so I do believe this must truly be an accidental typo, and therefore completely irrelevant Sad

Jeez, I go away for a couple of days and there has been an explosion of threads and topics!! Have just finished reading all the new updates which took 2 hours! Yes I did start work at 6:30 Sad
With regards to the new Perlplex.com it could be that it was indeed a typo, but then why would they have the extra images and words on the page. Anyway, more clues to examine!

Hahaha! I get it! ganotme = ga[not]me = not inside game = OOG

Another note of interest. The green forest on that page is misc5.jpg. There are five other misc_.jpg pictures that I have found. (misc1-misc6.)

misc1 = beam of light approaching a grid with shopping cart icons sprinkled over it
misc2 = stack of dirty coffee cups
misc3 = sepia tone photo of a couple swinging a baby between them
misc4 = color inverted action shot of a race car zooming on a track
misc5 = the green forest picture from the main page
misc6 = a picture of some reefs or small islands in the ocean

Any of these pictures mean anything to anyone else?

at face value... they made up a quick website, from a generic template? and forgot to remove the rest of the images... although all signs point to it not being in-game.... we shall wait and see what steg picks up.

edit: it picks up the fact my jpseek and me suck at looking for stegs Razz check seejs' post below.

edit edit: okay, i got me stegdetec. with a sensitivity of 1.6 its detected misc1 - misc 5

The most interesting thing about the video is the blackouts where no text comes up.

These are at 13, 18, 30, 35, 41 and 48 seconds (roughly)

I did grab the times more accurately (down to the frame) but there's no point as Premiere could well have mucked about with the frames on importing.

The thing is, the video doesn't advance at all during the blackouts, it just stops and starts again at the same point. Maybe they're to give extra time for the audio because it was longer than the video clip? Seems a bit silly because they could have quite easily filmed for a few more seconds.

Stegdetect gives a positive result for jphide with a sensitivity of 1.5 (which is pretty low) for the trees. Also says that the JPEG data is corrupt and there's a 'bad Huffman code', whatever that means. No hex editor on this PC so someone else will have to check that. Enjoy Wink

EDIT: also gave topright.jpg a look but still came up negative with sensitivity all the way up to 300.

Thank God! Somthing I could recognise straight off!

But what are the significance of aairmover and the binary(?) digits on the right?
