[UPDATE] Perplex City - Oct. 8th

Cool, this seems to have started moving forward.

1. Remember that PerplexCity place? The two working URLs that I found for it previously were perplxcity.net and perplex-city.com. They both had an e-mail of the person whose name I think I'll keep out for now, even though it can be easily dug up in the humongous thread.
Anyway, perplexcity.com was some business site or something (I can't remember what it was exactly, but it was definitely out-of game). Now pretty much anything that is perplexcity or perplex-city has been re-registered through DomainsByProxy and is offline Wink.

2. Except one: perplexcity.com. I won't go into the contents of the letter here; suffice it to say that it is signed by Sente, and, therefore, is definitely in-game. Also, this: "The finder will be awarded Perplex City's highest honor and receive a substantial financial reward" kinda made me sad. Seriously? It's going to be that kind of game? Sad

3. Before I go into what I think is a puzzle, I'd like to say that I looked for the directories that existed on the other site in the past, and they are all 404.

4. The logo on the letter is a link to this page: http://www.perplexcity.com/indexB.html

5. Something else (I couldn't find the... what do you call that?.. hotspot?... on the image, so I just went with the link in the source) is a link to this: http://www.perplexcity.com//2718281828/

Googling for marchant or various sentences in the image brings up too many results, so I'll leave figuring out marchant for later.

I looked for /assets/sitewide/ and /assets/ - they both exist and are unprotected, thought nothing shows up (clearly, we know something should, though); it's the same deal with the /images directory. [edit] I should add that I also looked for stuff like marchant149 and pp8 etc. with no luck [/edit]

6. Um, I think that's all for now. I will also incorporate these updates into my primer/guide thing, though I'm not sure how soon Mr. Green

P.S. Needless to say, the game itself still seems haulted, but I'm hopeful that there finally things we can start digging into (that was alluded to before, right? Or am I making it up?)

----------edit-------------

Also, this cracked me up:
Quote:
As far as "hide and seek" games go, I imagine that this is an all-time record. But this is not a game.
Very Happy

Edit: Topic change - Wishi-san

Am in a quandary, I already applied back at projectsyzygy, dont want to do two seperate games, so want to make sure its the same one. Since I already got my reply email....am in, methinks, so submitting here for me would be redundant....

The hotspot is the black bar in the lower right hand picture.

I think that we are seeing the empty directory markers because the site is not set up to disable directory listing. Instead they put in a dummy index page, to force it to look empty.

2718281828 is an interesting number. A little googling reaveals it to be e*10^9, also googles estimate of capitol raised with their IPO.

One other interesting note, the /2718281828/ file uses CSS to prohibit printing of the quote.

Okay, so apparently the latin phrase that's above the symbol that one clicks on to get to the next page and that is seen in the close up on that next page, "quaerere initium sapientiae", roughly translated by someone that doesn't know any latin (read: me), means "to serach for the first clue/knowledge." Here's my little breakdown:
Quaerere: to search, to try to learn, etc. (I believe it's the infinitive)
Initum: the beggining, the first (don't know what form it's in, but it's the right one for that particular form of the next word)
Sapientiae: knowledge, information (I believe that this is in that subject-of-the-sentance-case (gimme a break, I failed Sanskrit))
I haven't really been able to find anything out about the other words on the seal as they're a little harder to make out on the close up. I didn't find anyone to attribute the quote on the first page, "Keep that which you value close; better to be vigilant than to rely upon the kindness of strangers," to anyone yet, but I really only did a quick google of it. It's labeled as being said by Unknown in Perplex City in 179 BC, so maybe that's all there is to it. *shrug* That's all I got so far, just hanging out staring at /2718281828 now.

I think I'll revise. I am not sure this is a puzzle... maybe it's just there to introduce us to the characters (somewhat)?

This Sente dude and his people have obviously somehow lost the Cube (and it will take him sometime to give us the information we need to find it, heh).

The Latin, as one of my dear friends tells me Wink is something like "search is the beginning of all knowlege". Actually, that, combined with "Taversen Square, The Old Town" somehow reminds me of Hardboiled Wonderland, though I'm entirely unsure of how Confused

Does anyone know what the logo is? It sorta looks like an unfolded 4D cube in 2D (so, that would be... what?.. it's not technically a hypercube, and, of course, the word preceeding "cube" is blacked out in the letter image). Bah

Now, there is that Marchant guy that either has the cube, or just wants the cube ("I must hold it. I must have it in my bare hands"), though I suppose it's possible that he's not talking about the Cube at all. [edit] Marchant reminds me of March Hare, too, though I will be the first person to admit that this is a giant stretch. I should go to bed now instead of coming up with things to stretch [/edit]

Also - heh, the Cartesian thing. Though, considering the years, it's probably not even Cartesian.

Actually, the years are the most interesting thing, I think. Sente quotes someone from 179 BC (I have been unable to find that quote). But Marchant says his thing in 148 AC. What kind of year is that? Is that different from Sente's years (should be Confused ); our years are probably different from Sente's (see the "concealed it somewhere in your world", indicating that Sente's world is different from ours). But then, again, it could be something like the hardboiled universe (re: the Murakami thing, which I am somehow unable to get out of my brain right now). Btw, I can't find a /archives or a /cityarchives, either - but I'm not very surprised about that.

Last thing - patience, again?! No, start already!! (sorry) Smile

Edit:Nevermind the Spoiler tags. Embarassed

Okay, so I'm skipping through the source for http://www.perplexcity.com//2718281828/ late tonight when I come across <img src="/assets/sitewide/spacer.gif">. I plug that into the URL and find an error page that doesn't look like an error page at all. http://www.perplexcity.com//assets/sitewide/spacer.gif ... I'm not going to lie to you. I have no idea what all that is. Only thing I could get out of that was yet another URL. http://www.perplexcity.com/tmp/httpd/errorlog/

Now this is interesting. I'm leaning towards the 'building characters' now after seeing the errorlog. I've skimmed through it and read everything but it's late and I haven't really thought about it yet. I just thought I'd offer it up to you guys and see what you think.

Also, if I'm trouting this info, forgive me, but since I came across these URL's by reading this thread I figured I'd post it here first.

I supose the 'S' person they keep refering to would be Sente.

The message between Henrik and Amy made me think that they are perhaps married? Or at least living together.

The one four women/girls that the messages are being sent too is called Lyssa. Maybe this could be short for Alyssa?

Wow, I can't beleve I missed that, I just assumed it was really a gif spacer. Shows what you get for assuming. Wink

The symbol itself just looks like an array of cubes to me. (QBert anyone? Wink ) There are two many cubes there to assemble a hypercube out of it. I'm guessing it's probably just a logo.

The filenames look like standard unix timestamps to me (error logs are usualy named that way) but using that theory, the email response to the shoes email was sent about 5 years before the initial email. In addition, everything but the first log is past the overflow point for unix timestamps (except on a 64-bit time int).

After further review of the CSS, printing of the page should net you the second, "error" image rather then the main quote. That explains why printing of the main quote was dissabled...

AnthraX101

EDIT: Just a note, "409" is the standard HTTP error code for "Conflict"

errorlog

Great find!!!

Now the contents of this log are what I'm talking about. THIS is the kink of characterization that an ARG needs. I love the exchange about the shoes.

a 4d hypercube consists of 8 3d cubes -- there are only 7 in the logo

by "consists" of i mean "bounded by"

the 404?

This was in spoiler text above, but honestly, if we're going to play the game, don't we have to reveal stuff? So if I'm violating some ARG rule I don't know about by unspoiling this link, then let me know.

http://www.perplexcity.com/assets/sitewide/spacer.gif

What does "error 409 CONFLICT" mean?
