[UPDATE] Advert in USA Today (17th Feb)

I've been poring over the International Edition of the paper for the past hour and a half. It comes in two sections, A &B, each with about 10 pages. News and Money in section A, Sport and Life in section B.

On page 7 of section B there is a 'marketplace today' classified ad section, nothing stands out and it looks to be the only section of the paper where a message could be inserted. I'll try and scan this section in and get a readable image for you all to see.

Does anyone have any other good ideas about where or how to look for clues in the paper? There doesn't appear to be any personals section aside from the classifieds, the rest of it reads as pretty solid news.

Most likely scenario is that I am missing something, but other possibilities are that I didn't get all of the sections of the paper (it seems very short) or the International Edition (i'm in the UK) isn't the edition we're looking for, and we want the US Edition.

Edit: Topic - Wishi-san

The other thread seems to suggest that the US Edition has a link to perplexcity.com in it, but nothing else of relevence.

Apologies! This is a bit superfluous now. I tried searching about but missed the end of the video thread.

Please delete if appropriate, mods Smile

No, I think this quite appropriate. No reason to discuss the USA Today advert in the video thread.

Can someone post a scan, or tell us if the real advert is exactly like the online version? Does the "not only an object of......" also begin with lowercase in the hard copy?

No clue what exactly "perl" is, but I know it's a programming language. Is there any way that this could be a clue or be pointing us somewhere.

I'm not trying to be over-analytical, I just truly don't know what "perl" does or doesn't do, and it seems mighty unfortunate from a PM perspective to go through all the trouble of placing the ad, advertising where they've placed the ad, only to wake up to a typo.

Think of the non-gamers who will be hooked in by the "REWARD OFFERED" and may be going to wrong site.

You mean besides the fact that PERL is a scripting programming language?

Link

It might be good to have a separate thread here to discuss the USA Today article... Here's a link to the other discussion. Smile

As I said, all I know is that it's some sort of programming language.

And I highly doubt it's anything more than a mere typo, I just wanted to ask someone who knew more about it if could be a pointer of some type.

So I may sound incredibly dopey for the asking, but there it is.....and it wouldn't be a first. Wink

Er, they shouldn't be going to the wrong site, since the URL is correct, it's just the title that's wrong.

If it's a real advert.. why "perlplexcity"? Perl is indeed a programming language (well, a scripting language) but it's extremely flexible and doesn't immediately suggest a particular use. Hell, I use perl a lot in ARG type things anyway for text parsing. Maybe I should take another look.

If it's not a real advert, why go to the trouble of placing it and then misspell it? Who would have known enough in advance to place the ad?

Of course, there's a third possibility, that the ad was transcribed by a human (our local paper only takes ads over the telephone) and they couldn't spell.

Either way, Sente clearly wants a lot of people seeing this, and coming to perplexcity.

Er, which is exactly why I said "may be going to the wrong site" and "I highly doubt it's anything more than a mere typo"

Quite simply I didn't (and still don't) have a clue what PERL does or is - and simply decided to ask the question.

Ok, here are large images of today's International Edition classified ads page. The 'perlplexcity' advert found on the web is *not* (so far as I can see) in this edition. Although, there may be something non-obvious that someone can spot. The first image is mainly included to see the date at the top right of the page. (posted as links, they're just over 400k each)

According to the online version it's located in "Announcements". Is there any such category in that paper?

Not in this edition unfortunately. Maybe someone at the paper shop screwed up, I only have two parts comprising 4 sections, 20 pages total.

Aha! Thanks firefox.

Either we're still in a phase of sparking more interest prior to some real clues, or it's a subtle recursive hint to go back and examine the site yet again.
