[SPEC] the Storyline (as I see it)

Hey all. I've been on the IRC channel a little bit, and I just spent the past 5 hours writing this up. In case you don't know, I am not an in-game character. This is just me, taking what we've seen so far, and trying to pull together some sort of story line. Ahem...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

CreativeEmbassy's Storyline Spec.

Assuming:
- BC = Before Cube
- AC = After Cube
- Sente and S. Marchant are two different people.

Story:
Beginning in the times BC, an unknown scientist created something he called the Cube, the first device to make warpspace jumps possible. However, he disappeared before he was able to tell the world exactly how it worked (some speculate that he used the Cube to attempt a jump himself).
Needless to say, the Cube marked a new era in time, as an academy in the town was set up in order to study the Cube and its "powers". Researchers spent countless hours finding the various things it could be made to do. Research of the Cube spawned many other inventions, and this made the town thrive. Perplex City grew up around the Academy, but the center is still known as The Old Town.
One of the more notable scientists of that time was a man by the name of Hesketh Zeller. Another researcher, Dr. Taversen, had the a part of the original town named after him (a place we now know as Taversen Square). Zeller, along with his team, formed the Academy under the Latin phrase Quaerere Initium Sapientiae, or, "Seek the Beginning of Wisdom".
The year is 148 AC. The Cube, too valuable to be displayed itself, is locked up deep within Academy doors, and a holographic representation of the Cube is on display for visitors and tourists. A thief by the name of S. Marchant visits the holograph, and is completely mesmerized by it. He breaks into the Academy in the middle of the night (by infamous Gatehouse 24, known by few to have a flaw in the AI that protects it), and tries to take the Cube, only to realize that it's an image projected in front of him. Careful to not leave any trace, he leaves and no one notices that he was there.
He breaks into the Academy several times, trying to find a way to get to the Cube. Being a master thief, he is more than able to bypass the safes and security devices that stand in his way. Unfortunately, he is not a scientist, and doesn't know how to bypass many of the testing equipment that stands in his way. Being more and more obsessed with the Cube, he becomes careless, even leaving machines on when departing.
Eventually, Marchant succeeds in taking the Cube. Right as he's about to leave, the Academy learns that someone has broken into the facility and sends waves of security guards to secure the outside. Trapped in, Marchant activates the Cube, which transports him and the Cube to Earth, on the other side of the Universe.
Sente and ? have assembled a team for ProjectSyzygy, a mission to find people from our dimension who will find the cube and bring it back to them.

Yeah, I made up a lot of stuff to fill in the blanks.

So what do you think? Is there any evidence on the site that would contradict what I'm saying? I know I'm missing the parts with the shoes...

Edit: Just labelling the topic - Wishi-san

That be a good one. It makes some sense all around and gives a great storyline context, though we will have ot wait till postgame chat to find out how accuirate you be...... Smile

Very nice - however which of that is known fact???

(Just curious, as I'm new to Syzygy and I'd like to know as much as possible Smile)

Hey, CE! I was there in the IRC when you spec'd all that out! Missed a few things we worked on, most notably the numbers in the logs and the pstcards, but it's understandable since a)I forgot most of it already, and b)it's even less certain than your spec'd summary above.

first kudos on the summary.

on an somewhat unrelated note, the same idea (that of a cube which is able to travel between worlds/realities/etc and how its creator was trapped in it) has been explored before, in a book i have recently read, and just spontaneously remembered then, called patron of the arts by william rotsler.

i wont spoil it for you, as it is a great sci fi read, but in this novel (eventually) the idea of a travelling cube is explored. it lies dormant as a piece of art, until
its secret is rather stumbled upon- etc yadda yadda. maybe we shall see references to this or other sci fi ideas. remember at the start of syzygy, they promised clues would be everywhere, in films in newspapers in books all around you. food for thought Smile

ps. the cube doesnt play that big of a role, but heck its still a good book Wink

It's a very well put together version, but what's no surprise is there's a lot of interpolation between what we know and guesswork.

It sounds quite an interesting way to put it. However, I still believe Sente is the same person. If this is true also, then how have we received messages from Sente unless there is a secondary Cube or something similar which allows them to speak to our universe.

Also, you don't need to spoiler SPEC as it's simply that, no proof at all Smile

i agree fully.

is assume you mean sente = s = s. marchant. i tend to agree to that too.

well, maybe information could pass between the worlds - but then again, how would the postcards get into our world?

Well put together - I especially like where Marchant steals the hologram instead of the actual cube, which I asume is based on his quote - V creative. Very Happy

hehe lovely spec, I also wrote one, based a little less on filling holes, more to do with assembling facts. Not as imaginative, or as outgoing...

Speculation into Project Syzygy

After a detailed analysis of the clues, I have encountered a few possibilities, backed up by some non-conclusive evidence.

I apologise for the lack of credited names for the speculations I shared with people, as I wrote this entirely offline. However you know who you are, and I agree with you J

Firstly I will explain my theory upon the location of Perplex City, and the Academy. The Academy is situated in a place known as Old Town. Previous speculation has leaded us to believe this to be a district of Perplex City, or a nearby Town. I have no reason to challenge this speculation.

It is also highly likely that Perplex City is not on Earth, but is home to an Alien race. We were given a picture at one point, of a wormhole diagram linking Earth to Alpha Centauri.

If this picture is not a hoax put up by someone to trick us, then it becomes almost solid evidence to back a theory that Perplex City, and the planet it is on, is in the vicinity of Alpha Centauri. If this were correct the diagram would also show their means of transporting themselves from There to Here, the wormhole. However it would be nice to have a piece of secondary evidence to back up that theory, as on it's own, that diagram is not solid enough (especially if it is a hoax image).

That is my theory on the location of Perplex City. Next is the purpose of the Academy. I agree with several others on this matter. I share the speculation it is similar to Oxford, A research centre, with some historic background that attracts visitors, however the Academy also seems to have some high security areas too (giving the cleared entry to researchers). And access to this complex, involves going through gates. Gate 12 appears to be the general public visitors access for the Academy, while Gate 24 requires security passes to get through, and logs data of whoever passes through.

I join this with the speculation that the researchers at the academy were, and still are, researching us, planet Earth (however there was speculation that the academy merely funded the project). This is backed by the comments made in the error logs, especially the ones about shoes, where someone speculated that the girls were in fact looking at shoes from our planet and planning to get samples, to re create them on their own planet.

This raised one question from me. How difficult is it to transport things through the wormhole or, whatever they use? It seems their project must cost a fair amount, and this backs up the reason they would ask us, Earths Citizens, to help. It would be too much money for them to send a large quantity of people through the wormhole, and so they need us to do the hard work down here.

There is little known about the cube, other than Sente wants it back and an S Marchant also wants something. Speculation here is all guesswork, but the possibilities I agree on so far are:
· Sente and S Marchant are one and the same, and the message after the index B page is his need for the cube.
· Sente and Marchant are two different people. Sente wants the cube, and has requested our help, but S Marchant also wants it, and the note shows a great urgency for his control of it. Marchant may have been the one to steal it.
· Sente and S Marchant are two different people, but are also after completely different things. (This is the most unlikely of the three in my opinion, but it is too early to throw out any possibility, especially without concrete evidence)

My last note is the connection with London. A lot of clues point to London, but I have no speculation as to why… any help appreciated.

Everything is left a little bleak, and all we can really do is wait.

If anyone believes I have missed a large important point, wants to agree with or challenge this, then feel free, I bet I missed something out.

My theory, discussed a bit in the same chat session as the OP's spec, is that Perplex is an other-dimensional, or future, equivalent of London itself. Now that Alpha (or Proxima?) Centauri has been mentioned, I think it also possible that it is on another planet. Perhaps London as we know it today is their Old Town (if the 'future' theory does indeed pan out), or rater the rest of Perplex sprung up around London, perhaps due to the Academy's founding and the influx of Academy students/employees/researchers discovering that London and her surrounding areas were not enough to give them all homes, thus founding Perplex City.

Nice one, CE. It's far from definative, but it seems to make a lot of sense based on what we know and widely-accepted spec. I'd laugh, though, if it actually turned out that this was exactly what the PMs had in mind the whole time...

That was a very interesting spec to read, CreativeEmbassy. I wouldn't be surprised if the story turned out that way. Even though chances are that it won't, I think there's a good chance that a good bit of what you said will turn out to be true.

A little more...

Wow. Thanx for all the great replies. I basically tried to come up with something that isn't TOO farfetched. Some of the stuff is really confusing, like the quote from Marchant, and I tried to idealize what Marchant went through and what he wants.

I firmly believe that Sente and S. Marchant are two different people, even though they apparently both want the cube. Sente wants the cube for the good of his society, and S. Marchant clearly wants the cube for his own. IF Sente and Marchant are the same person, then he has to be schizophrenic or something.

Yeah, I intentionally left out certain parts, esp the shoes.

There are several different things this could mean:
- "They" is referring to us on Earth, which is being studied by the people at the Academy.
- "They" are some other people in thier world that just tend to spend a lot of money, and the anthro-research team is a joke.
- Okay, so we don't really have a clue. Confused
