Optical out? I haven't been able to find an optical out on my xbox anywhere... what's up with that?

The Optical output is a part of the HD AV pack.

You need the high-def pack. Like this:
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/209496.asp

You get true 5.1 DD with this. The beauty of the nvidia DD encoder is that, not only it's hardware based, it has minimum lag and it encodes everything! On a computer with this chipset, you get EVERYTHING in 5.1, from Windows sounds to Games! It's called Soundstorm and if you google around, you'll see it's a high-praised on-board chip. M$ hit a home run when they put this chip on the xbox!

I'm a electronics/tech geek ... I spend more time reading about this stuff than I do playing halo2, if you can believe that! Embarassed

But at least you know that Halo 2 will look it's beautiful best when you play it!
Here's hoping that Halo 2.5/3 will blow us away on the Xbox 360.

You get true 5.1 DD with this.
The XBox High Definition AV Pack (just a cable, really) combines optical audio (for surround sound) and HDTV outputs.

Xbox HDTV AV Pack

If you don't have HDTV, but you still want the 5.1 surround sound, get the XBox Advanced AV Pack. That's what I have:

Xbox Advanced AV Pack

You'll still need a separate optical audio cable to plug the optical output into your home theater.

From engadget.com:
More info (still nothing verified so it's still rumor) on the Xbox 360's Harddrive and Wireless Controllers.

engadget.com wrote:
Our same reliable source who delivered the goods for us a few weeks back with the inside dirt that the name for the next Xbox is indeed the Xbox 360 has just hit us up with a couple of other nibblets: One, that the Xbox 360 is definitely going to come with wireless controllers; and two, that it's going to have an optional hard drive that attaches to the top of Xbox 360 "in a really slick way, almost like the hood scoop on a muscle car." Better still, "You'll be able to add the hard drive afterwards without having to take the box apart if you didn't buy the hard drive version of the Xbox 360." Yeah, that means there are going to be (at least) two versions of the Xbox 360 available when it goes on sale, one with a hard drive, and one without.

I'm also seeing reports at numerous places that the Xbox 360 will be capable of acting as a wireless hub on Wi-Fi networks. This seems to be an odd rumor to me as it would require the Xbox 360 to be "On" at all times or have a seperate on/off switch for the hub funcitionality.

Assuming that the BIOS is as easily by-passable (is that a word?) as the current Xbox, I would think so. The current xbox almost seems like it was "designed" to be modded.

True. The BIOS will determine how easily it'll be moddable. But without a HD, you just couldn't have all the cool things we have now, like different dashboards, Media Center, MAME emulators, home brew games/programs ... Don't know if the HD, being optional, on the next gen will be easily accesible like it is on the xbox. I still would trade all this for a beautiful 1080i Halo3 with DD 5.1 (or even 6.1!) ... I might regret saying this in the future! We'll see ...

Stop the Presses!! Gameindustry.biz gives their two cents about the above mentioned engadgets rumors. Again.. All rumors but how would you feel about an xPod?

From gamesindustry.biz:

Rob Fahey of gamesindustry.biz wrote:

Xbox 2 set to feature removable hard drive - reports
But are these sealed units, or is the fabled xPod making a return to the rumour mill?

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console is set to feature a removable hard drive bay, according to online reports today, which will allow users to upgrade their entry-level systems to include mass storage capabilities.

Citing a "reliable source", technology news site Engadget revealed details of the removable hard drive, claiming that the unit attaches to the top of the console "in a really slick way, almost like the hood scoop on a muscle car."

The report tallies with claims from developers working on the system, who have told GamesIndustry.biz in the past that Microsoft has disclosed that there will be a mass storage device, but that they should not rely on its presence for their games.

It's been assumed for some time that this means that Xbox 2 will be sold in at least two basic configurations - with and without a mass storage unit - and today's report seems to indicate that it will be possible to upgrade between those models by adding the hard drive.

One vital question, however, is whether this hard drive will simply be a sealed memory unit (which may actually be a hard drive, or may be a very high capacity flash drive) or if it will sport a screen and buttons, allowing it to be used as a portable media player.

Comments made to GamesIndustry.biz by sources who claim to have seen the new console suggest that the latter may be the case - resurrecting the "xPod" rumours which originally surfaced last year, after XNA boss J Allard allegedly told fellow snowboarders in a bar at a Canadian resort that the next Xbox would come with an iPod style media player.

Engadget also reports, from the same source, that the new console is set to be called "Xbox 360" when it hits the market; at present, the only official moniker attached to the project is "Xenon", its development codename.

Microsoft has reported tested a number of names on consumer focus groups, and is believed to be determined not to launch as "Xbox 2" - just as rival Sony is apparently keen to drop the numbering system from its next PlayStation console.

"Xbox 360", "Xbox Next" and "NeXtBox" have all been suggested as names that the company is considering in the past few months - and if those sound too convoluted to be real, it's worth bearing in mind that according to UK tech news site The Inquirer, the current frontrunner for the name of the next Windows operating system is Windows e-XPedition...

If I get a 40 gig xpod with my next xbox that would be cool, it'd also make modding a fuckload easier if they do it wrong Twisted Evil . But I hope they don't fully lock it down making you only iterface through the xbox

I am such a sucker for sexily aesthetic powerful electronics.

And cars.

Come to think of it, I'm a sucker for sexily aesthetic powerful anythings.

You know, until you posted this I never realized how similar my laptop and my car look. . .

That's not true. I still have my DC hooked up for a reason. (wow, been a while since I got to defend the DC.

I love the DC. I still have mine hooked up as well, even though I don't spend much time with it. As for the 360, I have a feeling that we can forget about backwards compatibility if the hard drive is not standard. We already know how well "perhiphrials" are supported by the developers. But I can see the HD going buh-bye if nothing else due to all of the modding. Microsoft had no intention of subsidizing everyone's purchase of a "cheap" Linux machine (or whatever you're modding your xbox into)

Ha! I'm a DC owner myself and I didn't know you could get that kind of thing ... Learning every day! But still, a hard drive makes things easier and more convenient! The Media Center on the xbox is just a work of art! (pitiful reference to the long jacked thread on another forum ...)[/quote]
