Hmmmm. I wonder how this ties with the rumors that xbox360 controllers will be all wireless. And I'm hoping this means true forcefeedback and PC-compatibility for racing wheels on the 360! This would be awesome!

From the pictures I've seen so far the Xbox 360's controllers will be wireless, so your wish is most probably going to be true.

There is a very good write up about The Anatomy of a System Launch (What does the next Xbox need to make an impact?) posted at IGN. I recommend reading it there because it is far to long to post here, but I will provide some of the highlights below.

The Anatomy of a System Launch wrote:

The Xbox had 20 games available when it was released. Tony Hawk, Project Gotham, Oddworld, and Dead or Alive 3 were all highly anticipated, quality titles, but only one name needs to be remembered when discussing Xbox software. Halo didn't just sell through the roof, it single-handedly moved hardware. This was pure proof that a console launch's most valuable asset might be a killer application. This is also what makes Halo 2.5 rumors so interesting. If the Xbox 360 was to be released with an optional hard drive, bundled with an already successful game, this would greatly improve the chances that consumers would purchase the total package.

From Microsoft.com:
Quote:

New York, NY -- Samsung Electronics, a global HDTV leader, and Microsoft Corp., a leading force in the software and video game industries, today announced an alliance to elevate gaming to the next level through high-definition technology. Microsoft has chosen Samsung as the exclusive HDTV worldwide marketing partner for the next-generation Xbox® high-definition (HD) gaming platform. The announcement was made today during the Home Entertainment Expo at the New York Hilton.
The next-generation Xbox and Samsung HDTV combination is designed to deliver the most advanced and realistic high-definition experience to gamers worldwide. To promote the HD Era, the companies plan to place over 25,000 Samsung high-definition televisions in Microsoft® Xbox retail kiosk locations across the globe.

The new 23" Samsung LCD TV (LNR238W) to be paired at retail with the new Xbox console offers a super-fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed, which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts. In addition, the Fixed Pixel Device eliminates scan lines, further ensuring gameplay is smooth and flicker-free. Picture quality combines with advanced audio technology to create the perfect gaming experience. Samsung's HDTV built-in speakers emulate the most realistic surround sound using SRS Tru-surround XT so the action feels even closer. Game enthusiasts will no doubt appreciate the sharper details, deeper contrast and rich sound that are standard on a Samsung HDTV.

Big deal. I had my Xbox controller plugged into my PC last year, using a cheap USB cable adapter off of the Internet. I have a PS2 dance pad plugged into my PC for StepMania. It would be strange to discover that an XBox (really, just a specialized PC anyway) controller could not be plugged into a Windows PC.

Well, I never used one of those, but I've heard some compatibility problems with it. Driver support could be the main problem, since it's not supported by MS. So, official MS support is a big thing, IMO. I'm sure most casual gamers don't even know such adapter is available on ebay.

Look at these pics for this game that's supposed to be on next-gen consoles!! It's been posted on xbox-scene and some other forums around the web.

Now, I know it's not been confirmed for the next xbox (or PS3 for that matter). But, if 360 games look like these, there's nothing I can do, but be ready to buy it when it launches!

Supposedly it's like $300 (I think) for XBox360 w/o HDD, and $400 or so for the HDD version. They might lower or raise one or the other though, $100 doesn't seem like enough of a difference to me to justify 2 versions, but it might be.

Two points:
1. The XNA architecture is specificlty designed for common user interface devices between PC and 360. The reason is because developers build the games on PC's and ensures that the control scheme they designed will be flawlessly conveyed to the end user. Not to mention it makes for VERY intresting possibilities in cross-platform. Anyone remember Quake 3 for the Dreamcast (RIP Sad )?

2. The origianl Xbox launched at a $300 price point along with retail bundles of crap to drive the price to $500. In fact almost every console launched close to that price. I still remember paying $200 for my Sega Genesis and $80 for Sword of Vermillion. That's the reason that if a console comes in at a low price it's news. Think Gamecube and Dreamcast (sniff).

See what you guys did. I thought I was okay, now I'm about to cry...

Hey. The DC isn't dead so long as it is still hooked up to my tv. (and if anyone knows where I can find a copy of Powerstone 2 you let me know.)

And big deal about the controllers. By the time Longhorn is released we'll be controlling machines telepathically.

More news from Mr. Gates Smile

ctv.ca wrote:
Bill Gates drops hints on next-gen Xbox
Associated Press

SEATTLE — Microsoft Corp.'s next-generation Xbox gaming console will be more of a digital entertainment hub than its predecessor, making it even more of a PC hybrid than ever, Bill Gates told a meeting of business journalists on Monday.

The console, code-named Xenon, is due to be previewed in an MTV half-hour special later this month.

Gates, Microsoft's chairman and co-founder, was vague on specific features of Xenon but said the company's consoles would be evolving to include improved communications tools for making multiplayer online gaming more convivial.

He told the annual meeting of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers that Xenon's software menu would be similar to that of the company's Media Center edition of Windows, which is designed for computers meant to be located in the living room.

"If you're used to that menu, when you use this Xenon you'll see a menu a lot like that that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things."

Video game players want to be able to chat with their buddies, know when others are present online, and will want to access their music and photos on their consoles in an interface already familiar to them, Gates said.

At a convention of hardware engineers last week, Gates said the company's investments in Windows Media Center software have paid off, with more than a million copies sold since the launch of the operating system's second version in October and a total of 2 million since the initial system shipped three years ago.

Gates also called the Web log phenomenon fantastic and joked that it's become more difficult than ever to provide a single company message to the public given the number of Microsoft employees who are now blogging publicly.

"I keep thinking about when am I going to start doing a blog," he said in answer to a question. "My rate (of posting) has proven to be irregular so far. When I turn out at least two a month they'll put me online," he joked.

The Microsoft chairman also drew guffaws when he took a dig at Apple Computer Inc. in response to questions about the rave reviews the competitor's newest operating system, Mac OS X "Tiger," received upon release last week.

The overwhelming consensus was that Tiger was far and away the best consumer operating system available now, with Microsoft not expected to match it in features in Windows until the end of 2006 at the earliest in its "Longhorn" system.

Gates said he was pleased that the media were getting excited about computer operating systems. And then he took his jab at Apple, whose share of the consumer market is nearly 4 per cent.

"You can always tell if you're working on a Mac or a PC. Just take your applications and stick them in there and see if they run," he said, moments after calling Apple "the super-small market share guy."

You know, if I charged 200 dollars for a word processor upgrade, I wouldn't count on applications to compel retention. P)

IGN has created an Xbox360 section of their web site. It has everything that they know so far about the Xbox 360.
It also contains the below image which shows the dimensions of the Xbox 360.
