I disagree. I think Live is getting much better with these new games. It has the potential to give you so much more than just Multiplayer games. Basic online system let you host a game and others join you and it pretty much ends there! Live has the potential to be SOOO much more!

For starters, you have Download Content, scoreboards, clans and even trading, like you can buy/sell your own customized cars on Forza. And don't tell me you were not excited the first time you saw your stats on bungie.net!! I know I was! I also expect Live games to have less lag and much better security against cheaters.

I'm expecting 360 to take Live even further! I think Halo2 implementation was very well done and it exposed Live to a lot of people. More and more people will get with 360. That would be my guess.

Oh, and on the topic of jerks, all I have to say is that they are everywhere! There's no way to get rid of them. From all the games I played online, I can't think of one that didn't have jerks. The thing is that the good experiences you have must be worth the pain!

I hear Outrun 2 and Worms 3d are both good for Live as there aren't any rankings. Steel Battalion as well, mostly because the only people who can afford it are generally not the kind to talk shit, and with the bugfixes a lot of the cheating is gone.

PS2's main issue is that they allow 56k to get in on the action, which creates lag issues. Course nowadays a lot of games don't support 56k connections, and it's still has more MMORPGs to pick from if you're into it.

Well, so long as cents are getting tossed around, here's my take. Long (but hopefully informative) post ahead.

First and foremost, XBox must be viewed as a long-term strategy that will start paying off in this generation. Ask yourself, "If I wanted to break into the multi-billion dollar video game development biz, how would I compete against incumbents with years of networking and experience?"

The answer is to fill in a niche or do things better than the others. MS has done exactly that. By entering in late in the last gen, they have prettier graphics than PS2 (with the cost of PS2 game franchises being established and having sales advantage--something still happening in the numbers right now). MS has undercut Sony at every possible point:
- if no companies will develop for an unproven console, MS buys Bungie.
- if SCA is gonna drop the price, Xbox dropped it first.
- if SCA is developing revolutionary multicore processors with IBM, MS does too
- if MS and SCA are gonna get sued for their force feedback technology, MS buys the suing company instead of settling
- if Sony comes out with the PS3, MS comes out with the Box360 a year-and-a-half sooner
- if Sony is undercutting MS with an earlier announcement at E3, MS does an announcement on MTV a couple days before Sony!

The dynamic MS had to face was that nobody wanted to develop for an unknown system (especially when Sega just decided the losses were too great to continue and N'do/SCA are eating the market). As said before, they bought Bungie to get a killer app, and the rest has been fairly sparce. The other thing they did was develop an online business strategy when N'do and SCA didn't see it as a priority. A stupid missed opportunity on SCA and (especially) Nintendo's behalf. The very best thing MS could do in the last generation was prove to developers that gamers would buy 'Box products. They have done that very well, and the list of xenon game developers proves that. In the meantime, Xbox was a loss-leader (aside from Halo and Live! sales).

Next generation sales will probably be losses too (at first), though it shouldn't be underestimated that MS can mass-produce units to cut part costs (it won't cost them the amount it would cost us to build those boxes), but will even out in the long run. Aside from this, PS3 doesn't come out for a year and a half, so xenon will have no reason to cut the price until the competition does (what, three years from now?).

Nintendo's CEO has said that the development of beefier systems is a bad thing and will hurt innovation, and he is right because it makes developer costs skyrocket. Developers are coming up with ways to cut costs while keeping great output, but the point still stands. Because of this, many see a focal shift on the horizon...innovation will have to catch up to the giant leap in capability. Perhaps MS is hoping future generations won't be as technologically advanced, so they can afford to lose a bit on systems right now?

Now then, what is Sony doing to compete? They have been in development for a longer amount of time, and are creating cell processing. If they are successful, this radically change the way modern computing works. Intel has the most to lose if cell processing takes off, but MS is definitely in bed with Intel and stand to lose if the processing paradigm shifts. Now, you can bet your bippy that Sony is working out a robust online answer to Live!, but the biggest gamble is that they will bring the world to its knees with cell power. And it just could happen, too. Howstuffworks.com had an article on the patents Sony has filed, and they basically said that each PS3 will have vector processing power to rival the top ten supercomputers out there today! Add to that the massive distribution the technology will see via PS3 sales, and you end up with a serious potential change in the world of computing.

Perhaps that's why xenon has three cores...could MS be working to develop an interface that works with distributed processing (in case Sony slays Intel)? Another big advantage MS will have over Sony is the native ability to interface with MS networking. If MS wants to push the Media Center angle, they are better positioned to do it than Sony (who is too wrapped up with proprietary formats and interface issues). Think about it...whether you have an iPod, Rio, Nomad, Palm, or whatever, most people have XP on the PC (including those who have Linux boxes or custome built media PC's). If suddenly your xbox can stream music, pictures and video, there will be hooge market for that (who may view the gaming aspect of xenon as just a bonus feature!).

And the Blueray/HD-DVD debate? Closed standards are only good for the companies that make them. With MS going open, there is reason to question why people would want to invest in the newer technology, despite its benefits. After all, what good is a high-tech gadget that you can't buy anything for? It is looking like the format debate is coming to a close soon, though.

Really, the only thing Sony has going for it is the new technology they have made and existing game franchises that MS hasn't courted away from them. They certainly aren't showing good signs with thier customer service skills or business strategy. If cell technology doesn't take off, they could end up on the endangered species list. Nintendo doesn't seem to have any cells up their sleeve, just a whole bunch of Mario, Koopa, Zelda, Samus and StarFox. What they do have is a bucket full of love for gaming. Instead of racing to make expensive boxes and pretty but unfun games, N'do is focusing on making the best of the best games. I sure hope it works out for them.

I do as well. My roommate/best friend has been playing FFXI since it came out for the PS2, and he pretty much has no life now. It gets aggrevating at times because he plays constantly, and it is just enough bandwidth usage that it causes lag on Halo 2 when I play. There is nothing worse than knowing that you could own most people (beekeepers excluded) in the game but because of the lag you end up getting owned yourself. Sad To fight this lag issue I worked it out so that he does not play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So far I'm enjoying playing H2 during these times. It's amazing what a difference it makes. Sorry had to vent... FFXI is the devil and I should know because I was addicted for a time. I love all FF games except that one.

Also, comparing H2 to SOCOM2 isn't fair. H2 isn't even a toddler yet. Games have ways of filtering out thier problem players, and SOCOM has a huge headstart. Besides that, PS2 online is non-standard, so no universal benefits like friends lists and network interface. Individual companies support the interface (with the ability to screw it up royally). MMO's will come to the box in the next generation (now that the technology is more proven). If H2 and SOCOM2 came out at the same time, the inter-player experience would be roughly similar.

Great post, Jerms!

Now if only N'do would wiseup and realize that they could make a ton of money if they developed their killer titles for the Xbox 360.... Sony would definetly be in second place in the next gen era.

I don't know about this, emphasys on robust. I don't have links, but I thought Live costs were huge for MS. And it took a lot of time to mature and get to where it is. I believe Sony will come up with something better than what they have on PS2, but I think MS has far more experience with it! Plus, Sony online system won't be around in any shape or form till mid next year!

Yeah, that's what I was saying! If the war is over, there's no real incentive for Sony to swallow the costs of blu-ray on PS3! Sony is looking at the big picture and will certainly use PS3 as the main driver to push blu-ray ahead of HD-DVD! No war = PS3 price high, IMO.

What Sony has is a very good Marketing department! They hyped the Emotion engine so much that people would not buy a dreamcast and would wait for PS2!! Now, I'm not saying Cell is the new Emotion engine, but I honestly don't believe Cell will be the revolution Sony markets. As you said, Intel and MS are on the other side! It's not an easy fight! In the end, I think Cell will be a success on PS3 and will have some life beyound PS3, but I don't see Cell on the PC market.

Oh, and what Sony has is huge third party support! The sheer amount of games released for PS2 is amazing!! It doesn't make much difference to me, cause I barely have time to play the games I want to on the xbox, but it is an impressive number! MS knows this and it seems to be addressing this for next-gen. The big problem is that the big franchises are still with Sony. MS can start new franchises, like they did with Halo, but it's risky and it depends on how good the games turn out.

I read in Ralph Baer's book about how video games were pretty much a necessity, as much of the innovation in the computing world came about through console makers pushing for better processing muscle. That's what you're seeing with the Cell processing...Intel is scared shitless that this works out. Even if it only does 1/3 of what it's supposed to, it's still far, far faster than anything they have out there. I heard somewhere about 300 gHz or something.

As for Nintendo, their new system is supposed to be a departure from the other two-aside from having an online plan. The leadership of Nintendo has changed radically since 2001, and the new one is pushing wi-fi networking and online capabilities out of the box. Which is why the DS, too, has wi-fi and internet play capabilities as well. They have the potential to turn around their diminishing console share here, but even if they don't, they seem to have eked out a nice little profitable niche-they haven't had a bad year since they started in the games business.

Griftee-what server does your buddy play on? I think my friends are on Unicorn.

I think he plays on Phoenix. He's a lvl 69 Red Mage named TigerFury.

ROBO, do you have a link where that pricing is posted?

I can't get to it from work, but I'm pretty sure it was on kotaku.com or xbox365.com

Here's the link and the article about the price points:

xblgamers.com wrote:

Earlier today, we received a nice little tidbit in an e-mail regarding the 360. As is already known, there will be two packages ready in the fall.

One consists of the bare, basic console, controller, cables, etc. It will retail for the standard $299.99 USD.

The other contains the 360, controller(s?), remote, and the HDD (with extra content). We couldn't get a comment on the chance of this package having the camera bundled. This will retail for the bargin, and fairly uninspired, price of $360 USD.

See what they did there? Xbox 360, $360. Cute.

Waiting to hear about the possible DVI connection.

For $360 they better include a DVI connection. Smile

Nononono... HDMI, pleasepleasepleaseplease (/pleading) I've got a big honkin' HDMI plug in back of my set just begging to be used and I've run out of component jacks.

From xbox365:

Xbox365.com wrote:

Close but no cigar, say coders working on next-gen Xbox as new "leak" hits the net

Developers working on the Xbox 360 hardware have expressed doubts at the validity of a "leaked" bullet-point list of specifications purporting to be those of the Xbox 360 next-gen console and the accompanying Xbox Live service.

The console specifications, which were posted to the Internet this week, are largely consistent with previous leaks about the Xbox 360 hardware - but a number of unusual flaws in the document, pointed out by development sources, suggest that this is not an official Microsoft document.

"It's most probably a list made by someone who knows more about the official spec than the average hack, but I doubt it's an official Microsoft spec sheet," we were told by one developer who has experience of the new format.

"It's probably broadly in line with the spec that will be announced, but may be off on some of the finer details," he added.

One example is the mention of a 20GB detachable hard disk, when a 40GB unit is clearly visible in last Friday's leaked photographs.

The hardware spec sheet offers details on the central and graphics processing unit architectures, memory details and bandwidth potential, and claims that Xbox 360 will support a host of CD and DVD derivatives, output in widescreen and the much vaunted high-definition resolutions as standard, boast a trio of USB 2.0 ports, support for four wireless controllers, and the aforementioned detachable 20GB drive.

It will also be "Wi-Fi ready", the spec sheet claims, although whether that is intended to imply that the system actually has Wi-Fi hardware (as is widely expected) or that it's simply ready to plug an additional Wi-Fi module into is not clarified.

The Xbox Live spec included on the sheet is arguably more interesting, mentioning a pair of subscription options (one free, and one paid-for) and some key concepts like the ability to access Live to download premium content without actually being a paid up subscriber who can play games online.

We must stress that Microsoft has made absolutely no comment on this information, and is unlikely to do so if past form is anything to go by. We don't have long to wait, however, with the MTV special which will officially unveil the console planned for Thursday evening in the USA.

For the sake of completeness, that probably-not-official spec sheet in full...

The nitty-gritty tech specs on Sony's Cell. Here's why the cell is (potentially) big.
- This thing is hella powerful. The article I referenced said that cell performance on an optimized task would be equal to five dual-core AMD Opteron servers together. That's one cell (PS3 will have four of these).
- With them going into PS3, Sony will have a mass-production effect happening that will drive costs down. Also, cell chips will go into other consumer electronic products, which is a big deal because of...
- Distributed computing. This is the big deal. Cells are made to communicate and automatically share the workload with any cells that are found nearby. As I understand it, this can be done wirelessly. This means that if you have a Sony Wega HDTV with Cell tech, the processor combines forces with the PS3. Imagine the implications of that if PC's used it. Instead of your computer becoming obsolete, buy a new Sony monitor and it starts running faster.
- Cells are based on the PowerPC design Apple uses in G5's, so the chip isn't starting with a blank slate. Unix (including Linux) and Java both have builds that can run in PowerPC environments, so they could be adapted to Cells and take full advantage of the chips. This is the biggest element in overthrowing the Wintel regime.
- The emotion engine was too specialized to be useful in a non-PS environment. Cell chips are generalized. They will be ready for non-PS applications right out of the gate.

Leadership has changed, but the paradigm hasn't changed much. This is a good thing for us, though. Their old paradigm was to not get caught up in the rat race to higher technology, and focus instead on the family of franchises. Looking at the GDC keynote speech from nintendo, I remember someone saying it was, "Like a love letter to our pasttime." And the result is some gorgeous games for the 'cube. Percentage-wise, there is much less detrius for the gamecube than for the others. Waters is right, there are an absolute ton of games for PS2. But how many would you really want to play?

Really, I could do without most of the cream of PS2's crop...Max Payne, SOCOM, Metal Gear Solid...each made me want to gouge my eyes out (seriously, the Max Payne nightmare levels have to be the worst moment in any game I've ever played in 20 years). Madden, FFX, rez, ico, GTA and now God of War...these were well received, but very niche. Really, FFX and rez were the only ones I could sink my teeth into, and rez takes all of 20 minutes to play through entirely. Aside from that, I don't really want to play a game where I beat hookers to death or have sex with concubines.
