Amongst all the other X05 news, IGN managed to get a hands on look at the XBox360 dashboard interface.

The biggest thing that jumped out at me is the streaming iPod music. That's just damned cool. And it's nice to see MS integrating non-windows based elements into the system.

Also, the interface seems well designed, and the idea of downloadable wallpapers is kinda cool. Sure, it's not groundbreaking or system-making, but it's often those kinda tweaks that make a system enjoyable, as opposed to just useable.

Plus downloadable demos & trailers is a nice touch. It'll be interesting to see how that evolves, but it'll be nice to DL demos so I can try a game before either wasting my money on it, or passing up the next great game.

very interesting - I particularly like that you can pause a game, go fiddle in the menu system, and then return. That's one thing I've wanted to be able to do relatively often on the current Xbox.

As for the iPod and whatnot, that is indeed a nice touch. I'd bet against it being able to play your purchased iTunes songs, but if it can integrate with the playlists and stuff for music I've obtained elsewhere, that's very cool indeed.

The price is still a bit steep for me to be onboard at launch, but down the road a ways is looking more likely. Especially if, as I've heard, Windows Vista has Media Center functionality built in.

My thoughts exactly. They can even give him different camo costumes as Team Ninja seems so fond of doing. However I do NOT want to see him in a thong.

I'd be surprised if this is the case. I hope/expect that it will play ALL your music, iTunes or not, format irregardless (AAC, MP3, WAV, etc.) There's no reason for Microsoft to limit it like that, besides actively pissing off people, and besides, I'm not sure that it would be able to tell what type of music is being streamed anyway.

The only thing I could see that might be a problem is AAC encoded music, which is Apple's proprietary format (is it proprietary?) But you can download from iTunes in mp3 format, which I expect most people do, so I don't think it'll be a problem. Besides, I'm not even sure the streamed music is streamed in its compressed format, or if it's just the equivilent of what comes out of the headphone jack. If that's the case, then it won't matter at all what the format is, AAC or other.

well, as of now only iTunes or an iPod (and Quicktime I think) can play your iTunes-purchased files, due to Apple's proprietary DRM system.

I just can't see Apple licensing the player to Microsoft.

But if, as you say, it just plays what comes out of the headphone jack, then all would of course work. In that case I guess you'd just have to use the iPod's buttons to control your music isntead of the 360's dashboard.

On more thinking about it, the fact that they call it "streaming" makes me think this is how it will work, rather than actually copying your music to the hard drive (though that may also be possible with non-encrypted songs).

It is possible they could come out with a cable that allows you to access the same controls as the remote (play, pause, stop etc) from the x360 controller. However that being said I would doubt this will happen.

It is not the headphone jack, the xbox just recognizes it as a mass storage device or as a HD (depending on how it is formated). there actually would be a way around the DRM using the iPod's own authentication since the dock connector also had line level audio out (e.g. the ipod speaker systems use this), but you would have only rudimentary control over the ipod (play, pause, track skip, FF, RW).

So Gamespot has an article up about XBox Live Arcade. One of the games announced for XBL Arcade is Gauntlet.

Now, even if this is the original 8-bit version for the NES, or one of the new ones like Dark Legacy (which would just be DAMNED COOL), if it's not multiplayer over XBox Live, I'm going to be PISSED. Gauntlet was one of the first real multiplayer games, and the worst thing they could do to it would be to make it only playable on a single console.

But if it is multiplayer over XBL... how cool will that be. Anyone else interested in trying it out?

I honestly think its Tartarus because that's what he does is hit people with a large hammer therefore he'd be perfect for a fighting game.

True, but DOA has never really used weapons much.

If it were Soul Calibur, maybe...

i think the female spartan is gonna be it

Yeah, I'll have to retract my previous statement and agree that I believe it will be a female Spartan, just for kicks lets say number 458. Rolling Eyes

A rampant Cortana would have been fun. Her secret move? Trashing your credit rating. Smile
