[META] "Enter email here" at perplexcity.com Okay finally have something to post. This is my first so please be gentle.
Have spent an hour typing various things in the email submission field and found it dosn't matter what you put in, your are taken to the same message. Even if it isn't an email address or if you leave the field blank.
Now it occured to me that you should get some kind of message letting you know that you have made a mistake, or something asking you to confirm your address.
So is it possible that some piece of information we may already have, if put in this field will leads us on?
If I'm off the mark then I just put an hours worth of gibberish in there!

Being new to this I did do a search before I posted anything and didn't turn up any references.
That's why I thought it was worth mentioning.
Feel kind of deflated to hear it had been tried

Thats why it struck me as odd that there was no validation.
It either leads nowhere and no one gets a reply or there is some kind of filter to pull out only email addresses from the submitted gumph.
I cannot believe that someone would set up a game like this and then leave that open like it is.
May just keep typing in gibberish to annoy them!
Or would that get me into trouble.

You can if you want but then when they just filter the email addresses and send a mass email they won't really care
It's not that unbelievable there's no validation, it's not like it's a shop or anything.

yeah, i originally brought that up and asked if there was any way to get a look at the cgi script that handles the "e-maill address" submission, but i got 'tut tut' -ed at for saying so...kos it is kind of like peeking behind the curtain stuff.

the thing is, the e-mail form being on the main page is weird...
for someone who has never played an ARG before and they just come across the firebox thing or the postcard or ads, and it tells them to go to the site, they see no immediate buttons to press to go to the next page, so they would just read the letter and then submit the mail. It then takes them to the thanks you for your interest...we will contact you when the time is right..page, and thats it...most people will then just sit back and wait for the e-mail to arrive...
heck i did, if it were not for me to search google for info and coming acrosss this site and others, i wouldn't have found out that there was a button on the page and the next one...
so, what i'm trying to say is, it is a big distraction to place the e-mail field on the page if you want the user to ponder about letter clicking or looking at the source code to advance to the next page..and get "Perplexed"

Of course this could be another great example of over thinking something.
A talent that I have by the shed load.
I wonder what the most bizarre submission has been?

and I'd like the PMs, once the ARG is over (will it ever be?) to publish the weirdest submissions they got
Also, yes, this deal with the email submission was brought up before in some thread.
I did suggest then that they may have a quick script to check, for each submission they got, whether it's a valid e-mail address or not (wanna see me write one in 10 minutes ?), but it was also suggested that they may do that validation by hand.
It's always good to see some things being re-hashed though. You never know who will notice or suggest the next new thing
Cheers,
F.O.R.

10 minutes?!
cat all_emails.txt | grep -E "[[:alnum:]]+@[[:alnum:]]+(\.[[:alnum:]]+)+" > valid_emails.txt
If it weren't 6:45 after a night of not sleeping, I'd even check if it worked XD
