I've just done day 5,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
and I've just had to chase Jamie round a hotel on their CCTV cameras for 15 minutes... but if you lose him, you have to restart from the beginning! Talk about annoying. I got so close then screwed it up and had to restart the task again.

Anywho, it's not exactly hard considering the message bots tell you EVERYTHING you need to do, so for the target audience this is aimed at, it's gonna be slightly difficult but not mind-blowing, but for us veterans it's piss easy!

I'm gonna stay with this one I think. It's good enough, cuz I like the challenge. Plus I'm a loser Razz

Just caught this on slashdot. Aparently the Wikipedia people are not thrilled that it was used for this game.

jangobongo writes "An article over at BoingBoing discusses what appears to be a viral marketing ploy appearing in a Wikipedia entry. Quote: "Someone has apparently abused collaborative reference site Wikipedia in a viral marketing campaign for a BBC online alternate reality game." "

You know, I do see something enormously positive about this. The Boing-Boing article just mentioned "a BBC online alternate reality game" as if everyone should know what an ARG is. The link was to the game itself, not to a definition of "ARG," yes?

Basically, they act like the term is or should be mainstream knowledge.

OK, you don't need to tell me how stupid this question is, but for those of you on day 5 (or thereabouts), can anyone tell me if I've got to change country codes, etc., to make that call from North America? I can't get through... *indignant squeak of frustration*

Thanks

Well, perhaps not with the same intensity, considering your devotion, hard work, and the length of your service to the genre, but I think I have some inkling or I wouldn't have brought it up. Wink

or the fact that he dreamed it up in a fit of termtrailblazing at like 2 am Smile

The first mention of Alternate Reality Gaming in my logs happens to be on the birth of unfiction.com (man, I remember watching that chat and really feeling like I was watching something start... little did I know)

Random history from the #jawbreakers log wrote:

[01:29] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> ok i have a mission
[01:29] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> i will make this site
[01:29] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> (after trail and janitorial updates are finished)
[01:29] <vpisteve> they talked about what was going on and mentioned cloudmakers.org, and I was there
[01:29] <DonkeyOatey> I suspect "taxicafe" will have something like that (if they don't already)
[01:29] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> they may but i doubt they would to the extent i'm thinking
[01:29] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> i mean they are providing a service, not an educational experience
[01:30] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> (as i understand it)
[01:30] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> but i bet they would link to my site Wink
[01:30] <DonkeyOatey> I'm sure they would
[01:31] <DonkeyOatey> Alot's been said about the emergin genre, but it would be great if there was someplace that brought it all together in a nice little package.
[01:31] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> exactly
[01:32] <DonkeyOatey> Might alos be a repository for existing and impending game information, not to mention an broad strokes archive/history of previous games
[01:32] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> i just want it so i can point people to something and say, forget it i'm not explaining it all to you look here
[01:32] <vpisteve> heh
[01:33] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> god at least it's a little easier this time to explain than it was during the beast
[01:33] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> but still it's too much to cram into a simple sentence or two
[01:33] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> and people have such short attention spans that if you don't interest them quickly, they're lost
[01:33] <DonkeyOatey> An introduction similar to Elan's introduction to his recent speech would be good (putting the reader in the first person)
[01:34] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> excellent idea
[01:35] * SpaceJanitor[Trailing] ponders what domain to register
[01:35] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> alternativerealitygamingomgunf.org
[01:35] <DonkeyOatey> notagame.com
[01:35] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> oo much better
[01:36] <Scryer> Maybe something with a "matrix" in it, since they're capturing all our net-based senses.
[01:36] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> no i don't want to get sued
[01:37] <Scryer> Maybe it's too early to define the genre if it doesn't have an identifier yet. Smile
[01:37] <DonkeyOatey> right. I've seen alot of catchwords thrown araound. None really stick.
[01:37] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> no i already defined it in the trail as alternate reality gaming
[01:37] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> so there
[01:38] <DonkeyOatey> non gaming
[01:38] <DonkeyOatey> or something that rolls off the tongue more
[01:38] <Scryer> notagame.com and notagame.net seem open still. At least they don't resolve.
[01:38] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> hmm would .net be better?
[01:38] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> nah .com is more universal
[01:39] <DonkeyOatey> "Have you heard about the new notgame jawbreakers?
[01:39] <Scryer> I like net better -- they're not necessarily commercial.
[01:39] <DonkeyOatey> or whatever.
[01:39] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> .com doesn't mean commercial anymore
[01:39] <DonkeyOatey> notagame.edu
[01:40] <Scryer> <shrug> I was at rand.arpa when the net was 4 sites. I'm not up on this newfangled stuff. Smile
[01:40] <DonkeyOatey> wow
[01:40] <Scryer> Look up JG01 on the NIC sometime. Smile
[01:42] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> damn .com .net .org all taken
[01:42] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> notagame.info?
[01:42] <Scryer> notagame.nu?
[01:43] <vpisteve> they just used a .us address at that secondstate game
[01:43] <DonkeyOatey> how about: thisisnotagame
[01:43] <DonkeyOatey> or nongame
[01:43] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> jeez not-a-game.com taken too
[01:43] <DonkeyOatey> wow
[01:44] <DonkeyOatey> not-game
[01:44] <DonkeyOatey> something has to stick
[01:44] <Scryer> total-immersion-game?
[01:44] <Aveena> realigame
[01:44] <DonkeyOatey> unfiction
[01:44] <Aveena> un-game (like the un cola)
[01:44] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> heh
[01:45] <Scryer> ungame is copyrighted. It's an ugly board game.
[01:45] <Scryer> trademarked, i mean.
[01:45] <Aveena> sounds like a best seller!
[01:46] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> i like unfiction because it contains unf
[01:46] <DonkeyOatey> game.com?
[01:46] <Scryer> Nah - it's a chick game. Feelings and emotions and non-geekish crap like that.
[01:46] <DonkeyOatey> unf?
[01:46] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> uNF uNF uNF
[01:46] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> think about it
[01:46] <vpisteve> there's no thegame.com
[01:47] <Scryer> Winnah!
[01:47] <DonkeyOatey> not getting uNF.
[01:47] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> notagame.com record expired on aug6 2001 but it's not available what's up with that
[01:47] <DonkeyOatey> yeah, that would be perfect.
[01:47] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> really?
[01:47] <SpaceJanitor[Trailing]> thegame?

[01:52] <SpaceBass> hey unfiction.com propagated overnight
[01:52] <SpaceBass> so now you have to help me write content Wink
[01:52] <vpisteve> huzzah!
[01:52] <vpisteve> oh
[01:53] <SpaceBass> anyway i have a bare model up
[01:53] <SpaceBass> not much to it except the front page and some very short history bits
[01:53] <vpisteve> just looking at that
[01:53] <vpisteve> looks great
[01:54] <SpaceBass> Smile
[01:54] * vpisteve feels like he's a part of history
[01:54] <vpisteve> oooh, puppetmaster guide
[01:54] <vpisteve> who's gonna write that??
[01:54] <SpaceBass> hey should i put your music site in the friends section?
[01:54] <SpaceBass> dunno yet Wink
[01:54] <vpisteve> sure, a link would be nice
[01:54] <SpaceBass> maybe one of the lockjaw pms
[01:55] <vpisteve> i like the term Alternate Reality Gaming
[01:55] <SpaceBass> "vern stevenson's music co.?"
[01:55] <vpisteve> heh
[01:56] <SpaceBass> so do i Wink
[01:56] <vpisteve> I think it could stick
[01:56] <vpisteve> I also think Beasting probably won't Wink
[01:57] <vpisteve> the whole concept really makes sense when you think about it
[01:58] <vpisteve> as we've entered a true Information Age, an entertainment form taking advantage of all those entertainment conduits seems very natural
[01:58] <vpisteve> er, information conduits
[02:17] <SpaceBass> i wish beasting would stick more that alternate reality gaming
[02:17] <SpaceBass> it's too hard to type (and say)
[02:18] <vpisteve> heh
[02:18] <vpisteve> can you tell me about these bee sting games I've heard so much about?
[02:19] <imbri> heh

Hehe that's great. It's true! It's just one of those things that gets into your fingers and then you can't stop typing it... *tries* Alternate Reality Gaming. Yeah.

Although I must say, now that I've heard other people shorten A.R.G. to "argh", it's been a godsend. Two less syllables! Smile Thanks for sharing the chatlogs. *sniffle*[/quote]

He was the greatest. I'm such a little fangirl. He had it all and really fell for Lockjaw - found things in the puzzles and story that others would miss, amazing player. And man, the things that man has done... holy cow! I mean Kryptos is super cool, but, dude, the guy did the original port of Adventure! How cool is that?! heh.

You dont actually have to call anyone at all. I cant remember Day 5 much, but I presume someone on the messenger says "Can you phone for me?" or something along those lines. Just say "no", and they will do it themselves, so you wont have to pay anything.

What I really liked about Jamie Kane when I first played it was that they created all those professional sounding songs for the website. Seriously, nobody has mentioned them, so I get the feeling nobody went to the character's official site. It's got 4 albums worth of songs that I wouldn't be surprised to hear on the radio.
