Here's the scan for the sydney ad. I hope this helps. sydney advert

so it seems to go:

...the Academy said in a statement today "as is well known, the cube is a unique object, with certain unusual properties. We have confidence that, using our knowledge of its composition we will be able to trace it without any difficulty wherever it may be. The Cube is not only an object of great significance to the city but also a technological wonder...

I think you are right - at least, it does make sense - but notice the comma after "the academy" in the first line. Changes the sound of it a bit, and implies that maybe they talk a bit about the agency before the bit we now have.

The most likely construction that requires that comma is something along the lines of "{name}, {job title} at the Academy, said..."

Yes... that makes most sense actually. It's just a matter of who said that particular quotation then.

okay, my specs, and in the shortest form possible:

 • the ads are part of a bigger article that was posted in a perplex city newspaper
 • the cube's material is the equivalent of the watermark in pattern recognition
 • we are the only ones looking for the cube, we are the resources that Sente talks about

I agree with your first point, but it seems counter-intuitive that you would make a press release in PPC newspapers and expect no one else from their side to look for it...what do you think?

Perhaps people from their side know they can't get over here, and they know that's where it is.

We don't know what the cube does, exactly, so we can't say why we're the ones looking for it.

I've got one. I'll scan it in tomorrow.

In a related note, anyone know of some way I can get my hands on a physical copy of the Daily Telegraph?

Not unless you know someone in Sydney who can send one to you. Not even we non-Sydney Australians were able to get one.

Question: Why would the PM's give us a video stating the dates of the newspapers if all the advertisements were going to be just pointers back to the perplexcity site?

YES! excellent question! see, that's the kind of fForward dynamic thinking we need.

Of course, it's not *just* fFor us. a successful arg will involve as many people as possible. so they place some ads in highly visible newspapers. rope in a slew of new people, hopefully.

Taking things "main stream" is what I would speculate. An attempt to bring new ARGers into the fold as well as an attempt to garner media exposure. Not to mention the fact that there was talk about "investment" into the game. This might be some form of reciprocation for such an investment.

Thoughts?

okay, it cant be a full justify, for two reasons. first of all, if it was a full justify, why is the final line not justified? also, the word knowledge would fit into the line above just barely. finally, the change in size, and the fact that what little i can see of the next add over is a different font, leads me to believe it was not a paper inputted add, but is in fact an image they sent, rather than a type in.

Hi,

I think this is just the standard type-setting.

Its normal in word processing (what the paper will prob. be using for the layout) for the final line (paragraph end) not to be justified. If you want the software to do this you actually have to go in and change lots of settings.

Looking at the top left of the scanned image you can see the edge of another advert that has also been justified.

What Mima said.

This is a convention which also has a name which escapes me. (Hanging indents?) This is typically done so you know when you are at the end of a paragraph.

Well spotted tho, leakingpen. Eyes high!
