I tried snake(green), butterfly (light blue, like air and possibly like souls?), fire (red), and for the last 3, well, it's quite hard to say. I tried raven (dark blue), trident (purple) and dog (yellow). No luck.

everytime you submit an answer it says

"you're recommendations are not correct. return to the beginning"

this sentence really grates with me, and kind of makes me think of that quote that Jon says - "everything seems to begin where it ends".

Are you suggesting that maybe we should do it backwards?

How do you mean, do it backwards? Where have you gotten that from?

I mean, invert the order of the numbers. Or maybe invert the order of the symbols - of course, to do this we should have an order for the symbols...

Hmm, i dont really see any logic in doing that. I think "return to the beginning" means to refer to when this ARG started, by visiting one of the original sites, namely hewalksamongus.com
I just think it's trying to get us to remember the signs.

I get the feeling the grid and how it's solved has something to do with Faust and Johann Von Goethe.

Well, after reading the entire Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus" ( http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext97/drfsta10.txt ), i find little to no help at all... still going through von goethe's epic now. The one curious mention in this script was how all animals and people, once perished, become elements... which could show the progression of living creatures into souls into flames... but it still would leave the trident out. I dont know, just kind of grasping at whatever right now. This is becoming frustrating, and, if you actually went through and read this stuff, truly boring.

i might be on the right track here... im now reading von Goethe's Faust, and i stumbled across a passage that mentions butterflies, the trident, and fire... but thats all so far...
this is what the passage reads:

"Like the finished butterfly,From the chilly chrysalis,Slipping, with quick unfolding wings,Boldly into the sunlit air, 9660
And courageously fluttering.
So did he, the liveliest,
And he quickly demonstrated
By the most skilful arts,
That he'd always be the patron 9665Daemon of thieves and jesters
And all seekers of profit.
From the Sea God he quickly stole
His trident, and from Ares himself,Slyly, his sword from its scabbard: 9670Bow and arrows from Phoebus too,
And tongs from Hephaestus:
He even stole Father Zeus'
Lightning bolts, not scared of fire:
Then he tripped poor Eros up, 9675
in the toils of a wrestling match:
As Venus kissed him, too, stole away,
The ribbons from her breasts."

I don't have time to read Faust tonight, but IF there is a clue for us hidden in there, it's probably something related to alchemical elements and their symbols. If I remember correctly (which is doubtful, since about a decade has passed from the time I read the book for the first and only time) there is something about alchemical creation of more or less precious substances.
I'm not so sure Faust holds the key to the grid puzzle anyway, to be honest.
I can't help thinking that the crucial clue(s) we're missing must be in one (or more) of the in-game sites.

Well, I read through the tradedy of Faust and some of the symbols were mentioned. The dog, trident, flames and serpent were definitely mentioned..the butterfly wasn't mentioned directly, but indirectly it was. Same with the Raven. Problem is..even though they were all mentioned..that doesn't help in any way in solving the grid. I thought maybe it would have something to do with the way they were introduced into the story, but that seems completely random...oh well, was worth a shot anyhow.... Shocked

This is a perfect example of how much a simple search can turn up (in this case using the keyword "webcam" in the S&S forums).

First of all is this post from earlier in this thread that tells us exactly where the picture was found. (Another lesson to learn - always read the thread you're posting in).

And there is this post that highlights how the picture was originally found. The posts below that one also start to explain what exactly it is.

Another explanation of the picture can be found here.

Those posts should give you enough information so that you can find the picture on your own. As far as I know, no one has run into troubles getting it from the site, so there isn't a need to post it here (that and it'll be much more instructive if you find it yourself. Hey, and then you can upload it for everyone!)
