nice! I wonder what kind of 'exhibit' it will be... like an art exhibit? or informational, speakers, that kind of thing... if they show internet based things, would they just be clips from them, or are they actually going to have internet connections up connected to the sites live? and how do we find out what exactly is all in the show? (yeah, I'd like to know if my sites are going to get a lot of hits during that time period, or if they're not included at all)

That's odd... isn't March 11 Friday?

Speaking of which, I'm coincidentally back home for Spring Break this week, and am planning to go check out the exhibit on Friday afternoon. If anyone else will be the area that day, we should meet up! Smile

Edit: thebruce, I'll let you know if I see anything linking to your site (or anyone else's).

Hi Tarrsk!
I alert you to this thread. I hope to see you on Friday night at Thirsty Bear!

Thanks for the link, 'pita, but as I wrote there, I'll be busy Friday night. Sad

Is there anything planned for the SF beekeepers this summer? Going to school in the east coast (sans vehicular transport) has made it impossible for me to take part in any meetups so far, and it's depressing to realize that I can't make it even though I'm actually in the Bay Area this week. Sad

That's too bad (change your plans! Wink)

The Bay Area Beekeepers have met up a few times since the end of the game and I expect there will be more gatherings in the future. At this point, there are vague rumblings about very early June between me and angelo (who MIGHT come up here from LA, where he is visiting in late May/early June).

P.S. You called here "back home." What city?

That would be fun! I'll definitely be around then- and I'll actually have free time to boot. Wink

The lovely locale of Danville, the town with the most boring name in the known universe (this has been proven with science). Smile

report, crewman!

I went to the exhibit today, and while it's not as extravagant as the one I'd built up in my mind (but then, how likely would a 50 foot tall Apocalypso waterslide complete with smoke machines REALLY have been? Wink), it's still very cool... albeit unfinished. That's right- when I arrived at Kroeber Hall this afternoon, it was to an exhibit Under Construction... which was almost cooler than seeing the finished thing.

They've plastered the room with pieces of paper explaining the characters and the concept, and placed a big title covering one wall listing some of the catchphrases of 2004. I think they were "Deaniacs," "Coalition of the Willing," and "ilovebees.com," from top to bottom, with the actual New York Times cartoon posted below them. On one side of the room, a PC was set up with a nice sound system, playing the entire audio drama on repeat... I must admit, my eyes got misty hearing the Stupid Cop blackmail Jan into supporting his claim that "the man had a weapon." Err, I mean, DAMN that stupid cop! Arrr! Wink

There's an Xbox hidden in one part of the exhibit, too. I played some Halo 2, blasted some Covenant, and decided that I really really don't like the small controllers. Smile Not sure if this part will make it into the final exhibit, as it had a very, erm, shall we say, "unofficial" feel to it. I suspect it's mostly there to give the staff something fun to play between shifts. Wink

I also got to speak with Greg Niemeyer, the guy who put the exhibit together with Jane- a soft-spoken man who nonetheless exuded enthusiasm for the game with every word. He said that the completed exhibit will be completely pitch black, all lights off. Visitors will receive small flashlights as they enter, and will have to hunt out the individual exhibits in the dark. Very cool, that the exhibition about the game reflects the nature of the game itself! Smile

Well, that's about it. Oh, I also ran into a fellow Unfiction Beekeeper there, but unfortunately forgot his name. It was a pleasure to meet you, my apologies for my bad memory! Smile

Monday's Lecture

I had the pleasure of going to Jane's lecture last night. Also in attendance were hmrpita, RangerD and Zudini.

Let me go over the technical issues first. The lecture was just over an hour, with Q&A following that went approximately 30 minutes. I had hoped to record the entire event with my digital camera, but at the best, my memory card could only have recorded about 60 minutes. I say, "at the best," because there was a more limiting factor: the batteries. My first set of batteries died after 25 miutes, and my second set after 35. So I DO have a pair of very large (between 400-600 MB) files....but there is probably a better plan.

It turns out that the whole thing was video-taped with a real video cam. I asked Greg if I could get a copy, and he mentioned that the entire thing would be available in streaming media soon after the streaming David Byrne presentation is over. More info on that to come...(but probably from the source, rather than me Smile )

I loved the presentation. I am heavily biased, due to the fact that I loved the game, and think that Jane is an extraordinarily nice person. But still, Jane knows her stuff. She has obvious confidence in what she is talking about and the knowledge to back that up.

The lecture, "Why I Love Bees: A Ludic Worldview" was well attended and her powerpoint presentation included pictures and audio of the players of ILB. Due to Jane's audience, she did try to highlight the SF and Berkeley players a bit. Similarly, when she spoke about some similarly "Perversive" games, she mentioned ones that had happened right down on Market Street in SF (where most of the ILB Axons were located). I found many of her ideas on this subject to be really fascinating. One point she spoke of in particular was of using an open-source/hacker (not the derogatory way it is used by the media) mentality on the concepts of how a space is supposed to be used. The concept of payphones as an invisible, mostly unused, technology has been recoded/rewired for many of us. She mentioned how using that public facility in a public way in some cases resulted in those facilities being removed by people who didn't understand. At least, that is something I took away from it. There was much more, but I honestly can't do it all justice....When the stream is available, I really suggest you get it.

My main disappointment was that due to the one hour time limit, Jane had to skip a good portion of slides that she had prepared. If she has another opportunity to present the full version of this lecture I would certainly jump at a chance to see it.

So, as the lecture wound down, Jane ended her powerpoint file on an odd slide.....she mentioned it might be a clue to something. When I get a chance, I will post my picture of it. It is a picture of Alice looking at a satellite photo of Antarctica. It has the words:

What's next for supergaming?

across the top, and Jane's email address and www.avantgame.com at the bottom.

After this, it was time for Q&A, and this is really where Jane proved her mettle. I was pretty surprised at some of the questions...they seemed to find the whole concept to be insidious and possibly dangerous. And one guy was just a complete tool.

I have to single this guy out. First off, he comes in late. REALLY late. and rather than quietly taking a seat in the back, he and his friend saunter up to the second row and plop down. He is called to ask the first question. He starts by pointing out that one graphic that is identified as being from Everquest is not actually from that game. Normally that wouldn't be SO bad, but he phrased it very rudely. Like DUH! EVERYone should recognize EVERQUEST. Then his actual QUESTION is, why did Jane sometimes use the word "Perversive?" Was that also a mistake? Yes, the little scholar asked a question that was answered in a part of the lecture that he had not seen fit to be present for.

And Jane managed to not throttle the guy. Now THAT is classy.

There were also some negative concerns raised by some members of the audience regarding the massively multiplayer aspect of her work. They are concerned that large groups can turn ugly. Jane generally turned these questions away by speaking about how in her experience the groups were generally self-regulating and positive forces. She mentioned how one person had hacked into Dana's blog, and far from being applauded, was actually roundly criticized for his actions.

On a personal aside here, I think to a large extent that the people asking the questions were forgetting that these "mobs" had a benevolent goal. To PLAY. Not even to compete, as in many games....but to PLAY. I got a chance to speak to Dan Carver a bit on Saturday regarding the Beast. One thing that they had originally expected/predicted in that game was for numerous communities to sprout up that would be in competition with each other to be the first to solve puzzles.... But that hadn't really happened. I think this type of game, which encourages collaboration without encouraging competition (by say, having a $$ prize or something at certain stages of the game) or some nefarious end (which historically mobs have been encouraged toward), is a positive trend. Some people want to be part of a group. If that group is playing duck-duck-goose in a park, then they certainly aren't looting or chasing people from their homes for being different.

After the presentation, Greg Niemeyer took Jane, Kiyash, a couple of colleagues, and hmrpita, RangerD, and myself out for tapas, wine, and dessert. They are going to be working on a performance play piece called Organum in late April, and invited us to attend/participate.

Again, I want to publicly thank Jane and Greg for their hospitality, and Greg for really getting ILB (I think that his quote in the article HAD to be taken out of context). He really sees great potential and promise in ARGs in general and Jane in particular.

Pics to follow soon....

Jane's presentation was awesome. I think Ariock got a lot of the main points, and you will definitely have to watch the video of it. Really interesting stuff.

Jane ended her presentation with...... a clue.

a clue..... a clue!

<cackles with delight>

I would've put this up earlier, but troubleshooting my home network at 1am is not what I call fun. The slide is attached. Essentially, it's a satellite photo of Antarctica, with a pic of Alice from Alice in Wonderland. We know this because she used the same Alice pic (although, without the background photoshopped out here) earlier in her presentation when talking about rabbit holes. I think Ariock has a photo with the top included so I hope he posts it when he downloads it off his camera.
The top of the photo got cut off when I took it, but along the top of the photo ran:

If that clue is for a geo-cache, I'm out. Smile I've had enough winter as it is.

I find it interesting that the two longitude marks are "10" and "110" instead of the more traditional 0 and 90.

Jinxie and I (OK, just Jinxie, really) were just engoogling the intarweb, and got this:
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s503.htm

and were sort of noodling around with the rest of it when Jane IM'd me.

She also indicated that this did not really lead anywhere, like, say, a website. Just so you all know. Smile

The first picture is the room of the ILB exhibit. The lights are off when you go through it (the flashlights are on a table to my left, out of view). The sound is turned up fairly loud so that you are immersed in the sounds of the radio drama as you go through it (you can see the screen and speakers on the right). On the left is the janitor's closet that houses a tv and console where you can play Halo 2.

I think ariock summed up the lecture experience well. I took a lot of pictures. Here are a select few.

The first two slides of the presentation were the Ludic Worldview slide and the Curiouser and Curiouser slide. I include the HitsHerMark slide because it's cool to all of us, I think. Then the sad slide of the ILB tombstone. Finally, the last slide of the presentation, Alice in Antarctica.
