[SPEC] Anyone heard of Unleash? First off - sorry if this isn't the place, and apologies if I got the label etiquette wrong - it takes some reading and searching before you can post here!
I'm not an alternative reality game player (pbem mostly). But there didn't seem to be a usenet group for it.
I was forwarded a link on the site http://un.lea.sh from a mate who'd seen a request to do some graphic design on some freelance website. He liked the domain hack.
It was just the background initially, but just checked again and it had been updated with a login box and some naff storyline in the links, and a link at the bottom to a game development company that I hadn't heard of. The company information sounds completely fishy to me, and it mentioned "alternative reality games". So I googled that, found the wikipedia entry and found this site, and read about ARGs, and ended up here.
Is this one? Or is it just something else? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick with the alternative reality thing?

Look here: http://www.nearworlds.com/unleash
"The game is massively multiplayer, persistant and has some of the features of alternate reality games. It is multi-format and multi-media.
Unusually you cannot buy the game, nor sign up to play it. You may only play by being directly involved in the plot by an existing player. There is consequently a degree of secrecy about the game, how it is played, and its setting."
I dunno what it means

Wheeew! Looks ARGish to me!
Near Worlds Interactive only brings up one google link...
I tried logging in, and it gave me this:
Quote:
Who Are You?
I don't recognise you.
Most likely I don't recognise you because you are not been awakened. You still live in a shadow world between true reality and an empty existence.
My advice would be to enjoy that ignorance. Spend your days in naivety. And don't wander back this way.
And if you want to wake yourself, you can't. Its impossible. If you could, you would be at once aware and unleashed.
If you are determined to wake, to free yourself forever from unreality, you'll have to find someone already aware. They will understand how to wake you.
They may even agree to.
Your loss.
The Nearworlds website says something similar...i'm sending an email to Nearworlds asking how to contact a current player or character...

Seems very Matrix-esque in a demon/vampires/magic/dark worlds kinda way. Either the password to login is something rather simple, or we're going to need to find someone already playing to get into it (I'm kinda leaning towards the latter). However, this line makes me think that there might be a way to contact some of the characters in the game.

Sadly, google searches are giving me nothing at the moment using keywords from the text.

Response to my inquiry:
Quote:
The chances are you might already know an "Aware" who wishes to bind you. If not then there is no hope. It is beyond even my ability to give you the tools to wake yourself.
There might be some who have woken and wish to prostitue their state to wake all who are interested. Beware that to be woken is to give control over your destiny to another. Do so for a stranger at your own risk.
I hope your search for someone to help bears fruit.
Ian.

This looks kinda cool, but I'm already annoyed by all of the spelling errors.

For some reason, editing my message placed it below this one...

Even professional writers who have editors to check over their work make spelling mistakes. I have yet to read a book that does not contain at least one. I'm not defending it, I'm simply stating a fact.

Sounds to me like he is pretty "Aware"... I'll try him.

I tried all the character namesSPLAT nearworlds.com and got bounces. But these are unusual bounce codes:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 9): 550
Rather than the usual "no such user" bounces. From what meager searching I have done this evening, these are deliberate administrative bounces that may or may not relate to the fact that I sent from a gmail account.
Dunno, and it's late
regards

Same thing happens if you try namesSPLAT un.lea.sh. Bounce code is normal enough.

Hi, Jon, and welcome!
Yes, this is currently the largest ARG community on the web, so you came to the right place, and yes, Unleashed does look like an ARG.
It'll be interesting to see whether the exclusivity factor works for or against them as far as attracting an audience...

Hmm, looks different... Since we can't seem to get a hit on Behold Revelation I'll lurk around here for a bit!

Heh, that is what I just sent them in an e-mail. And asked that they pass on my e-mail to someone who might be interested in contacting a community of interested players... we shall see what turns up.

I sent them an email too - Here's my reply:
Quote:
AngBa,
Thanks for your interest in Unleash.
I've had a little flurry of emails resulting from the unfiction board. Funny how the internet works.
Unfortunately I can't 'interfere' with the game in that way. It absolutely has to emerge at its own pace.
There are good reasons why, and I'm sure as the game grows you'll bump into it again, and become wakened,
and understand more about why.
I'm sure the time will come when somebody you know is aware enough to try and wake you.
Thanks though, its flattering that the game is so intriguing.
Ian.

Thanks Phaedra,
Unleash looks a little hard-core for me. But I've ordered a starter kit of PerplexCity, so I'll see how the ARG-thang goes!
Neat premise.
