[Donnie Darko] The Official Website....

Ok, my friends finally showed me the movie "Donnie Darko" last night and wow, my head still hurts from that movie. And I still don't get it. If anyone here wants a really really good trip, go watch that movie.

And if you're done with watching the movie, then I invite you to this:
http://www.donniedarko.com. I'm not sure if this is just a promo for the new "Donnie Darko: Director's Cut" coming out, but this website is crazy insane, just like the movie.

However, be warned! If you didn't see the movie, don't bother to try this for two reasons:

1. It will make no sense, just like the movie makes no sense. A watching of the movie is almost a pre-requisite, becuase then the story of the website will make sense. (Well, not total sense, just more sense than normal.)
2. It gives hints and clues that help you make more sense of the movie. Just think of the movie and website like a pair that are interrelated. Parts of the website give insight into the movie while parts of the movie give insight into the website.

It's a pretty neat marriage of website and silver screen entertainment. So if you saw the Donnie and thought it made no sense, you might want to check out this "ARG". (I say this is an ARG because it has some ARGish elements, like fake alternate websites and e-mailing addresses.)

Man, a)thanks for bringing this up, I saw the site right after I first watched DD over a year ago but I always get a smile out of people just discovering it for various reasons, some noble and some more mocking (mostly the former in this case); and b)this should be in Timewasters, as it's not actually an ARG, rather a fun little diversion that helps to understand the plot of the movie better.

Sorry about the last post, I didn't mean it as an insult. For one thing, I had forgotten that the movie has been playing in theatres recently in 'Directors Cut' form, and also I think I chose poor wording in the post itself.

Thanks CB. I just saw the movie and HAD to resurface this thread. After watching it about 5 times, I made the following observation:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
-- Donnie's sister is DATING Frank the rabbit. he is the one outside honking when the engine falls! He is also at the party-- It was "real" Frank that said "Frank was here, went to get beer"-- not the Manipuated Dead Frank.
--the guy in the red jogging suit? The fat guy watching them kiss? He works for the FAA. You can see him-- in uniform-- when the FAA is investigating Donnie's house. He is apparently following Donnie around.
--though Gretchen dies, and should have incredible power as a manipulated dead, she does not appear to Donnie. Odd.

I understand most of the time travel in the movie, right down to what his pills are made of. But I still have a few questions. Anyone care to answer?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Why does the psychologist urgently call the house the night of the party?
What happens to Gretchen's mom?
Why were the guys breaking into Grandma Death's house?
Edit ^^^^ Its because of her gem collection, which Donnie's dad mentions.

Finally, a question... do you think that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cellar door

is a beautiful phrase? I do.

Oh, and if it bugs anyone, feel free to move it to timewasters... where it might have belonged in the first place

What happens to Gretchen's mom?

presumably, she was attacked, making sure gretchen went to donnie, so that the course of events where they go to grandma deaths house and she gets run over happens. would donnie have done what he did if not? would he have shot frank (and so making him able to travel back through time and contact donnie)? etc etc

Damn, this is killing me. Is level one supposed to show nothing but a blank screen?

Got to be one of my favourite movies ever. I sat for hours after watching it on the site, and finally completed it. This was about a year ago, and I still watch it every now and then.

Yeah, its important to make sure you have any pop-up bllockers off.
Also, it ends quite abruptly at level 3... so sad.

So anyone else REALLY wishing Philosophy of Time Travel was a real book?

I have an unholy curse associated with the movie. Every time I sit down and try to watch the whole thing something bad happens and I have to rush off or I fall asleep... Sad I still haven't seen the whole movie and by my count I've been interrupted 11 times Mad The beginning I know by heart tho, and it kicks ass...scariest rabbit ever!!! Oh and a hell yes about the book being real!

Sarah, in response to your question about why the psychiatrist called Donnie's house, she was worried that Donnie may do something (ie kill people, suicide, etc) because of what their last session revealed (that the world was going to end, that frank was going to kill, etc)...
