E-mail from Alyssa

As a reply to an earlier e-mail I sent about the new mp3, I got this:

Quote:
Mr. Schapin,

I really appreciate your writing me. I gotta admit I'm still a little
frazzled by this whole mess. Josh was the one person who treated
me nicely after Vic was murdered, but I'll be damned if I don't
know what to believe about anything anymore, least of all about him.

I wish I could answer your questions, but I've got the same questions
you do. That message was on my answering machine when I got home
about two weeks ago. All I can say for sure is that it was Josh, and
that the voice at the end scared me so much I almost deleted it right away!

I haven't heard from him since, so I was kinda hoping either he or one
of his "friends" would find it and write be back. Are you with that cult he
was telling me about? I don't believe all that drug ring stuff -- Josh told
me all about his "friends" before he left, but I guess if you were with
them you wouldn't be looking for him now would ya?

I guess I'm really not that good at this web stuff -- I'm going to quit this
job as soon as I can find something better. Which is kind of why I'm looking
for Josh, but that's between me and him.

If you do hear from him, please let me know! I promise I won't tell
that Agent Wilson anything -- even with the reward they're offering,
Josh means more to me than that.

I promise to let you know if I do hear anything. If he trusted you before
then I can trust you now. Please keep me in mind if you do hear from him too!

a.a.

So Rebekah has been offering a reward...
I've replied telling her Rebekah is not a trustworthy person, and asked her about the events mentioned in the News-part of her website.

Ms. Corla,

I'm guessing you're not a part of that cult that sees things
in their dreams...the ones that Josh was telling me about
before he left. Otherwise I'm sure you'd know where he
is already. So I wish I could say I knew who you were,
but I don't =(

I'm afraid I don't know where he is, either. I got that message
on my answering machine about two weeks ago, and it scared
me so much I almost deleted it. Too many strange things have
happened since Vic was murdered. So I put it on the webpage,
hoping that he or one of his friends would see it and get in
touch.

I don't like this at all. I just want my normal life back!

Anyway...I'm sure Josh would be very happy to know that he's
got so many people looking for him. I'm guessing that the
reward that Agent Wilson has been offering has lots of people
joining the search. There are too many greedy people here that
are all too willing to just accept what people tell them.

For what it's worth, I don't believe that "Drug Ring" story for a
minute.

Well, if you do hear anything, please let me know! I promise
I'll keep in touch if I hear anything on this end.

I'll be sure to send you our town's e-newsletter when it gets
written...I'm not sure why so many people who don't live here are
so interested in it, but who am I to judge? This isn't New York, just
a small town, after all!

Mr. Schapin,

Josh had always been sincere with me, but before he left there was
something...different...about him that made me uncomfortable.
Maybe it's just that he was just in a bad situation. I don't know.
I wish I had gotten to know him as well as you did -- we were really
becoming close, but he was always more concerned with my problems
than I his. I never realized until it was too late that he might have
problems, but now if there's anything I can do to help I'll be there!

I don't know about these "friends" he's with, either. They seemed
to be in quite a hurry to get away from whatever the authorities
wanted them for, and knowing Josh is mixed up in all that doesn't
make me feel any better. If he becomes a burden, would they just
ditch him? Or worse?

That web page was really a combination of a decent template, and
Josh's help. I really didn't have as much to do with it as I'd like,
but as long as the town keeps paying me I'll keep working on it.

After Josh left, I met his father. He promised not to charge me
for rent for as long as I stayed here, and I wasn't going to just turn
him down. While that helps with my bills, I got the impession that
he didn't mean he wanted me to stay forever. I think he bought that
Drug Ring story entirely, because he's pretty upset with his son right
now.

I don't know all the details, but last month Vanessa suddenly turned
herself in and offered to testify against Bruce in Vic's murder. Not
long after, Vanessa was found dead and Bruce was gone. Beyond
that, there's not much else to tell. I think the last story was that
Bruce was going to make a run for the border, but that's so cliche
that noone believed it. I wonder if those weird messages on the old
page had anything to do with it....but as I said, that part of my life
is over.

I didn't trust Agent Wilson, but I know a lot of people aren't so
careful. If there's one thing I can be sure of, it's that she doesn't
want anything good for Josh.

Ms. Shapin, I apologize!

Just before Josh left, he was really weirding out on people for
no reason. It was like he had suddenly developed extreme
paranoia or something. I can imagine that people, if they
noticed, could believe that he was on drugs as a way to
explain the change. After he explained his dreams to me
and how they were connected with the picture of Vic on the
website, I really didn't understand everything but I knew that,
on some level, he did it for me so I felt I should trust him. =)

Wilson's a stone cold bitch -- that's why I didn't trust her. She
treats everyone like they're on a level beneath her. Maybe
that's just how government agents in dark suits are trained to
behave, I dunno. But there was just something in her eyes that
made me feel like every word out of her mouth was bullshit, and
I don't feel any different today.

What do I know about Vic's murder? Oh god, too much.

That I was partially responsible for it.
That it was my blindness to his cheating that let it get out of hand.
That Josh said it was because Vic stole some money from Bruce,
and Bruce was trying to get it back. I still don't understand all
he said, about messages in dreams and hidden on the webpage,
but as soon as he said he knew without a doubt it was Bruce I
believed him. Bruce is a cold, ruthless man -- I met him a couple
times when visiting Vic. Which, I guess, explained Vanessa's
interest in him. That whore deserved to die, and if Bruce did kill
her then it's poetic justice.

They're talking the big C for him if they catch him, so that's why
everyone thinks he ran for the border. If he goes get spotted,
no cop in the county would hesitate to shoot first and say they thought he
had a gun. He's got the kind of bad rep that follows you around worse
than the smell of dogshit on the bottom of your shoe.

Personally, I'd feel better if he was in jail getting raped every night for
the rest of his life. But him getting shot wouldn't be the worst thing
to happen.

Ms. Corla,

I'm sorry if I offended you. I've been getting a lot
of email that's been really tearing at some old
wounds, so if I sounded a bit edgy I apologize. It
seems that my little cry for help has drawn more
attention than I expected. I just wanted Josh to let
me know he was okay -- that message didn't do much
to make me feel any better!

Josh went on for a long time about those messages,
and to be honest I really didn't catch all the details. If
you were involved in helping him figure it all out, thank
you. I don't think I'm being watched -- I haven't felt
like I've been, anyway. No strange cars parked outside
my house, no buzzing on my phone line, if that's what
you mean.

Wilson and her team were in town for a couple days last
month, but when they realized there really wasn't any
big conspiracy in our sleeply little town they left without
much fanfare. I think the news said the next day that they
didn't even pay their hotel bill -- typical Government bullshit.
Aside from the occasional reminder about the reward for
info on Josh's whereabouts, we haven't seen much from them.

That's why I felt safe enough to post that message now. I doubt
that they're still watching -- people in that position usually have
bigger fish to fry, and I just want to know that Josh is okay.

As for that reward, by the time they were done half the town
believed that he was the biggest drug dealer in the county. Not
that we've had a drug problem here -- when a highschooler gets
caught with a joint it's on the front page of the newspaper, which
is another reason this is all so suspicious.

I guess I can understand why recent events have made Apple
Harbor so fascinating, in the sort of way a trainwreck is. Most
of us are just hoping to get back on with our daily lives, me
included. No offense, but I just pray our next newsletter is nice
and boring!

Ms. Corla,

Thank you for your understanding. I'm just concerned,
and I would feel a lot better if I just knew he was ok.

At this point, having Josh back and having everything
Back to Normal almost feel like different goals.
When Josh was around, it wasn't Normal. I'm not even
sure what I mean when I say normal anymore. Maybe
it's just not having to worry about someone you care
about.

Ms. Schapin,

After his accident, Josh went from acting like a normal teenager to
acting like a man on the run. Even though the official word said
there was no drug use detected, not everyone believed that. Just
before he'd left, he was constantly looking around him, started at
the slightest movement. If you say he handled himself remarkably
well, I'd hate to know how he would have been if he didn't.

Agent Wilson has power, I'll give you that. Just by staring at you, she
makes you feel completely transparent. You don't cross that kind of
person without a serious death wish.

I spent a long time blaming myself for Vic even before Josh told me
what happened. I know, on one level, that nothing I could have
done would have saved him. And yet, I was so angry...I was so mad...

Nevertheless, what's done is done.

Oscar and I have an arrangement. That's between me and him. And
no, it doesn't involve sex, not that it's any of your concern.

Sweet dreams. I hope we have news of Josh soon.

a.a.

Hmm, I wonder what kind of arrangement Oscar and Alyssa have....

In one of the last e-mails, Alyssa mentioned something I think is new information. At least, it was to me...

Quote:
Yeah, I met Vic while I was recovering in the Hospital. Something
was wrong with my eye, and he made it better. He had just gotten
out of a bad relationship with Vanessa, and then he rescued me!
It couldn't have been any more perfect. Except...he never did end
it with her. He kept seeing her behind my back, the jerk! Look
what it got you!

So Vic was in a relationship with Vanessa even before he hooked up with Alyssa. No idea if this is any useful in the future.

I also asked Alyssa to join us on IRC. Still awaiting her reply. God, I'm dying for some action here!

Alright! We finally have some movement.

I invited Alyssa to IRC, and she said she'd try to make it tonight, between 7.30 and 8 PM EST.
We talked about nicknames, and she said she likes 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and maybe she should just name herself Stella. I proposed 'Belle Reve' as it's the mansion's name in that play/movie, and it means 'Beautiful Dream' in French (thought it was appropriate Wink ). Anyway, this is from her last e-mail:

Quote:
That's an interesting choice for a nickname, too...I'll pick one
and surprise you...but you'll still know it's me =/

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you all tonite.
Especially your strange friend, Subject4354h. He's been
sending me the oddest emails. I don't quite know what they
mean, but I can't wait to find out

So I guess Kitten and Alyssa have something in common there...

Anyway, on the time she said earlier:

Quote:
I'll try to be
on if I can sometime around 7:30pm or 8pm. If I can't, I'll
try again tomorrow after my appointment, around 12pm. EST, of course.

She wants to meet Josh's friends, so be there!

4th post in a row... I wonder why none of the others Alyssa is e-mailing with have anything interesting yet. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid. Either way, here we go again. Oh, and I mentioned Kitten in the last e-mail as one of the people who would love to meet her.

Quote:
Schapin,

No...I don't believe I've ever heard from "Kitten". I thought these
emails were some kind of inside joke for whatever Josh used to
talk to you about. I always get them in pieces, and I have to kind
of guess on the order. I have part of one here, I'll copy it for you:

----
<initializing aegisprotocol1.9d>
<undetermined length, stage five>
<WHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHEREWHERE>
<malformed request>
<match: 0>
<log/audio: Dr. P "Bidirectional Communication test, phase 1. Please begin.">
----

I really don't get the joke, but I was happy to be included. Then, I was
excited about learning what it meant tonite. Now, I'm not quite sure
what to think. =/

a.a.

A few thoughts:
- Should we ask her for all the e-mails she got? Apparently she got different ones than Kitten. Did anyone else get e-mails from this Subject4354h?
- Should we tell her about IU? Pro's: she can post her ideas and findings etc. there. Con's: I'm not sure how she'll respond to what's already there. Afaik Josh told her everything, but she never mentioned Oscar in the story he told her, so maybe she doesn't know about his involvement... She has some sort of agreement with him, after all. Non sexual, mind you. Not that it's any of my business, of course Razz
- There were other thoughts but I forgot about them while typing the previous ones.
- Oh, and everyone should get on IRC tonight!

Subject: They're gone

I just took a drive out by Shoreline drive.

There were a couple police cars and about a dozen
uniformed officers walking around the beach where
the vagrants had set up camp. I stopped and was
asked to leave, but I got a few questions in before
I left. The officer, who I didn't recognize and thankfully
didn't recognize me, wouldn't get into many specifics,
but he did tell me a bit.

The vagrants are all gone. Nobody saw them leave.
They left whatever they had brought or built, but
there was noone there this morning.

Except the crazy old one. They found him hanging
from a rope tied around his neck.

I don't know how much more I'll be able to find out on
my own. I'll keep asking around, but I have a feeling
I'll have to wait for the Real reporters to get their
stories so I can read about it in the newspaper tomorrow.

God, I feel so sorry for that old man. Was there
anything I could have done to help him, before this
happened to him? Gosh, he was annoying, but it
wasn't something worth killing the poor man for!

vagrants

I mailed Alyssa, asking her about the murdered vagrant. I suggested that it might have been a suicide. This is what she wrote:

Quote:
"No...no, it wasn't suicide. They cut out one of his eyes before they
hung him. I didn't see it...thank god!...but it was still quite a shock
to hear. He didn't appear sane, but is that any reason to do this to him? The poor man!"
