if anyone's curious, I've got my notes page setup to show the PPC timeline of events and the RW timeline of events... including events that happen in either world with unknown dates (ie cache logs)

http://www.thebruce.ca/PerplexCity/Timeline_PPC.asp
http://www.thebruce.ca/PerplexCity/Timeline_RW.asp

At this point the pages are rough (ie, not like my ILB timelines Smile) but hey, I've gotta work too... the main pages have summaries of the items, and if there's an original course, it's linked either in a popup or to the original location.

(note: maybe I should change "Lyssa's mooning of 'James'" to "Lyssa's mooning on 'James'" Laughing )

And my summary of the newspaper articles, with the compiled known article is at the bottom of this page

Just another reference in the cloud of player sites Smile

ok got shot down in flames on irc but i thought id park this spec here-- please forgive if its junk

-------------------------------------

As far as we can now tell The Academy was founded in around five seven three BC. Certainly it can be shown to exist by the year five seven one BC when we learn from the journal of Degabus of Malme that an groupe of scholars have late taken residence in the city:
-------------------------------
so best guess at early date is 573BC
-----------------------------------------
Later the same year, Degabus notes a behaviour pattern that might be familiar to the more junior members of the academy:

Today the scholares of Beston cellars may rightly be called the natural inheritors of those brewing rooms. For I observed this night in Thilke market as I returned home after dining with Mr Shaarten, a supposed scholar whom I identified by his cap, drunken and reeling in the street.

I made as to pass by him swiftly, but he being jovial in his cups, called out:

"Hi sir, would you pass by a scholar without raising your arm?"

Quoth I: "I see no scholar here sir, unless it be a scholar of the sweetened sleep."

Quoth he: "Sir, think you that viti culture is no subject for study?"
------------------------------------------------
that olde style english quote is no earlier that 15th century english -- 500 - 600 yrs ago and almost certainly a lot later

so date 1 BC is roughly now
------------------------------------------------

the latest date we have is about 235 AC

which makes that date in our future or their yrs are shorter

tanner,

I still don't understand what the big problem is. You are saying that that quote can't have been written more than 600 years ago, right? Fine, let's take it as our given #1. Given #2 is that it must have been written in AC, as people in BC wouldn't know that they're in BC.

That means that the earliest date that quote could have been written on is 1 AC. Some guy (our quote writer) in 1 AC or later is talking about things that took place in 573 BC, and 443 BC, etc. The quote writer is not quoting Degabus (who would have written in VI BC, and if he (Degabus) used the same style, we would have had a problem). So the quote writer is writing roughly 600 years before *now*. All that means is that *now* is at least 600 after 1 AC, and possibly even later.

Therefore, Perplex City *now* is at least 600 AC - well, roughly, anyway - and the last attempt to steal the Cube happened at least 365 years ago - assuming that your dating of the language is correct (I'm not doubting it, btw, I just felt compelled to include this).

*shrugs*

they are different bits -- the ones mentioning dates are written now maybe -- but the bit quoted do not mention a date so they didnt need to know years BC --- like we say in the year xxxxBC some greek wrote this "yyyy" --- didnt mean the ancient greek knew what BC was

but never mind Sad

(and i thought this would be a safe hole in the ground Razz )

*OH!*
I've been trying to fFigure out this debate fFor a while now -- since it was opened up -- And i think i get it now.

Tanner is saying the Degabus' quote, dated 573, sounds as though it uses language fFrom about 600 years ago. Yanka, on the otherhand, says the whole article uses language fFrom about 600 years ago.

The implications here being if tanner is right, then we are now very close to the year 1. which is a big weighty thing to imply, I add.

I am given to agree with tanner more than yanka, because Degabus' text seems closer to 600 years old, while the main article body seems closer to modern.

However, I don't think it's really quite true to say the current date is approaching the year 1. I believe it's reasonable to say Degabus' text is, in fFact, MORE than 600 years old. maybe 900 or so. Which leaves plenty of time fFor all that other stuff to happen, placing the current year closer to 300 AC. which seems about reasonable.

with 2004 being 276AC that means the ACBC divide was 1737 our time. Not a year that I can think of much offhand.

on a separate note, at least their years seem the same (if their zodiac isn't quite) would have been a whole heap of fun dealing with a completely different calendar ! http://tinyurl.com/3stxb

Off by a year

Not to be sticky, but if their years are like ours, then there is no year zero. So 1 AC is 1738, and 1BC is 1737 for them. Just because that shift all other things off a year, it is good to note. The only interesting thing I saw in 1738, was the excavation of the herculaneum.

It's getting hard to organise my thoughts right now. So many theories, ideas and specs spinning through my head. Which thread will it go in? Well for now it's this one, so here goes.

Time is a strong element of the game and this latest theory was the result of lots of snippets of info i've digested today, so I can't really explain exactly where it came from. Anyway, the general upshot of the theory is that somehow it is us who go back in time and steal The Cube and bring it to Earth in order to return it to Sente. The purpose of this would be for Sente to indirectly teach us about his world by staging the theft. It's extremely complicated, but I get the feeling that eventually we will learn enough about the Academy and it's defences that we will be able to disbale 3 different types of security systems.

It's very far fetched and quite paradoxial (is that a word?), but it's the way my mind is working at the mo.

I know if I had to finish the story, this is the kind of plot twist I would write.
