[Excavation] trailhead

FYI... "Samuel" popped in #unfiction early this morning when noone was awake to post his "blog." Something about a "strange e-mail" and "he had to leave".

http://samueldodge.blogspot.com/

Never one to leave a puzzle unpuzzled, i looked.
Basically, there is an archaelogical theme, and the first two codes are
1311571651620401631451431651621511641710
40151163040160141164150145164151143056

;phom@ yjrdyptu [sdd@ nrhomd

and the mysterious e-mail is signed -Felsoruy

solution to the numbers
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it's clear that they numbers are 3 digit numbers. I couldn't convert them to ascii or ebcidic, but since 040 and 056 are the odd digits out, I converted the rest to a cryptogram, and ran it though oneacross.com....
"Your security is pathetic."

solution to the letters
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Simply a keyboard shift. Move your fingers one key to the left, and you get login@thestory pass@begins

and the signature
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
-Felsoruy is an anagram of "Yourself"

I just missed where to put the login.

Oh.. I missed the signature part, but, just for the record, the numbers are Octal.

Yeah, I awoke to the following email from Sam:

Quote:
I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I need help, and I think time is running out. Some strange stuff is happening, the place I work for just hit a huge find on an archaeological excavation and ever since big trouble has started. I got a strange E-mail this morning and… well I don't have time to get into it. I have a blog up with details, please help me find out what it means – it's freaking me out. I don't know what you do, but I heard you guys are the best at puzzles and strange happenings – please, if you can find time, please try to help me out.

Do the numbers in the in the senders email address mean anything? "b435c0b705031414576a2c4372" And why is the address @mail.gmail.com?

Thats not the senders address

Message-ID: b435c0b705031414576a2c4372SPLATmail.gmail.com

this means exactly as it says, its the message id, basiclly each email that passed through a server is saved temp on the harddrive with a ID number, and the mail.gmail.com is the name of the server netside Smile

The message ID is usually stored so if needed you can trace the path of it across servers with the mailserver logs

Hoped this helped Smile

the date on the message first reads "Wed, March 16, 2005" Then on the next line, it reads "Mon, March 16th, 2005". Is that just a weird coincidence?

* Poke changes his name to hkdl
Quote:
SamuelDodge: Hello?
PokeKiller2k: Hello...
SamuelDodge: I'm Sam, I found your name on a puzzle site - I think you are some friends were the ones who solved my strange E-mail
PokeKiller2k: Ah, yes, that's why your name seemed familiar
SamuelDodge: Here come the 'Dodge' jokes eh?
PokeKiller2k: Maybe if I knew some
SamuelDodge: Good job you don't, I used to get teased at school
PokeKiller2k: :-\
SamuelDodge: Nevermind, best not go there
SamuelDodge: I just need someone to talk to really, things have been strange lately
SamuelDodge: With the find and everything
PokeKiller2k: Yeah, I can imagine...
PokeKiller2k: Do you have any idea what that "your security" bit was referring to?
SamuelDodge: No, none at all. I instantly thought computer-wise, I mean by the looks of it someone was ON my account
PokeKiller2k: Well, that's the creepy part... The name of the person that signed it - Felsoruy - is an anagram for "Yourself"
SamuelDodge: That freaks me out
SamuelDodge: Someone is toying with me, they must be showing off that they were on my account
SamuelDodge: I hate hackers so much
PokeKiller2k: I dunno... This could be serious
SamuelDodge: Yeah, no joke
SamuelDodge: and if this is connected to the other weird stuff that has been going on then I'm ready to be really scared
PokeKiller2k: Speaking of which, specifically what kind of stuff has been happening?
SamuelDodge: Well, an hour after the find in the excavation we had the first phonecall
SamuelDodge: I don't know what the person on the other end (if it is a person) is saying because our secretary takes all the calls
SamuelDodge: and it's been difficult to get to her with all the mad confusion in the office
SamuelDodge: We've had about 5 of these calls so far, we can't trace the number to my knowledge
SamuelDodge: that's not the half of it though
SamuelDodge: Damn, I really shouldn't be talking to you about this next bit
PokeKiller2k: Huh? Why? What's wrong?
SamuelDodge: Well, Mr. Rivala, my boss, swore us all to secrecy for the time being, he wants to straighten our facts out before he gets the authorities involved
SamuelDodge: Alright, I'll tell you, but only share it among your friends, don't tell anyone of any importance and DON'T contact the police
PokeKiller2k: We won't tell anyone Wink
SamuelDodge: He he, I'll take that as a reassuring wink
SamuelDodge: Well, basically, we've lost two archaeologists - they've vanished into thin air. They were the two who first discovered whatever is down in that pit they dug up
PokeKiller2k: ... That's not good
SamuelDodge: They share lifts from work, and we don't think either made it home
SamuelDodge: no phones are being answered
SamuelDodge: no doors either
SamuelDodge: And we can't find the car they used to drive home that evening
SamuelDodge: No... it's not good
PokeKiller2k: That's really creepy... And you don't know what they found?
SamuelDodge: No, I have no idea. It's all really hush-hush, all the people who've worked on that dig have been sworn to secrecy and the excavation has been shut down. This NEVER happens, and I'm almost always told about the latest finds and stuff - I'm just interested to know what goes on. Everytime I or another colleague who is in a similar situation to me asks one of them we get the cold shoulder.
PokeKiller2k: Hm... That's never good...
SamuelDodge: No, it's not.
SamuelDodge: I really don't know what's going on, and I'm hoping this E-mail doesn't mean that I'm being made involved

At this point, I have officially run out of things to say.
Quote:
PokeKiller2k: What is it that you do there? Something about the budget?

Long pause (I imagined he was laughing at me)
Quote:
SamuelDodge: Sorry about that
PokeKiller2k: It's alright
SamuelDodge: Good
SamuelDodge: Damnit, more equipment order are coming through, looks like I've got work to do
SamuelDodge: thanks for talking, I'll be in contact soon
PokeKiller2k: Okay... Bye
SamuelDodge: Bye

New to this arg but i read Sam's blog this morning. Does anyone know there's been an update?

Quote:
It's me again, still haven't had the time to fix my internet at home – so I'm having to use work. Great job on the E-mail, you are all amazing with numbers and stuff – which is pretty embarrassing as I specialize in them. I can't work out why it says it came from my inbox; does that mean that whoever sent it to me must have been IN my account? How the hell would anyone know my password? It's just jumbles of letters! I also can't think off the top of my head what this user and password is for, nothing I know I'm sure.

I talked to someone last night, I don't know whether they told you but more stuff I haven't told you about has been going on. I didn't mention the phone calls – literally an hour after we found whatever it is, we began to get phone calls to our main office. Cassie, our secretary, is picking them up and they're frightening her. I haven't had time to talk to her about them, this place is absolutely manic, but one of my colleagues said something about clicking. I don't know what it means but when I get a chance I'll check it up. Well it's about time I release the saddest news, I mentioned disappearances in my last post – well their names are Thomas Klune and Harry Cosner. Both are archaeologists and were the first to discover whatever is down in that excavation. They share lifts to and from work – neither of them have been seen since leaving that evening and they aren't answering their doors or phones. As far as I know we have found no sign of the car they used to travel home, they just simply vanished. You would think we would have got the police involved, but we haven't, our manager Mr. Rivala says things are under control for now and he wants to straighten our facts out first. I'm worried guys; we're all worried over here. I haven't sensed an atmosphere like this in a long time… and the secrecy… everything involving this dig is completely under wraps. I just want to know what's going on.

Looks interesting

Sam has updated his blog again.

Quote:
The mail
Hey guys, I know I've already posted today, and it's a lot for you to take in (to be honest it is for me too), but we had something strange in the mail half an hour ago:

http://img106.exs.cx/img106/1087/paperslip6uo.jpg

It came in a small sealed envelope and was rolled up. No-one I have shown it to knows what the hell it means. Somebody is playing with us, and I seriously don't like the feeling. You can contact me via E-mail (samuel.dodgeSPLATgmail.com), AIM (SamuelDodge) or you can comment on my blog.

SamuelDodge (3:43:33 PM): Hey there
SamuelDodge (3:43:42 PM): Who might you be?
SlvrThistle (3:43:46 PM): It's Corla, --Email removed--
SamuelDodge (3:43:56 PM): Oh, hello Corla!
SlvrThistle (3:44:06 PM): We figured out that note means 'I am the gate master'
SamuelDodge (3:44:14 PM): You are one of the people who helped uncover the meaning of my strange E-mail
SamuelDodge (3:44:32 PM): yes, very well done, I thought it was some different language
SlvrThistle (3:45:08 PM): If you take the symbols in twos and combine them, you get letters.
SlvrThistle (3:45:43 PM): I was going about it in a more complicated way, but one of my friends figured out it worked like that.
SamuelDodge (3:46:23 PM): It's quite clever, but I think the real puzzle lies in who sent it to us
SlvrThistle (3:46:34 PM): Yes
SlvrThistle (3:47:01 PM): Hm... What sites are you signed up at online? Maybe the login is for one of them.
SamuelDodge (3:47:21 PM): Hmm, my E-mail, my blog
SamuelDodge (3:47:27 PM): Hmm
SlvrThistle (3:48:00 PM): Does your company have a website?
SamuelDodge (3:48:06 PM): I guess there's my company's web site
SamuelDodge (3:48:13 PM): I didn't think it would be relevant
SamuelDodge (3:48:24 PM): nobody could get into it could they?
SlvrThistle (3:48:24 PM): Hm... actually, maybe it's a login for one of your computers.
SamuelDodge (3:48:33 PM): Yeah, it could be
SlvrThistle (3:48:38 PM): What's the website?
SamuelDodge (3:48:51 PM): Our computers use the same login as the website
SamuelDodge (3:48:57 PM): www.thetombteam.tk
SamuelDodge (3:49:03 PM): that's the company web page
SlvrThistle (3:49:50 PM): ... It works
SamuelDodge (3:50:01 PM): what does?
SlvrThistle (3:50:07 PM): The login
SamuelDodge (3:50:34 PM): Whih login, the one from the E-mail?
SlvrThistle (3:50:44 PM): Yes
SamuelDodge (3:51:15 PM): What does it say?
SamuelDodge (3:51:22 PM): Is it a staff member page
SlvrThistle (3:51:54 PM): Look for yourself. There's a bunch of binary and other stuff on it.
SamuelDodge (3:52:12 PM): hang on, let me fire up the old netscape
SlvrThistle (3:52:33 PM): The binary decodes to 'I know you are helu are helclues will make you suffer.'
SamuelDodge (3:53:23 PM): weird
SamuelDodge (3:53:28 PM): what does that mean?
SlvrThistle (3:53:40 PM): I don't know
SlvrThistle (3:55:44 PM): Bolded letters read 'icaNGetanhernoniafemoerlrdwillRi'?
SamuelDodge (3:56:14 PM): What the?
SamuelDodge (3:56:24 PM): This page...
SamuelDodge (3:56:32 PM): It was a default
SlvrThistle (3:56:38 PM): But it's been changed
SamuelDodge (3:56:50 PM): crap I've seen this, basically it's the database default page
SamuelDodge (3:57:03 PM): that's impossible to get at, we've got tight security
SlvrThistle (3:59:30 PM): :S
SlvrThistle (4:01:45 PM): 'I can get anywhere no one is a femyoer lord will rise'
SamuelDodge (4:02:29 PM): I haven't got my glasses on, I can't see the bold letters
SamuelDodge (4:02:33 PM): that sounds creepy
SamuelDodge (4:02:40 PM): Jesus what the hell is all this about
SlvrThistle (4:02:45 PM): What's a 'femyoer'?
SamuelDodge (4:02:50 PM): I wish it would all become clear
SamuelDodge (4:02:53 PM): I have no idea
SlvrThistle (4:02:58 PM): I went into the source to make sure I got them all.
SamuelDodge (4:03:11 PM): oh right
SlvrThistle (4:03:51 PM): Hm... '8 qj 5y3 tq53jqw534'
SamuelDodge (4:04:36 PM): Argh, my brain is going to explode
SlvrThistle (4:04:36 PM): 'I am the gatemaster'
SlvrThistle (4:04:42 PM): Again.
SamuelDodge (4:04:44 PM): Again!?
SamuelDodge (4:05:33 PM): What is going on!?
SlvrThistle (4:06:50 PM): There must be some clue we're overlooking that will help figure this out...
SamuelDodge (4:07:09 PM): I don't know... it's all so confusing
SamuelDodge (4:08:21 PM): Well, it's nearly time to go home. I need sleep, it's been a hard day
SlvrThistle (4:08:31 PM): Okay, bye.
SamuelDodge (4:08:57 PM): Thank you for your help, and I'll stay in touch. Please remember to share what you know so we can all work as a team - we need all the help we can get
SlvrThistle (4:09:09 PM): Of course
SlvrThistle (4:09:12 PM): No problem
SamuelDodge (4:09:17 PM): goodbye! Thank you!

Great solve, xrate! I was SO overthinking that one. I spent some time this morning looking up ancient alphabets, trying to find one that both a "T" and an upside-down "T." Very Happy

In other news, I just finished chatting with Sam:

Quote:

Session Start (AIM - WanderingAngela:SamuelDodge): Thu Mar 17 14:45:22 2005
WanderingAngela: Hello - I saw your blog and thought I'd offer my assistance.
SamuelDodge: Hello there
SamuelDodge: I'm Sam, but you probably already know that
WanderingAngela: I'm Angela. Smile
WanderingAngela: How's it going?
SamuelDodge: It's all pretty stressful
SamuelDodge: there's lots going on
WanderingAngela: It sounds like it. Anything new since your blog entry?
WanderingAngela: I saw the decoded message - "I am the gatekeeper"
WanderingAngela: Pretty creepy.
WanderingAngela: *(gatemaster)
SamuelDodge: Yeah, you're telling me, it's freaking me out
SamuelDodge: I spoke to cassie today about the phonecalls
SamuelDodge: She said something about clicking and beeping
WanderingAngela: Really? That's strange.
WanderingAngela: No voice?
SamuelDodge: Nope, none at all
SamuelDodge: it's scaring her
WanderingAngela: Huh. Could it be morse code?
SamuelDodge: Yes, I hadn't thought of that
SamuelDodge: Oh, my font as changed
SamuelDodge: damn font
WanderingAngela: Is there any way she could record a call? Someone might be trying to send a message.
WanderingAngela: Or if she could just jot it down...
SamuelDodge: She has recorded them to a tape
SamuelDodge: but she won't give them to me
SamuelDodge: I think my boss wants her to hang on to them
WanderingAngela: Secretive group you work with!
WanderingAngela: Do you think your boss knows what's going on and doesn't want anyone to find out?
SamuelDodge: Yeah, can't blame them really, whatever they found in that damn excavation must be big
SamuelDodge: Mr. Rivala wouldn't do that
SamuelDodge: He's like a father to us
WanderingAngela: Do you know anything about the site? What type of excavation, or what culture?
SamuelDodge: Nope, nothing
SamuelDodge: which is unusual
SamuelDodge: I'm going to try and find some stuff about the museum who hired us tomorrow
WanderingAngela: That's good. I know a little about archaeology, if that can help.
WanderingAngela: Once you have some details, anyway.
SamuelDodge: That's good, brilliant even, I know nothing Razz
SamuelDodge: I just work with the budget and accounts
WanderingAngela: I know enough to get in trouble. Smile
WanderingAngela: It seems unfair that you're being pulled into this, but no one will share what they know with you.
SamuelDodge: I'm just the money guy
SamuelDodge: well... they don't really know I'm being pulled into this
WanderingAngela: Ah... I see.
SamuelDodge: It's irrelevant, they've got tougher stuff to handle
SamuelDodge: like poor Tom and Harry
WanderingAngela: Any news on that?
SamuelDodge: Still nothing. No phones are being answered, no doors, still no sign of their travel back home
WanderingAngela: Ug. That doesn't sound good at all. It's been several days now, right?
SamuelDodge: My boss hasn't even informed their family
SamuelDodge: Yeah
SamuelDodge: The police aren't involved yet
WanderingAngela: That seems like a bad idea. The families will be furious when they find out.
SamuelDodge: I know
SamuelDodge: But Mr. Rivala wants 'to get facts straight' first
WanderingAngela: Your boss must know something - wouldn't he call the police otherwise?
SamuelDodge: I think he's scared we'll be sued
WanderingAngela: And that's more important than finding out what happened to his employees? Pretty harsh.
SamuelDodge: he had a word to me about it, he will inform the police I'm sure
SamuelDodge: Well, it must have something to do with the excavation site
WanderingAngela: Yeah. Anything you can find out about that would be very useful, I'm sure.
SamuelDodge: Yes, but I don't want to be or to cause trouble at the moment
SamuelDodge: so I'm going to have to be secretive about it
WanderingAngela: Yes, you should definitely be careful.
WanderingAngela: But if you happen to see notes lying around the office...
SamuelDodge: Exactly...
WanderingAngela: ...or photographs...
WanderingAngela: Good luck with that!
SamuelDodge: Thanks
SamuelDodge: I'll need it
WanderingAngela: Take care of yourself, and let me know if I can help. You can also email me at xxxxxxSPLATyahoo.com.
WanderingAngela: But I'll watch the blog.
SamuelDodge: That's great, I thank you so much. Remember to share what you know, we needd to work as a team
WanderingAngela: Sure thing.
