Samuel has responded...

Well done, Misery! I don't know where I would be without you guys, I have no clue how you managed that, I'm in awe. However, on a more morbid note, that message does not sound good. Does it imply that this situation could get any worse?

ive been following along and finally decided to join in!
could someone tell me some of the methods the guy is using to encrypt his puzzles and the methods u decoded them??? any programs? any common solve methods i should know about? please educate me so that i can help out Smile

New Update:

Quote:

Oh crap.
Hey. It's me. Something bad happened, really, really bad. I don't usually work on saturdays but today I was called in. There's been a break in and a kidnapping.

It was a guy called Indie Meurer, he's our cleaner. He's in college, so he works part time for the company to pay for college and his sports. I don't know how it is possible to kidnap a guy like that, he's a black belt in 4 martial arts and he's entered into our local gymnastic championships. He usually gets into work about 5 in the morning on saturdays in order to get to judo training at 9. I think it was one of our archeaologists who got in here first and saw Indie's cleaning equipment all across the floor in our main office, it looked like a nasty fight had gone on. Whoever it was must have been looking for something, everything is destroyed, thrown all over the room. Desks are overturned, filing cabinets have been emptied and chairs are laying across the room. I... I'm just in shock. On the wall it looks like... well... numbers written in blood. BLOOD! This is serious man, really serious. We're in real trouble here. The numbers are as follow:
2-16-9-12-25-3-21-5

There was also something else I noticed. The furniture has been arranged in a strange order, I noticed this because the accountancy documents were a dead giveaway. I knocked this up in photoshop, maybe it's another puzzle, I don't know:

Inserted image: http://img223.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img223&image=breakin1kz.jpg

I have to sort out our documents now, and the police will be here soon. Hopefully I'll be able to update later today. Thanks for listening, guys.

EDIT: i dunt know about the numbers, but for the image why did he use "X" for desks, instead of using "D" for desks? He used "C" for chairs, so why not "D" for desks? Is this just the way he wanted it...or does this hint that it is solveable by using the key/letters?

Also there are 13 chairs and 13 documents..just seems a bit odd...

Another thing, why would he put the door in the picture? is it hinting that we have to look at the image a different way? maybe it can be solved by holding the image sideways?

Googling "Indie Meurer" brought up nothing.

ANOTHER UPDATE:
Seeing how every desk is aligned up perfectly with every chair and document it seems this could be a chart or graph. Seeing how there is 13 docs and chairs also hints this. I was able to get the coordinates of every table, heres what they are, coordinates of every table, from left to right:

(1,3) (2,4) (5,4) (6,6) (10,13)

hope i helped Smile

I have tried assigning each of these numbers a letter and ROT-ing that, but it's hard to make anything of it. (Gives B P I L Y C U E).

[edit] Look here for the tools. They don't do much good if you don't use your imagination too though!

thanks, i just ofund that too. i tried roting it and im trying to understand modular encryption, but i dunt understand how it works. think u can help me understand it?

on the tutorial, it says that mod 28 with interval 3 becomes:

0 = a
1 = t
2 = k
3 = b

i dunt get how that works!?!!? 1 = t???

anyways im still trying to figure it out

UPDATE:
B P I L Y C U E , is most likely not the answer, but if u anagram it, u get PUBLIC YE. "Public Eye"??? hmmm 1 letter was missing in a previous puzzle this guy had so maybe this is the answer??? but it doesnt make any sense...hmmm im trying to mod it, but it doesnt make any sense!

any ideas on the diagram of the office?

It looks like an 'S' on it's side. Or maybe it's some kind of symbol? I don't know much about history and archeaology.

Craze3: I don't necessarily think that BPIL... is it, but if 1=a, 2=b, and so on, then those are the letters you get. If you ROT that, then you effectively get A=2, B=3... however it still doesn't help much. As for this modular thing... it's beyond me, so I'm not too sure.

Crowfoot: I don't think the graph is anything... at least, I'm finding it hard to see much, and the coords from earlier are puzzling me. I'm starting to think the numbers and the graph have to be combined. But.. 8 numbers, only 5 points on the graph... hmm...

If we don't figure it out, does that mean we don't get an update?

For the record, and to clear things up, the image of the office is a graph!
these are the coordinates of the tables:

(1,3) (2,4) (5,4) (6,6) (10,13)

i asked people in the chat room and they agreed.

Now another theory,
all the numbers on the wall, when subtracted (just type it into google), end up as -89. Negative Eighty Nine is a new band that is touring with Nine Inch Nails. Could this be an advertising arg?

Another thing is that BLIPYCUE can be anagramed to "clue by pi"?
3.14?

k well i just talked to dodge and the convo was erased. i was able to save the begining, but since i was on my palm pilot the rest was erased. im pissed, but i didnt get much info.

He said the cops came in and took blood samples and they're going to test it in the lab. he will get the results within 2-3 days and he will post it on his blog. The janitor, Indie, had been a fighting someone yesterday (karate), and the guy he was fighting was some judo dude. Anyways, dodge was talking to indie about the fight yesterday. Dodge said that other than that theres no other new news. I asked him for any helpful hints or tips, and he said that to solve the graph and the numbers on the wall, we're probably going to need to use math. He said that he just felt like this is different from the other puzzles and that he thought that this one is solvable by math.

So the graph with the tables on it, with the coords i posted earlier is correct. but now we need to find out how the coordinates mathemetically connect to the writings on the wall.

anyways im a total noob and im already figuring this stuff out so im really happy and proud of myself, but i wanna figure out how to SOLVE the writings on the wall. anyways good luck to everyone and post the latest news and breakthroughs.

I'm really stumped on this one. I do a lot of maths, so I should be good at it, but I'm not getting patterns that mean anything.

I've tried combining the two datasets into one graph, but that does nothing. I've tried combining the coords from the graph with the numbers, but still nothing. The annoying thing is, the numbers are screaming patterns, but I still cannot find a link between them. For instance, the differences between the numbers bring up no other patterns, putting them in order still leaves nothing much, and doing things to them (minus 1 from each, etc) seems to do nothing either. In fact, I don't even know what I'm trying to find. I just have a feeling that the numbers relate to each other somehow. And the two sets have to fit together. I can't see how that will happen. Changing them to letters seems meaningless now we know that there's a maths link. The graph itself follows no graph-shapes (like x 3 , for example), the gradients of the lines are boring (1, 0, 2, 7/4), and really I'm getting stumped.

Maybe it's something much simpler, like averages? I'll have another go and get back later.

M.

Noticed that the graph is 13x13. If you add the two sides up you get 26...perhaps each side of the graph represents part of an alphabet and you use the coordinates to make words?
