I won't speak for imbri, but I saw the design and it looks kind of like a networking resource for ARGers and those involved in the ARG scene.

Basically - imagine if the IMDB also included fans in its database. It would become a huge social networking site that revolved around movies. That's what this is (on paper and in my mind) only with ARGs.

There are 3 main sections (though they're all connected): Games, PMs, Players.

The game section would hold info on the game (name, running dates, links to websites, links to the forum or category on UF, description, major characters & events, the design team, etc)

The PM section would include the basic by default (name, known games they worked on) and then if the PM registered would include more information that they chose to share (favorite moments behind the curtain type stuff)

The Player section would would allow players to register and say what games they played and give them the control over what other information they wanted to share (contact information) and who they wanted to share it with (anyone, other players that played games they did, other players marked as friends, players marked as trusted contacts, registered puppetmasters they mark as ok). It also lets them link to games and they can fill out information such as favorite moments (which are, in turn, randomly put on the game page - perhaps 3 and then a read more).

I'm comfortable enough with PHP that I could build the basics where people can add the information about the games and such to the database. The user permissions and such are a completely different story. A database filled with personal information is not something that I trust myself to create securely and if I don't trust myself, I can't ask others to trust me Smile

Because this is the PM Guide forum, I'll throw out examples of how it could be used by PMs in order to keep it somewhat on topic before getting back to the topic of the thread...

Say you're a PM of a smaller game and you want to hide a cache somewhere but you don't know where. Your game is small so you can't just throw it out there and know that it will be found by next Tuesday when the information will be needed. Using google maps, you could create a map of all the players of your game by zip code. But, perhaps you're interested in getting additional players - create a map of all the players that have played games similar to yours and see where they're located.

Perhaps you're a wannabe PM of a smaller localized game - with live events throughout Minneapolis, for example. You have a friend or two working with you but you need a bit of help. You could search for players in your area and contact them to see if they're willing to participate as actors.

Maybe you're struggling for ideas on new character. You can do a search of all the notes & memories that are tagged as being about a character and see what people really related to and why.

Perhaps you want to do a really cool launch by contacting people via AIM Rolling Eyes So, you do a search of players who have granted you access to their AIM information.

Ok, enough on that, there are loads of possibilities. But, tis all just a dream at this point. So, um, excuse my threadjacking and get back on topic.

How Odd

Just so the starving artists can get their creations off the ground in order to learn how this genre works in the hopes that they will be able to make this genre better and larger then it is now, here is my information:

For a possible place to create a website, http://www.ning.com is worth checking out.

See http://www.freepsychicreadings.ning.com for a very basic example of what a Ning can do... it's fully customizable (for example, you can sort members into players and PMs, possibly.) Each Ning Group comes with a forum, so we can set one up for posting contact information and another for prospective PMs looking for games to help make, and PMs who need a launch database or PMs who need others for their team, can come to this website and find people.

I think this would be very easy to set up. Someone should just get familiar with the code Ning uses (not too sure off the top of my head what computer language it is) and set up a Ning Group for uFers.

I'd do it myself, but I'm a bit busy at the moment...

I love this idea imbri. More than once I have wished for a complete ARG database with cross referencing. Adding player social networking to that is a great idea and would add a ton more info to the system.

I assume you're thinking it would be similar to imdb in that the games database would be managed by administrators, but then the player profiles would be mySpace-ish. PM profiles would just be player profiles with some extra information and credits...

I would be very interested in discussing this more with you, imbri, if you're still interested in working on the project. I have a good amount of experience with PHP/MySQL and what I would quantify as "some" free time.
