ILOVEBEES @ U.C. Berkeley! http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2005/03/01_ilovebees.shtml
I think the many, many mistakes in that article sum it all up.
AI from 2050 contacts us, blah blah blah... Typical overactionist last sentence...
Additionally, anyone got any pictures of the sculpture(s) that we carved, apparently? I wonder where they got all their info from, or if they're just overexaggerating every aspect of it.
March 8-18! I expect to be seeing pictures from this!

You WILL be getting pictures.
Jane McGonigal is a driving force behind this exhibit. She was also known as Dana in game and was a PM, so she will get it right. The problem is that reporters rarely get it right...

Considering the other post is on page 32 of an axon hunter thread, I think it's worthy of a new thread. One of the other mods can override me if they disagree.

an open mind
Quote:
"We want to develop scholarship about games like this, and learn how games are becoming so important in our culture," said UC Berkeley's Greg Niemeyer, an assistant professor of art practice, film studies and new media
This sounds like he wants to understand games like ilovebees, but
the following quote shows that he has already made up his mind about these games being "dangerous."
Quote:
"I think it's dangerous to blend games with serious pursuits and reality," said Niemeyer. "It's like mixing religion and politics."
How can a person with this attitude expect to be taken seriously as a scholar? Should we waste our time trying to educate him?
----
I know that people who do get a chance to attend this exhibit will post pictures for us. Wonder if the fireflies wiki or thebruce's creeepy made it into the show?

I think we can leave that safely in the hands of Jane... if she needs another 2x4 to drive the point home, though, I do hope she feels free to ask us!

Only time will tell. And the pictures and transcripts.

I think Ariock and I have this totally covered. I will fill my 256MB Compact Flash card full of quality pictures from this event, so I don't think there will be a shortage of pics. I also plan to go on Saturday.

And I will be filling mine with the banal and blurry pictures. More choice for you, the consumer! And maybe all in a torrent, if we can figure it all out....
I am 94% nerd, so it shouldn't be a problem.

As with any ARG-related file, if you need hosting where bandwidth isn't a problem, let me know. I'm happy to host stuff at ARGN.

10 million gamesters?
first whats a gamester?
second, as I recall there were about 500,000 unique visitors to ILB.com per week. averaging 500,000 active or inactive but interested participants
How they got 10 million I haven't the slightest.

Probably the same way they figured out Mel was from 2050.

This is such an example of lazy reporting. I don't know where he got his information from, but it looks like the only guy he actually interviewed was a guy who doesn't know anything about these games. Why not talk to Ms. McG or the other people from 42 Ent.?
Yarr. DOTR is not pleased.

That sculpture lives in my house now.
MacDuff gave it to me when I met up with Team Chowdah in Boston and I took it home on the plane. Imagine trying to take that on a plane and trying to explain it to people. I finally just said I was an art teacher.
I am hoping to get that sculpture to the exhibit because it is really spectacular.
