I've emailed the "news@perplexcitysentinel.com" address because it told me to if I found any errors. I reported the January 15th/16th issue.

And now the "reprints@perplexcitysentinel.com" address to inquire whether reprints went back to the finding of the cube.

I've sent one email to reprints and one to classifieds. Here's the reply I got for reprints:

Quote:
Thank you for your interest in reprints from the Perplex City Sentinel!

Unfortunately, the Sentinel has a strict policy disallowing the purchase of
reprints from foreign entities. We apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause you.

Best wishes,
The Sentinel Staff

Alison,

That reply is already posted here.

Please post anything having to do with the new sentinel e-mail addresses, or replies from them in that thread.

Thanks!

One thing I noticed about today's update to the Sentinel is that every time I reloaded the home page in FireFox (Macintosh) the Sente pic would appear and then it seemed like another one appeared on top of it.

So I saved the entire page to my hard drive (FireFox's "Save Page As..." option). It saved all HTML and images as usual, except the Sente image that it downloaded is senteoped-wide-230.jfif. Did anyone else get a .jfif file for Sente's image (as opposed to the .jpg one we've been stegging)?

Anyway, I couldn't open it in Photoshop and hex dumping it in BBEdit gave me a headache (too many lines for my pretty little head). And I can't figure out how the heck to install and run stegdetect if my life depended on it (where's a drag-n-drop app when ya need it?!).

Also, the page completely lost its formatting -- no table structure or anything. Could be a css thing, but doesn't seem like it. Anyone want to give the above .jfif a shot?

And I can't figure out how the heck to install and run stegdetect if my life depended on it (where's a drag-n-drop app when ya need it?!). Anyone want to try and see if this .jfif file means anything?

Also, the page completely lost its formatting -- no tables or anything. Could be a css thing, but doesn't seem like it.

i just tried saving the page through firefox, but the image is a jpg. 'jfif' is a standard format for jpegs by the way, although if they did have the file with that extension up (which doesn't exist now), i would like to know why...it was probably nothing though...

on a side not, does anyone get the impression that it seems as though these updates are made at the very last minute...all these inconsistencies make it look as if the coders were rushing to get it done...

--edit--
those two files, the jpg and jfif have exactly the same file size...so it was probably nothing...

secondly, the javascript gets saved to the hard drive and the url gets changed to accomodate the fact that now it is stored locally under whatever file name you give the page, but the css doesn't get saved and the relative url is preserved the way it is online...

Actually its very common in the UK to use the word "call" to mean contact, so it not necessarliy means telephone

I've never heard it used in a context other than telephone, and I live here :p When I was younger though, we used to refer to visiting people as 'calling on them'. But that was very much a kid thing.

Tangent: Does anyone know the current date at Perplex City?

On the PCS website, the date corresponds with our 'Earth date', however, in the Cube Stolen in Deadly Raid article, it refers to a presumably different style of dating, using using 228 and 235, but keeping our months. Perhaps they use two sets of dates, one relating to the cube, and then one the same as ours?

Anyway, my point is.. if we can find out what the date is 'After Cube' in PC right now, we can find out when the cube was first discovered, and when the first attempted theft took place, and we can see if they correspond with anything significant in our 'Earth years'. Unless someone already did that?

Edit: The top paragraphs should actually be in another topic :p Oh well

Oh oh.. I had that same thought, by the by. But the dates aren't wrong.... the article on Jan. 16th 2004 states that the Cube was stolen "last night", which would have put the theft on the 15th. So the anniversary article thing being published on the 15th would be accurate.

This was already mentioned by Ayanami Rei in this post in the update thread.

If anyone else has any comments regarding the 24th March update of Perplex City Sentinel, please post them in the update thread and not here. It is what the thread is there for. Very Happy

PCBC IS AN RSA ENCRIPTION ALGORITHM!!!!

I found this and I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet. This could be a major clue:

Propagating Cipher Block Chaining (PCBC):

P[n] and C[n] are each 64-bits long.

Encryption: Decryption:
C[0] = E(P[0]^IV) P[0] = D(C[0])^IV
(n>0) C[n] = E(P[n]^P[n-1]^C[n-1]) P[n] = D(C[n])^P[n-1]^C[n-1]

I'm not a math encryption guy, so I don't really know what this all means.
Here's where I found this info:
http://www.cs.uu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/cryptography-faq/part05.html

Is this a good find or just another trout?

[edit]
Some symbols:

P[n] The n'th block of plaintext, input to encryption, output from
decryption. Size of block determined by the mode.

C[n] The n'th block of ciphertext, output from encryption, input to
decryption. Size of block determined by the mode.

E(m) The DES encryption function, performed on 64-bit block m, using
the 16-key schedule derived from some 56-bit key.

D(m) The DES decryption function, performed on 64-bit block m, using
the same key schedule as in E(m), except that the 16 keys
in the schedule are used in the opposite order as in E(m).

IV A 64-bit ``initialization vector'', a secret value which, along with
the key, is shared by both encryptor and decryptor.

Well, doing a really quick search on "Propagating Cipher Block Chaining" netted me this post back on page 19, so it's at been mentioned at least once.

Depends. It's really only good if there's something to decrypt, which there doesn't seem to be.
