I don't think we should ignore the fact that Hon has a background in Biochemistry...maybe he's indulged himself?

no chance man,

A if it was real there'd be a link to it

B if it was real it's come up on google searches (as a drug, not an ingredient in hand cream or a turkish current)

C it's not really ideal marketing for a drug co to advertise in a fictional newspaper..

Think about it though. If Ceretin is a new company coming out, marketing cognitive enhancers, wouldn't the ARG community be their target demographic? If they are a brand new company, there might not be anything on the web about them until the launch, around the end of the game. By that time, we will have seen the ad soooooo many times that actually getting the product advertised would be almost instictual. Look at how many people went nuts trying to get the lanyards and cds from ILB. If this is an actual product that does enhance your cognitive 'muscles' wouldn't it be perfect for us?

no, i worked for a while in teh pharm industry, still have several friends that do, and im working on my own biochemistry degree to go into the field in more depth. there are NO currently being tested drugs like that. at least, not ones that have filed intent and structure with the fda. trust me, idve heard by now.
(there is an interesting pill form nail and hair strengthener though, causes the keratin to be made slightly differently, for people with thin hair/ weak nails. but i think itll never get to live testing. )

Agreed. There are no drugs known (on the market or in testing) that significantly enhance cognitive function.

Of course there is. It's cheap, freely available in supermarkets and in specialist dealer-ships and is socially acceptable.

Coffee!

*Waves* Hello all. Razz

But I have to say, the fact the picture doesn't link to anything kind of kills the arguement. For me, at least. What kind of product wishing to promote itself doesn't provide a link to more information and how to purchase it?

If Ceretin were an allegory for coffee it wouldn't surprise me - I feel like everything reported in the Sentinel is eerily familiar to me, perhaps not in its specifics, but I get this feeling that Perplex City is sorta like our world, but not quite, a sorta surrealist/fabulist interpretation of our world. Anyway, sorry if this is way too in the clouds, I just mean that, from a literary perspective, the lore and storyline so far seems to mirror our world in the same tradition as such dystopic novels as Brave New World, 1984, Handmaiden's Tale, etc. It will probably have no relevance to the actual game, but I just wanted to point out how much I'm enjoying it, not just the good characters and burgeoning lore we are getting, but the informed and clever way with which they are making some social commentary as well. Wink

I almost mentioned coffee (i.e. caffeine) in my original post, anticipating this response. Caffeine has been shown to increase concentration for short periods of time (before decreasing concentration), but has no discernable affect on level of intelligence.

OTOH, I wouldn't pass up a cup to get me 'started' in the morning. Like NOW! Coffee

I just wanted to note that a couple of the Turkish pages mentioning "Ceretin" on google are actually referring to the pollen supplement Cernitin. (Cernitin is not a cognitive 'enhancer', but is used for prostate health, as an aphrodisiac, an antioxidant, etc etc etc.)

Well, it says in the audio to the video (the one detailing places and times the newspaper extracts, postcards etc could be found) something like PC is like our world if it had learnt different lessons from similar events. Of course, our world didn't discover the Cube 250 odd years ago. So it makes sense that there should be allegories for most things we have.

I'm reminded of His Dark Materials, where they use a kind of oil-based power to do what we'd do with electricity. Nevermind, just me going off of one Razz

Agreed on the His Dark Materials bit... The question is when did our alternate realities diverge, was it, perhaps, when the cube was discovered... Does that mean that we missed out on discovering the cube ourselves 250 years ago? Furthermore, does that mean that our own reality's version of the cube exists in our reality along with PC's cube?

This is all, of course, total speculation, based on the assumption that PC is a parallel universe of our own which split off relatively recently - explaining the similarities and the "counterparts" that members of the academy appear to have on earth...

It would make sense if the discovery of the Cube was the defining point, where our two universes split (I'm running with this idea). 250-300 years with a lot of the same events wouldn't create that many differences, that's why PC's so similar.

If there's a Cube somewhere here, too. Originally from Earth, I mean, it could cause some confusion and trouble if it were to be found... just an idea.
