Whoa guys whoa:

In the "Kiteway Unfit for Office Article", the author writes: "We have lost an important link to our ancestors". This seems to indicate the use or a use of the cube (there may be multiple uses). I see two main possibilities (though undoubtedly there are more)...
1) The cube allows one to travel back in time.
2) The cube allows one to see back in time.

Or maybe the cube holds the collected intelligence of their deceased ancestors (a common SF theme). That could then account for the religious overtones...

The general story line reminds me of the plot in "Silverheart" where the civilisation relys on some ruby which drives all their power source and then it gets stolen or something...(I can't rememeber how it is exactly, read it a couple of years back).
Everything's gone all sci-fi so I feel I must advocate some appliance of the rational.
We've lost an important link to our ancestors; some-one nicks the mask of Tutankamun; the last Hillman Imp is left burntout on bricks on the hard-shoulder of the M25; they closed the old-fashinoed sweet shop that used to be by the market in Plymouth; figure of speech rather than indication of an intelligence-containing, time-travelling power-source.
The key thing with PPC and its denizens is their similarity and the similarity of their society, look at Scarlett and her blog, Lyssa and the shoes, the tone of the paper, drugs in athletics etc etc. I think the key will be a lot more mundane...different, but not futuristic.

Yeah, I have a tendency to go all scifi in everyday life, too. But I think its the PMs that started doing it first! I mean, a mysterious missing cube, communications with another world, cute 19-year old bloggers (as opposed to web cam operators)... all very science fictiony to my mind. Or actually... its got more of an Indiana Jones feel, doesn't it?

A lot of people keep speccing that The Cube could be some kind of idea or group of people of "intangible object", let's just remember that pretty much first ever clue - in the Firebox mag - said it was made of metal.
It's definitely an actual cube.

The Firebox ad didn't say the Cube was made of metal - it said the Cube was metallic in appearance . As far as how "tangible" it is - it has "inderminate" mass... whatever that means

inditerminate mass means its constanlty a different mass. meaning its likely an extradimensional object.

Could be. But it could also be that it has fluctuating density (and perfectly defined volume), which would also render its mass indeterminate. I think there are several other possibilities, too.

But it does have mass.
EDIT - deleted duplicate post - SG

well, since density is defined as the proportion between mass and volume, yeah, a changing mass would mean a changing density...
(wtf man?)

That's assuming the volume remains constant; it's possible (though I admit pretty unlikely) that the Cube's mass and volume fluctuate together, in a pulsating kinda way...

my specs on what the cube might be are in other threads so ill leave that cept to say that indeterminate mass just means that either they havent the means to weigh it (unlikely) or its mass changes
the latter would have to infer a strange interdimensional mass transfer thingy
my case rests -- hahaha

A changing mass requires matter appearing and disappearing inside it, going nowhere. Impossible. Unless the cube is some kind of tiny particle accelerator.
