I'm not sure I want teams, but I would love to be able to easily check if people had tried something. People post when they have got something, and I know that a lot of people discuss things on IRC, but if you don't happen to be on IRC, or don't have access, oftentimes you have no way of knowing that something has been tried, and not worked.

This just means that you can end up spending loads of time checking out something that doesn't work all over again. For example, on Sentinel, which images have been looked at, does that include all the ads, what has been done, has someone destegged, has someone played with the colours eg two different whites in the bank ads?

I'm not sure how, especially if it is going to be easy to reference?

The trouble is, people try things in so many different places (the forums, IRC, in private IM conversations, on their own without telling anyone) that it's hard to keep up with them all.

I have contemplated before the idea of a website that would catalogue puzzles from ARGs and report on possible solutions, things which didn't work, and eventually the final solves. But such a website would require people monitoring every possible (public) method of communication, or be somehow tracking it automatically, making the task almost impossible.

Or we could work as a collective on it all. The essence of an ARG is after all working as a collaborative whole (300 brains are better than one). Some people may be better at certain areas than other, some may be able to help in lots of areas, so there's no point trying to divide into teams.

Everyone can just play together, and solve things as they come along, there's no need to specialise.

Binging it!

first of all, if you dont have access to IRC or feel you are missing something, you *could* always go through the logs, which i believe have some swishy search function. but to be fair, most ppl try things and then post in the relevant thread on the forums whether its worked or not. which also happen to be searchable. and sometimes theories will get posted on the wiki (which afaik anyone can edit and contribute to) and the results will be posted also. again, the wiki is searchable. the trouble is people dont tend to bother reading these things anyway and post things that have already been posted and ask questions that have already been answered, but i dont think its cos of a lack of information.

EDIT: well, the forums have all chanegd and organised themselves so that might help, this post here might be useful to look at too :)

and i'm with the 'no' camp on the teams idea, as much as i dont have a specialism myself, im sue there are other ppl who are quite good at lots of things, and *everyone* would get bored if they were only allowed to do one thing throughout the entire ARG. plus, sometimes you need a bit of thinking outside the box, what if the solution was something we didnt have a team for? semi-organised chaos, while inefficient, seems a lot more fun to me :)

rach =)

This wasn't actually what the discussion was about. I wasn't saying that it was impossible to find information, just that for puzzles it would be good to have a quick catalogue of what has/hasn't been solved, and what things have been tried to solve them. Like I said, I have considered this idea while playing previous games and nothing ever came of it, I expect the same to happen this time.

and *my* point was that we do have a catalogue. we now have the puzzles section, and the quick reference section, and all the old threads (i assume) are still searchable as to whats been done up til now. you can edit and add to the wiki if you'd like to catalogue some more on there. i just really dont see why we need somewhere else to look at as well...

rach =)

From previous experience, wikis are severely lacking when it comes to puzzles, simply because of the realtime nature of people trying to solve them, so usually a wiki is not updated with anything but the final solve.

As for the puzzle section of the forums, all you have to do is look at the Postcard thread or the ILB puzzle forum to see what that will become. You end up with threads so long that people don't bother to read or search them and just post at the end, causing the thread to become even longer, and it all turns into one big recurring nightmare.

But no matter what systems you put in place, or what rules you set, there'll always be someone who can't wait to post their new findings (which others have known for months) and makes a new thread or extends a huge thread anyway. So really, there's not much point to any of this, since we know that people won't use it as intended.
