Okay, here's the essentials on the WWU.

We're releasing a total of nine new multiplayer maps.
All nine maps will eventually be available as Live downloads and as a normal boxed game disc - available at retail for $19.99 (US).
The release on Live will be staggered, some paid, some free!
The first two maps are free and coming in a few short weeks. (late April)
The same day the 2 free maps are released, 2 additional maps will be available for purchase.
The remaining 5 maps will be made available as a paid download on the same day the retail package goes on sale.
The retail disc will contain extras, including a documentary, a cool project from our cinematic and animation team, every Halo 2 update released so far and possily one or two other little treats.
By late summer, ALL the maps will be available for free.
The first two free maps are "Containment", a wintery level set near the Sentinel Wall (think Sidewinder from Halo), and Warlock, a Halo 2 version of Wizard. Pictures are available over on bungie.net.
The first two paid maps are Turf, set in the streets of Old Mombasa, and Sanctuary, a "perfectly symmetrical" map in a Forerunner habitat with aqueducts. Again, pictures are available over on bungie.net.
It's quite an informative update... even the Q&As are actually useful for a change.
Oh, and there's an official press release on xbox.com.
-- Steve's definitely buying the disc; he's just wondering if he can keep from buying the maps on download beforehand.
Edit : looks like the press release URL is busted at the moment. Will re-edit when it's back up.
Edit 2 : the press release is back.

Ooooh.
*Dave fights his revulsion at M$ charging, and also wonders if he can avoid paying to download the maps AND for the retail disc. Then he rolls around in the new maps like Scrooge McDuck in his money pit.

xbl dlc the new maps look so sweet. containment and turf are goin to be my favorits i can tell. You have to unlock the telaporters in containment.... sound like something i said about 5 or 6 days ago fugitive? I;m gunna dl the free ones i can then get the disk cuz of the extra content idk about all of you but i sugest you do the same its only $20 ( my boyscout/coulrophobia[clown phobia] research is gunna suffer a but but o'well). i cant w8 to map out turf in my head and get the allys down right. if you ever see me in a custem game in that lvl you know what im will be doing.

As psyched as I am about this news, I'm dreading trying to get a game going on the new premium maps. Odds are there will almost always be someone in the party who hasn't bought them. And that's fine for them, I'm not criticizing anybody who doesn't buy them, but its going to be hell on organizing custom games for a while.

Just go ahead and assume that the for-pay maps are not available. Simple. For that matter, unless you know that you are going to be playing with other people who have bought the maps, just don't bother to buy them. They'll all be free by the end of the summer anyway. That's my plan, anyway.

but I'm so impatient...
Seriously, I would love to be able to wait until the end of summer, but I'm not sure I'll be able to hold out. On the other hand if nobody else is getting them, I guess there indeed isn't much point in buying the maps myself early.

If you don't think my new favorite map won't be the sentinel wall one, you'd be way off the mark.

What are the other 5 maps going to be?
Terminal, Relic, Elongation, Gemini and Backwash.
It'll be nice to have my own map.

We don't know any of the particulars yet. XBL might get the maps eariler and then the DVD might come out on May 24th or so for everyone who doesn't have XBL.
Of course on the other hand, I might throw on a kilt, put on a pair of Ronald MacDonald shoes, dye my hair pink, run around a church screaming "the sky is falling" in russian while holding a poodle under one arm and a two-foot salami under the other. But, I digress...
Bungie is going to announce something on this this week according to Frankie so, lets wait a few days and see what Bungie has to say.
HA!
I was right...(for once)

The surrounding streets and evacuated buildings of Old Mombasa make it a dangerous warren, with potential assassins lurking in every shadow and around every corner. Dusty storefronts hide mazelike interiors, and narrow walkways above street level make this shadowy part of town a sniper's haven.
Old Mombasa! Old Mombas! Ill meet all Beekepers on the roof where the weapon chache is!
