[SPEC] Perplexcity Life

There will, i suspect, be many threads to open up very soon.

The fFirst thing i noticed was, when i went to get a subscription on the page, the rate is PCL70 or PCL2,350. What do you suppose the PCL is? Perplex City L???? Lyra?

From the PCBC banner ad "Where your Lecks work smarter." I'm thinking that PCL is Perplex City Lecks.

hm, that would make a weekly subscription of 70 PCL = something like 50 cents. which means the cover price of one issue is less than 10 cents.

seems pretty cheap. Could be, tho, eh.

I'm wondering what sport Nuru was ejected fFrom. It doesnt specifiy, of course (or else i wouldnt be asking). There is a strong tendency in perplexcity, i am seeing, to value smartness. (A whole section of the newspaper is dedicated to "puzzles" in all their fForms!) So what Sport would a perplexian value?

It's not a question which we can answer rightly, at this time. But it deserves to be asked.

Obviously games of mental dexterity, something similar to chess perhaps. (or Crystal Maze, Krypton Factor, anyone?) They obviously hold these games in high regard, and events attract major public interest. If a sport is to be watched by millions then something very visual would work well. These puzzle-sports must attract the same level of interest as earth and its incessant fanscination with football, baseball, etc.

What other game would a world of Cube-worshipping intellectuals play?

Tetris!

For some reason, the term Smart Alecks popped into my head when I read that. I just figured it had something to do with that.

Also, as for the PCAG. There was an episode of "Sliders" where the owrld they visited was far more intellectual. They had a wierd athletic/intellectual game. Here's a plot synopsis

I actually had the same thought pop into my head when I read the following quote from PPCS

Quote:
As the Cube's absence grows longer, the possibility that it is permanently gone looms larger and larger. We have lost an important link to our ancestors, and we are all the poorer for it. What happens if it is never recovered, thanks to Sente's dreadful management? Will children still build with blocks in the future? Will the Cubists survive into another generation?

Is this some sort of obscure reference to kids playing video games of Tetris? In which case the theory of this being Nintendo sponsored certainly rears it's ugly head again. All hail the new Game Cube! Laughing

surely lego pops in to mind more appropriately??

the idea i got from that quote was, first of all lego, but second, maybe the cube is something of a concept, like discovering the wheel or something, the cube taught them the concept of a cube and how you can build with it and stuff... but thats a bit far fetched just from one little (probably sentimental) quote.

rach =)

Yup, it seems Lecks are the standard currency. I'm pretty sure they came up with that one from PerpLECKS City.

Any Spec on the bank name (PCBC)? Perplex City Bank Commerce? I did a manual search for it and came up with the Pembrook College Boat Club, of Oxford, England (http://www.pembrokerowing.com/index.php). Though I'm sure it's OOG, it was fun to try and connect (British Academy, students, etc.)

Yeah, I thought about a wheel type event for The Cube too, but i'm sure they would've been building with blocks before The Cube was discovered, as they had houses and cellars and things, according to the history we've had so far.

About the Lego thing. This is a good idea that I hadn't realised, however with The Cube being so technologically advanced, i'm thinking that maybe Lego would be a bit old hat for these guys.

Either way, it's definitely worth keeping both toys in mind.

N.B. I did have another point to make as well, but I lost my train of thought mid sentence, so I might come back and update later if I remember what it was. My brain is spinning with info overload at the mo!

maxim's posted about it here. It's based on a commonly found UK bank.

I could be wrong, but i dont think it's exactly a UK bank. We have them here in new york, and in fFact they are a global banking organization (one of the tellers related a tale to me of her son who was in the armed fForces in taiwan and had access to his account both at home an abroad) I could be wrong, But I think HSBC stands fFor Hong Kong / Singapore Banking Company. It's hard to tell what it actually means tho, because anytime i ask an employee at the bank they give a very elusive answer. I dont think anyone there knows, really. The commonly held belief is the bank is of some asiatic origin, but i have no imperical datato uphold it.

about the lecks. its written in subscription info as PCL. Perplex City Lecks. you only do that when there are other versions. for example, you dont write $. you write $ (us) or USD, or $(cdn) , ect. so there are OTHER city states with lecks. also, they like puzzles, right? how cool would it be if there was a site that opened up that was nothing but puzzles, like pogo or yahoo games type thing, where people bid and played with money. get sente to spot us all a little on our soon to be given keys, and let us learn by interaction. have open game rooms with perpex city people, learn about the society a bit that way, and maybe earn some cash that could be used in online perplex city sites for stuff that might help. you could build a whole secondary economy.
