[UPDATE] Scarlett's Story - 24 Mar 06 - Favour For You

Quote:
'm sorry to have been trickling this story through to you over several weeks - as you know, I have extremely limited key access here, mostly only a few minutes a day. I suppose it's been helpful in one way, though. Some of you have emailed me to tell me that you think you know what Claire's crime was, that she was working with this "V" to steal the Cube. The truth is, I've suspected this myself. She hasn't said anything, and I don't want to push her, but I can't think of another crime that's been committed in the city in the past four or five years that would mean she felt she couldn't go to the authorities, even if her life was in danger. A couple of things she's dropped into conversation have also led me to that suspicion.

But I can't ask her directly. Over the past few weeks I've come to understand how precarious my position is here; I came out here hoping to reunite a son with his mother, and I've done that, and I'm proud. But now I want to go home and I think if Claire felt I threatened her, and Allain in any way she wouldn't let me do that. I don't think she's violent, not that. But it'd be easy enough to cripple our car, or my key. And it's not like there's a bus home.

So, I'm planning to be here for another few days. If you can think of one or two questions I could ask without arousing suspicion, I'll be glad to ask it. But remember that my key access is very limited - if you send dozens of emails I won't be able to get them all in time. It seems like many of you talk to each other, so if you could perhaps discuss it and then send me one email before next Friday, that would be best.

In any case, I should finish up telling Claire's story. There's not much further to go and much of it has come out in conversation over the past few weeks, while we've all been living and working together here in Anjsbourg. Claire and Allain have discussed whether he could go home too, when I do, but Claire says that would be too dangerous.

"I'm afraid," she said, one evening at the end of a long dig, "that V would find you. He'd try to use you to get to me. He might... he has no scruples. I'm sorry." She looked over at Allain, who was stretched out on his cot in the tent. "Maybe we could make you a new identity? Maybe Scarlett could help with that?"
Allain sat up, looked at me, grinned, and shook his head.
"Not yet," he said, "I'm tired of running for now. Besides, we've got work to do here, right?"

And it's true, they do have work to do here. Claire knows she can't stop what's happening at Viendenbourg by herself. But there's an old family legend - that the full story of what happened during the war has never been told - that something was lost, something very valuable, something precious. That part of the secret lies buried under the ruins of Anjsbourg. It might take years but she is going to stay here to try to find it and, for now, Allain is staying too.

Can you say "season 2 setup"? Heh.

So I guess we don't find out much more on this tangent for a while. That and we get 1 shot at asking Claire the right question before she's essentially cut off from us.

Nothing like a little pressure Smile

Maybe we can ask her to draw a sketch of V (since she's certainly met him) just so Scarlett can be sure to "stay out of his way"...

Nah, that's not really enough info to help is it. Drawing a blank.

So what do we need to know and what could Claire conceivably tell us? I reckon the following at least (see GuyP's Unsolved Mysteries page on the Wiki for more details):

Who is V?
Claire's description 'he's a shadow, he's a figment' suggests she doesn't Know his real identity but maybe we can get some more clues from her. How did he recruit her in the first place? Did she know him before the theft? As whom did he present himself to her (as Cyrus Quinton?)? And how did he contact her as the plan progressed - could there be more leaked emails we could access?

Who else is involved in the conspiracy?
The leaked emails implicate an Adjunct Senior Fellow and imply that someone even more senior at the Academy was involved. Did Claire ever hear of or have contact with anyone other than V, Bernardo Holyoke and Monica Grand?

Why steal the Cube in the first place?
We still haven't found a clear motive for the Third Power to steal the cube (assuming they did steal it). Helena Frye claimed V was frightening because 'he believes in something. He believes so much that he'd do anything in its service, and that makes him more dangerous, because he's willing to sacrifice anything.' So as a fervent believer did he ever give Claire any indication of a purpose behind the crime?

Finally, what happened to the Cube?
Monica Grand's dying words, 'we never held it. It was already gone,' could indicate that the thieves failed in their mission. Had the Cube already been taken? If so, what was V's reaction? Maybe we can get Claire to shed a little more light on this.

That's all I can think of for now. I guess we need to nominate someone to email as well (Preferably someone with a bit of tact, who won't try pimping her sister or subtly implying bomb threats Wink ).

I'm gonna try my best not to rant here, but I was just wondering why this topic isn't getting more attention. I'm missing something here, right? I read this as "Puzzle, puzzle, puzzle, UnFiction collaborative puzzle, puzzle, puzzle." Shouldn't this be this huge topic with 57 posts by now? Maybe Ollie needs to teach me how to use the search function, cause I'm just not finding the puzzle thread where everybody is working together on crafting the perfect e-mail response.

Maybe you are all talking about it in the chat thinger...

I think echinda hit it on the head we should ask about who V is and how the Cube was stolen. I'm sure the reason we haven't received a lot of posts on this one is maybe the time difference.(I hope)

Gotcha, I suppose you are right. Besides it is a Friday and I'm sure there are some other things going on. I wish I could be of more help, but UKver2.0 is a three man team and I've been leaving this area for one of the other guys. It sparked my interests though so now I gotta go catch up.

I agree with Echidna. Though I 'feel' the most important question we need to ask is how the cube was stolen. Scarletts not going to give us all the information we 'could' get from Claire were she one of the more contactable people (can i second whomever said 'Blergh, scripted nonsense' in another thread?)

As mentioned Kurt speculated that it would require two academy insiders to circumvent the 3 alarm systems so perfectly. Does she know who these people were? Could she a least provide an explantion that would narrow the field to one insider? (maybe her software was just THAT good?) Although chances are she'll say, "i know one insider was Fran Mendling" and that will help us F.A. there's always the chance she'll say, "well, there was one we knew as M.K." Very Happy

I touched upon this in the last Scarlett update thread but myabe the cube is the catalyst to whatever WMD destroyed Anjsbourg, is that why its been stolen? The Military are still mining whatever at Viendenbourg, was the cube stolen to prevent a WMD being used? Does she know the reason to cube was stolen? (Is it my idea?!!)

I fear the answer will be "no, i was hired to circumvent security, i only took the job to pay for my research, not knowing what it was"

Although I dont think asking about the Monica Grand 'we never held' quote is critical. We know it ended up on Earth, and in post heist evidence V seems to consider the effort a complete success, possible sucking up to a superior, more likely, that was the plan, V knows it, the others didnt. Really, for making that suggestion I must turn my back on you...

...

...

Let that be a lesson to you Wink

And UKver2.0, It seems Scarletts emails never seem to get the same response as other puzzles. Secret Military research bases, Sente involved, Ancient weapons being redeveloped. This stuff is fried gold! But go figure?

EDIT: Does anyone else have touble getting scarletts emails? I never get them, I've signed up twice now. still nada.

They stopped a while back, I don't think anyone's getting them.

I'd personally like to ask for:

-more details about the discovery and properties of the Cube

-details about the theft itself, the Monica Grand quote, etc. Did the Cube disappear (and was therefore liberated?). Did it suck someone inside it or transport them away (like Hesketh Zeller was, presumably)?

Probably the most important thing, though, will be to find out what happened at Viendenbourg, and whether or not it has something to do with the last page of the Granier diary. But I have no idea how Scarlett could ask that in a subtle way.

edited to add:

It'd probably be a good idea to ask about Reynolds Ionizers and Klebold plates too, since Claire's the one that sent the military trace when Kurt was searching for them, and they also were presumably involved/present in the Cube theft, and in Bernardo Holyoke's death.

I'd say that we should try and get as much information about the cube as possible...that and V. Then again that is what everyone else is saying too.

We are going to have to phrase a question about the cube very carefully. I agree thats probably the best way to go, but get someone to write the email that is going to phrase things VERY carefully.

How about just asking an all encompassing "What happened on the night of the cube theft?"
Or is that to open/blatant?

I think the idea is that C's a little off her rocker and will likely freak out if she's asked that directly. Maybe coming at it from the side - something like, 'So, what were you doing early on two years ago?'

Its quite interesting that although Claire felt enough at risk to leave the city for Viendenbourg, she felt safe enough for a while there. We know that Sente visited Viendenbourg to check everything over, does this rule him out of the 3P, or on the basis there there could not be much communication between Viendenbourg & PPC, rule him further in as there were very few other people who could have carried info out?

A safe"ish" route of asking a question would be on the basis of asking if Scarlett has to worry upon her return - i.e. Is there anyone/anywhere I should be avoiding? This would give us info to move forward, but hopefully not arouse Claire's suspicion that she is being pumped for info.

Frustrating that it doesn't look likely that we're going to get much more from Claire (at least not just yet)...
I am inclined to agree that
