Sony might have to stop selling PS2's?

http://tinyurl.com/5qyda

Interesting, but short article. Probably the most interesting line was the following, though:

The court also ruled that Sony must stop selling its PlayStation game consoles in the U.S., but stayed that decision pending a Sony appeal.

This could hit Sony fairly hard... wonder if it applies to the PS3 as well?

That would depend on if the PS3 uses the same controller as the PS2 and PS1. I would assume that since this case has been on going since 2002 that Sony would have made plans to change the controller scheme for the PS3.

This is really a non-issue. There was an immediate injunction filed to allow Sony to continue to sell PS and PS2 under a cumpulsory licensing agreement. They'll never have to stop selling them; they just need to start paying royalties on the affected components.

I agree. Sony should have just settled with Immersion years ago. Microsoft settled with them in 2003 for a relatively-cheap $23 million.

Wow. I remember thinking that this was a big deal when the suit was filed, but now...oi, this is huge. Thanks for the update.

Eh, not huge. Sony will settle, not as cheaply as Microsoft did, but they will.

Since most of Sony's patent infringement seems to be on a system it might not be selling for much longer, they'll probably get off a lot cheaper than the makers of Blackberry did:

We don't know that. Since Sony loves backwards compatibility, this may affect the PS3 as well. Either Sony will have to pony up more cash or delay the launch and re-engineer the controllers (not gonna happen).

What this WILL do is make them launch the PS3 quickly if they have to pull all PS1's and 2's (since they don't want to miss out on all of that revenue)

Unless Sony leaves force feedback (vibration) out of the controllers and the games, I don't think they can reengineer their way out of this. And whether Sony rushes release of the PS3 or not, Sony still owes Immersion retroactive license fees for using force feedback without paying on the PS1 and on the PS2.

FYI, a scan of the settlement, and the infringed patents.
