 		Password Help
Here is some information about the "requirements" for ares station passwords.

Quote:

In the AIB implementation, passwords must be at least six characters long. Passwords may contain lowercase and uppercase letters and digits, but not symbols.

Avoid anything that could be directly or indirectly associated with you (such as name or date of birth)

A password CAN NOT contain:
1) control characters
2) [ALT]-modified keys
3) function keys
4) punctuation

Our network uses a password checker that will automatically test and reject passwords that it considers vulnerable.


Maybe this information can help us narrow down the possibilities for possible passwords.

 		Not really. This is standard password advice that applies to anyone creating a password, not just Ares Station. If anything, it makes things harder for us, since the passwords won't just be an English word or a date.

Since most people will be trying the "easy" passwords (what they do, what they like, etc.), it would be helpfull to know that trying these would be pointless because the system will not accept those types of passwords.
I thought that knowing that information would allow us to decide which ones are better possibilities then others.

Also, if you have been trying passwords that you believe to be correct, it is also helpfull to know that the system will allow variations of a specific password. For instance, a password with 6 letters could be done several different ways (uppercase, lowercase, with a number added, one or more letters uppercase, one or more letters lowercase, etc.).

Granted, it doesn't make "guessing" the passwords any easier, it does tell us that we need to start looking in a different direction then personal possibilities. Or, and this is just an opinion, maybe we need to start trying to get the passwords by contacting people who might be able to help us with the answers (like our new found friend) instead of trying to force it.

I mean, let's face it, there are a lot of different characters and we only know two of the passwords. That's not a lot of headway, in my opinion.

Maybe the information isn't helpfull to you. However, if we had more passwords I wouldn't have felt the need to make the post in the first place.

 		Fair enough.

Though Max Eaton's password was "aptenodytes" which, though not what anyone would ever call common, is an English word and goes against the password guidelines.

So even if the notice is helpful, it's not consistent.

The first password that we found didn't fit within the guidelines either. As I recall it was that persons' favorite g-ball team (which would be a personal item). However, I feel that the need for this person (who will remain nameless) to give me this information means that the rest of them are probably going to fit the guidelines, or atleast be consistant with them.

For clarification purposes, I did not "make up" these guidelines. They were "given" to me. And as with all other items that we have been "given" I feel that there is a purpose for this. My reasons for that purpose, I believe, have been made clear in this and the prior posts. Each time we have been "given" information it has produced, in me, a sence that we are trying to be "pointed" in the right direction.

For completion purposes, the subject of this information was "373135".

 		well to me 373135 smacks of "l33t-speak", substituting 'e' for 3, 'l' (el) for 1, 't' for 7 and 's' for 5

however, eteies doesn't ring any bells! Rolling Eyes it might help for futher password attempts though

 		I'd tried PSR0329+54 pretty much on the first day we got the recording of the Pulsar. The password advice just meant we had to take the '+' out Very Happy

It reveals a very interesting transmission from Jacob Jones...

 		Hmm - good question. Two possibilities spring to mind. Either he hasn't even listened to it (unlikely), or he believes that Jones is dead - so this can't be anything other than a hoax.

Still you'd think he go straight to Security with it.

 		I guess so - maybe things will pick up a bit. We've certainly needed some prodding to get through some of the puzzles up to now - I think we must have slowed the game up a little...

I just wanted to post and say you were right and I was wrong; there was absolutely a point to the password guidelines, even if it is cheap for the guidelines to only apply when they're needed to apply for the puzzle. A little too convenient.

But, either way, congrats for being astute and thorough.

It wasn't about being right or wrong. Smile

It was about sharing any information that I have been given. Since we might all be getting different information (depending on if we are asking the same people the same questions or not). You never know what will help and what won't.

Maybe my post would have led to nothing, but it led to something. Doesn't make me right and doesn't make you wrong. It just means that we (as a whole) never really know when it comes to information. Unless we are given something like "So and so's password is this." Then you can pretty much know that it's helpfull.
