What about trying to associate the futures with characters in the game?

The way Henrik Tanner treated Sarah Covington in the email from the error logs matches the Eagle future, coming down hard on his group.

The apple thief might be James, Lyssa Ling has been mooning after him, and someone has a crush on the apple thief.

Zeller may be the wave, from his bio: "...unrivaled appetite for research that at times (and ultimately) verged on the lethal." and the suggestion to get more green vegetables.

It seems to line up well in places. I tried anagramming things like "henrik tanner the eagle". Nothing really stood out to me. Perhaps someone smarter than me can make something of it?

MADAME BIANCA'S FUTURE
The Perplex City Sentinel is now the only newspaper or magazine in the city that publishes Futures, a fact that is no doubt connected with its frankly shoddy and unscientific reporting. Exactly how the Sentinel can justify writing this ridiculous mumbo-jumbo is beyond belief! Any newspaper with an 'intelligent opinion' would surely be aware of Avancore's study demonstrating that the predictive power of Futures is no better than chance. He found 40 futures fans and presented half with their 'real' futures and half with fake futures predicting the complete opposite. Both groups claimed their futures were 99% accurate!

As for the notion that the gravity of other planets could affect us here, a trivial calculation shows that the Ascendancy Point exerts far more gravitational influence on us than any planet! Are we to expect the Sentinel to factor the Point in to 'Madame Bianca's' predictions, or will you follow the rest of the rational thinkers of the city and remove Futures from your newspaper?

and thats all i have to say about that Wink

Perhaps the instruction is for us to

Futures

I've been going over both Futures, trying to find a connection. There's a few small things but nothing overall. Here's what I've found right down to the straw-clutching:

Gender: There's various references to male or female for each sign. Some are obvious, others are probable (*):
Eagle - Male
Spider - Female
Archer - Female*
The Half-Filled Jug - Male*
The Hand - Male

The Game: The Eagle (21) notes "it's only a game. The last comment on 28, the quote from Spy Game, mentions a game as well. In Sente's opening letter he states that finding the cub "is not a game". If Sente is behind the Futures, and the ARG in general is meant to be immersive, why say it's a game at all? That breaks the reality of it and so far nothing on the Sentinel (source code or picture stegs) says otherwise.

Piece: The Dice mentions this word both weeks. Important.

Positive: Same word in The Baby (21) and The Dragon (2Cool

Priss/Prim: "Miss Priss" in Spider (21) and "Prim" in Three Balls. No other significant word seems to repeat in others that I can see.

Three Balls: A reference to pawnbrokers? For some reason, the 21 Future makes me think of the ending of the Italian Job. I can't find any other film references. Just thought I'd throw that in as an idea.

The Archer: Although 28's does make me think Grapes (of Wrath?)

The Apple-Thief: Both dates are rhymes. Also, a little OOG but Apple make the Cube computer. Apple/Cube...hmm? Probably not.

The Hand: While the other signs could be linked, this one seems the most obvious. Both speak of doing your own thing, to help open "portals".

And finally, two references to the number three: base and Triangles. Phew!

Mrs White

ok - I admit one reason I have thought there is something in the futures is that Madame Bianca = Mrs. White, one of the characters in the game Clue.

also, why have two issues of this paper without giving us more? If things were behind schedule on the PM side of things, as people have been guessing, why not delay the next update?

I don't want to persuade anyone to waste time on something we are obviously stuck on -- time will tell if we missed things. In the meantime I am swamped for the next two days but Friday evening I hope to go back over the whole thing again. Maybe we will have an update by then.

OK, something different entirely. If I look up the source code for any Sentinel page, it always shows in a box where, if the text is too long, you have to scroll left to right. The About The Sentinel source code, however, doesn't do this. Is there an obvious reason for that?

Not really, all depends on how its wrote, i guess they're using some CMS system, probably bespoke... so it depends on really how the poster adds it to it... all renders the same anyway Smile

Bet big.

Bet big is an anagram of gibbet. Could refer to the Hangman in the Tarot Cards. Now, if I could only find a triangle connection.....

As rose stated somewhere else:

I was also thinking along these lines. I believe the perplexians live in a trinary star system.
Then again I would even call a planet a star. If you look up at the night sky and see Mar's it appears as a star in the night sky. If we were standing on Mar's.. I am willing to bet that Earth would also look like a star from there. So by defining a star as a shining planet etc that is viewed in the night sky.. we could even say that we live in a trinary star system (Earth, Moon, Sun). Nice thought anyways =)

The similarities of culture remind me of something I heard a while back about painting our realities..

"It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look. To affect the quality of the day that is the highest of arts."
~Henry David Thoreau

The Greek thing - our modern day star signs are indeed Ancient Greek/Roman, they're kind of a mixture of the two, because the Romans stole a lot of Greek religion and mythology.

About the Titans, there are also 12 Olympians, what we'd most commonly refer to as the main Greek Gods. Trouble is, they don't coincide with the 12 Future signs very well. It all kinda depends on whether the PMs know their Greek Mythology or not...[/quote]

I am not sure what you're trying to say; but if you're trying to say that Perplexians can't tell a planet from a star, then I can't agree with you. Besides, the Zodiac inherently doesn't include planets - because they move relative to the rest of the "static" star background (that's kind of the point).

Aside from that, I think their sky has to look *exactly* the same as ours. The probability of human (not "humanoid") life developing on another planet in our Universe, and of that planet taking 12 months to orbit its star, AND of that human life developing so similarly to ours that they have a Newton who is also occasioned by the fall of an apple, (not to mention the exact same language as our English, and a few other things) is beyond low - it's practically non-existent. So, yeah, I'm pretty much convinced at this point that they are in a parallel universe - living on Earth, in the Solar system, in the Milky Way, etc.

The different Zodiac is very confusing, though!

OK, that's an idea, they could just have different star signs that they use. Am looking for a constellation with 3 stars in it for the 3 balls now...

The constellations are totally arbitrary patterns (different cultures here saw completely different things in the sky), but that's not really the cause of my confusion. I wonder how the hell they managed to have a different history (as is evidenced by the Zodiac, and the excerpt of a historical archive (or whatever it is) in the e-mail - that one was almost 900 years back), and still produced a Newton and an Avogadro Confused

Remember the tv series 'slider's'? All the Earths were identical.. except there were some slight changes on each different 'Earth'.
