Thanks Yanka..

All folders on the server seem to be empty and have hidden files.. for example, nothing in /images/ even though there is supposed to be content.

The Kramer thing is relatively new. I think it's to keep us from opening the urls in directly in their own window - it forces everything back into the "desktop" of ian-net. Little on the annoying side if you ask me. Smile

Agreed.

I've got a barcode scanner here at work and used it on the barcode on Ian's press pass. It came up as M021230-35, which is different from the M021349-87 show on his card - may be nothing but i thought I'd post it anyway.

I've tried some of the other barcodes in Ian and Nisha's files but they've all been too blurry.

Also, don't know if anyone noticed, but the sig. on the press pass does not match the name "John McGill". There's no way to get those letters out of that sig, even if it is hurried.
Important? Don't know.

Looks like it says "Ian Yarbrough" to me. Doh!

Sort of unrelated to the mailboxes themselves, and probably not very important to the game... but in Ian's "schematics" section, the "gunter phone pda from audi warehouse" schematic couldn't possibly be a PDA. It's littered with vaccum tubes. Smile It looks like maybe an old radio receiver or transmitter (it's probably not an audio amplifier, anyway). I think it's really more a case of them picking schematics that look good (especially the Russian ones; how many russian-labeled schematics do you find?) and not knowing/not caring about how accurate they are than anything intentional.

Also, this is my first ARG. I stumbled upon it in a blog advert when I noticed that a) those games never existed b) they didn't even approach real-looking and c) they would have tanked if they had existed. In any case, it's looking pretty interesting... I'm looking forward to future developments.

ok here's a summary of the german news clipping. More or less (can't say I'm fluent in german so I couldn't translate some things). The article is about the pursuit and arrest of Gunter Branderwine. It talks about how he managed to slip away from the police and into an adjacent apartment building and onto the roof. He tried to steal a car to get away but the police found him and arrested him. As you can see in that one surveilence camera video on ian's site.

I got a slightly more exact translation from a Language Forum

Quote:
Last night, police arrested presumed art thief Gunter Banderwine in the Emden harbour. Police forces have been looking for Banderwine, 38 years old, in relation with a serie of Museum robberies which have taken place in all the UE in late 2003 and beginning 2004.

"We have been told, he might be in the area", head of the local police Helik Kunderson explained. "After a check of his profile, we found out he was staying in the Hotel Vindern under an alias he already used in Italy. After a second check of his identity, we arrested the presumed thief."

But Banderwinde wouldn't surrender that easily. He somehow noticed the presence of the police forcs entering the hotel, escaped through the door to the roof and made his way over the roofs into a nearby building. Police located him as he left the building a few minutes later, and chased him to a car warehouse in the harbour area.

"He run as if his life was on the line", secuity agent Andi Goldamnn told. "I assume this is true. He hit me in the face and locked himself in our warehouse. As I recovered, policemen were all over the place. They caught him as he tried to escape with one of the new cars."

Banderwinde is accused of several offences and is retained in Emden.

Now the whole warehouse scene makes sense to me (I must have just skimmed punky's original post cuz I didn't make the connection). Although why Ian would track down the security video of the Emden warehouse still doesn't make a whole lot of sense - unless he was either working with Gunter or just wanted to see him getting taken down.

Timeline of Ian's LRR files:

3/13: Bluetooth Schematic diagram gets posted in "Schematics".

3/15: NCI Newsclip of Gunter arrives in Ian's "inbox"
Note: the Newsclip is officially dated 3/12, but NCI only emails Ian once a month.

3/15: NCI Newsclip gets saved to "News Article" folder

3/15: Emden warehouse video appears in "Movies" & "Personal Stuff"
Wow. That was a very fast hacking job to get the movie on the same day.

3/16: bunch of apparently unrelated "moody" pics get posted to "Personal Stuff" and "photos"

3/17: A LOT of stills from the emdem video appear in "Personal Stuff,"
This includes one titled "Gunter throws PDA". this would be the logical point at which Ian surmised Gunter hid something via bluetooth in the cars.

3/20: Emdem map posted to "Personal Stuff" and "maps"

3/22: Emdem Audi pre-shipping logistics with circled cars in "Personal Stuff"

3/22: Schematic of Gunter's phone PDA appears in "Schematics"

3/24: a bunch of Audi car specs in "Personal Stuff"

3/26: Earthcross shipping route for first Audi to NY in "Personal Stuff"

3/27: Ian makes a fake press pass for NYIAS

The rest is history.

So, umm, ... my point?
Why was Ian looking at bluetooth specs before he heard about Gunter getting caught?
