[UPDATE] He's Dead Jim

The results of the autopsy are in - and mighty interesting they are too. Max was stabbed with a homemade knife

Maybe someone cut a knife out of a plastic container

Didn't Chester cut himself on some jagged plastic? Very suspicious.

Also, Hanna asks for help on another matter (to do with David perhaps?). I have emailed her offering help. We shall see what happens!

Well, that didn't take long. Lets get going!

Quote:
Thanks for emailing me, ellipses. I haven't been here very long, but I can tell
there's something weird going on. I'm stuck here for another five years at
least, and it's going to be quite a while before I can... well. Let's just say
I might have made a mistake coming here. This, if you knew me, wouldn't come as
much of a surprise.

Anyway... I found myself in Max's workspace and there was something, uhm, tucked
away in a drawer. I think it's his "reminder" about his password, which I could
really use. I have a couple hunches about things but I need his password to
check. Here it is:

The key to the key is in these four questions:

1. 0-375-42052-5 : 305 : What sort of distance?
2. To make a meringue, first abstract the eggs
3. Prufrock, 94, 7
4. The third son who is the mother.

BBKIAUXWZIXRFFJPLXOLHBSFYAA

Does this make any sense to you? Please send me an email if you can figure it
out. I think it will help everyone on the station if you can get me access
to... certain things.

Your Friend,
Hanna Redfoot

I got the reply as well, the formatting is a bit strange but we can discuss that later. The first clue is an isdn number and number of pages in the book - House of leaves. Well, I would guess the meringue one should be whisk? The final answer from the cles is obviously the key to the vigenere code at the bottom.

The first number is an ISDN number.

I imagine if you go to page 305 of the book, the answer will be obvious.

Edit: Embedded huge, forum-stretching URL. -SpaceBass

In the book:

"The major feature of the House is the doorway which randomly appears in the east wall of the living room. The entrance leads to the Hallway known as the Endless Corridor, a passage that wildly varies in overall length. On its inital discovery it appeared to be a mere ten feet, though on the final expedition the hallway stretched on infinitely. Exploration into the corridors branching off from the main Hallway may eventually lead one to a large cavern dubbed The Great Hall. In the center of the Great Hall is the Spiral Staircase, whose diameter and length also vary greatly from expedition to expedition, at one point stretching on for a distance bypassing the circumfrence of the Earth."

Also, the Prufrock reference may be this:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot
http://www.bartleby.com/198/1.html
The 7th word on the 94th line of the poem is "from"

Prufrock, I expect, refers to TS Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."

Line 94 is "After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,"

Word 7 of that line is "tea" - which I expect is the answer to this part.

Edit - Ah... deadman came up with something different for this one. I saw that version of the poem as well, but I didn't think the line numbers were right. They didn't start counting until after the six lines of Italian text in the beginning. So, it could be "from", but I think "tea" is more likely to be the answer. http://www.cs.amherst.edu/~ccm/prufrock.html is the version I used, by the way.

You know, I wondered about that as well. I found several versions of the poem, but this was the only one with line numbers. Since yours did not have numbers, I am not so sure? Because I am sure that whatever copy the people at Ares have must have numbers. Anyway, it's good to point out it could be either.

I think that should be "separate". You only use egg whites to make meringue.

If you look at House of Leaves on amazon.com, you can search inside the book.

Search for "distance" and one of the choices leads you right to the answer (it says page 295, but it actually takes you to page 305).

"I'm too muddled to do the math but it doesn't take a genius to realize I'm an impossible distance down."

What sort of distance? An "impossible" distance.

Edit: Now I'm starting to think "from" is more likely for the answer to 3. "Impossible separate from" starts to sound like a clue. Any ideas on #4?

good point Embarassed

If we use the clues so far as the vigenere key you get

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
TPVUICPVOEFNQBSPSTJUTPSFYAA

Then rot 25 to get

SOUTHBOUNDEMPERORSITSOREXZZ

So we are almost there...

**edit** oops used seperate instead of separate which caused answer to be emparor instead of emperor!
