From the Last Resort Retrieval site:
Quote:
* Art theft is the fourth largest criminal activity in the world, behind only drugs, money laundering, and illegal arms trading.
* Every year thousands of artworks are stolen.
* Only 15% of stolen art is recovered thru normal channels.
* The other 85%...? That's where we come in.
Last Resort Retrieval is one of the only full time investigative companies focused solely on high-end art recovery. We cut through the red tape of police, international boundaries, security services, and insurance companies to provide you with what you want the most: the return of your priceless possession.
Our recovery rate for cases undertaken stands at 82%, a figure that speaks for itself.

The phone number does work and you can leave a message. Anyone brave enough to try? I chickened out and hung up. The address also seems to be real. Anyone live in NY who wants to check it out?

The Login boxes at LRR have a hardcoded javascript which does not allow entry.
The submit button leads us to http://iannet.lastresortretrieval.com/ which seems to be empty, but I suspect there are hidden files/folders because login.cgi exists and redirects us to the homepage.
EDIT: Not to be outdone by Ian, Nisha also has a Net: http://nishanet.lastresortretrieval.com/ with a server side username/password

As somone noticed somewhere else, the image in the background of the Last Resort site looks to have some kind of map in it. Look at the top part of the image, above the Caravaggio.
I may be wrong, but I think it's part of a Japanese map of the Paris subway.
Possibly the part from the Tour Eiffel to Pont Neuf, but this just is a wild speculation, I compared the image with a bunch of actual Paris maps and it's far from a perfect match.

Ok we've been locked out and now it's password protected
Anyway it clearly means we weren't supposed to find it yet, but at least we know how much potential this thing has.
Just a note to anyone who grabbed some of it or has it cached.. DON'T post it or discuss it.. Keep it to yourself--I'm sure we'll get to it in due time, and at least you have something to look forward to
you can of course try and figure out the password..

I'm fairly certain the Flash at http://www.lastresortretrieval.com/ is new. It cycles through multiple artworks now.

yes, it's new. The first version featured a fixed image, Caravaggio's Bacco .
I'm trying to identify all the paintings portrayed in the current Flash; There is at least another Caravaggio, maybe more than one, and at first glance the style suggests that most ofthe paintings are from Italian painters between 1450 and 1650; maybe there's also a Rembrandt, and I have little or no idea about a couple of them. I'll do some more research, just in case this may hide a clue.

I sent an e-mail to IanSPLAT lastresortretrieval.com that said the following...
'What do you really do? How do you get the paintings back from the theif? Why has the last resort retrieval site changed? Are the paintings in the flash paintings you and Nisha have 'rescued'?'
so... I await an anwser...

There's also The sacrifice of Isaac by Caravaggio.
EDIT: and just to be complete here's Caravaggio's Bacchus

I work a couple blocks away, I'd be willing to swing by. Think I might want to get my camera first, just in case.
Any clue as to what to say or do?

Sure.. go there and walk through the main door .. If there's anyone there ask for Suite 517. If it exists, see if there are any signs.. if it looks promising from the outside (Last Resort Retrieval logo on the door, etc) then knock and see what happens!
If there is no Suite 517, walk out and enter the mailbox place. Ask them if Suite 517 could actually refer to Box 517.. no need to find out who the owner is, that's OOG
Good luck

My wife goes to school across the street from there. She checked it out.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's a plain old apartment building. The doorman told her that any mail addressed to a "Suite" at that address goes to the Mailbox Etc located in the building (street level). She took some pics, which I can post tomorrow, but I don't think it'll help.
Probably OOG.

Suite 517 I've had a mailbox with Mail Boxes Etc. (Before they turned into "The UPS Store") twice before, and each time the term used for the mailbox was different. Once someone said that there was a Mail Boxes Etc. nearby that was the first thing that I thought about. I hope that no one is thinking about finding out who owns that box and where they live... that would be bad.
