Oh Good Grief.

Adrian Hon is out of game. Adrian Hon's character, Adrian Hon, is in-game. Like when you draw yourself, and animate it into an adventure. You yourself are not in the animation. Your character, which is you, is.

Sorry to get off-topic and OOG, but ... Exactly what Alex Smith said, this even has a name in the book world. It's called meta-fiction. So what we have here is meta-fiction contained in un-fiction (*sigh*). For a great book example of this read (un-game-related potential spoiler ahead)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Dark Tower series, wherein Stephen King makes himself and some real events from his life a very important part of the story. King, the author, is not "in book", but King, the character (who is an author) is "in book"

OK, back to the game

Hmm, from the new editorial:
Quote:
Master Kiteway himself sent on to us a veritable flood of communication with Earth residents who both offered us aid and defended the Academy's efforts.

...which leads me to believe that Sente is censoring the emails he's passing on 'cause I've been running a one-man poison pen campaign against him in the hope of attracting the Sentinel's attention.
Quote:
We warmly welcome our Earthly readers, and encourage their input on how to establish a fair and intelligent two-way dialogue between our civilisations.

The problem there being how to hold a 'fair' conversation about Sente when Sente's picking and choosing who gets a voice...

Re: the Adrian Hon ordeal.

I'm not sure how many people noticed it, but there was an article, in which Adrian, as per google translation, said:

Quote:
There is a very good reason which enables me to say that I am implied in Perplex City, but I cannot explain it now.

I'm sort of expecting Adrian to be making an appearance in the game as himself. Perhaps a better translation can give us a more exact estimate of what to expect.

Now, I suggest that we all take a deep breath before we start devising ways of communicating with the PMs in-game, and especially of competing with them. They are still the PMs, and they alone can choose the means through which they are going to be contacted. And I somehow suspect that if and when they do want to be contacted, they will set up their own contact channels - as opposed to leaving this kind of stuff up to us Wink As far as "competing" with them - well, heh, that necessitates some sort of direct contact with the characters. Take out the "technology" that the PM/Academy team set up to transfer communication to and from Perplex City, and what have you got?

in-game; out of game

Quote:
Are we now competing against Adrian Hons group to find the cube, if not why doesn't he contact us? As was said above by Demontague, do we therefore need some web presence in game (i.e. not unforums)?

We are Adrian's group. Just to clarify, whether you consider the real life Adrian in-game or just his character named Adrian Hon in-game, don't expect him to be in touch with us. He won't post here or show up in chat either as a character or a Puppet Master. I doubt that a seperate web presence is needed just so Adrian or any other character can advise us, he has the whole game at his disposal if he needs to reach us.

for those having trouble, here is the plotline.

Sente and the academy monitor earth through their connection. Note our love for games. Some may have even played our ARG's. Cube gets stolen, tracked to earth. Sente knows he needs a BUNCH of people earthside to track it down. decides to contact hon. Says, hey bud, im from another world, heres proof. (whatever the proof was). I need your help. we need to create a group of treasure hunters, and have a way to make them do our bidding, whether or not they believe us. I think an ARG would work. but you need a team of people to run the arg. Start recruiting. since its a combination between our worlds, lets call the recruiting project syzygy.

EVERYTHING is in game. in fact, unfic should be considered ingame, imo.

(and i wouldnt be so snappy about it if i didnt have a 20 page synopsis and about 50 pages of actual writing of a book with this EXACT bloody plotline i started writing about 3 years back...)

Hmm... That actually makes quite a lot of sense. Nice spec!

OMG, I was just thinking about this last night. A lot. I came to the conclusion that this is not a normal ARG, even with my limited experience. I agree with you Brat, Adrian and the other PM's are in game. In a way they've became their own puppetmasters. And, as they're characters, in theory we should be contacting them as much as Sente... Actually, that doesn't sound right... Confused

Anyway, what if all this is telling us that there isn't supposed to be a curtain?

(Don't worry, my brain melted with this as well)

Makes you wonder.. is this even a game?

I see we have a difference of opinion here. In my view, just because Adrian's name is mentioned, doesn't mean that everything is in-game. Adrian has worked out a nice way to close the curtain after all the pre-game chats and publicity by explaining that he was creating the game with Sente all along. Time will tell what role Adrian will play in the story.

Meanwhile, the players (us) still need a place to play the game. The place we have chosen is this forum. So I suggest we continue to treat this forum as out-of-game.

Thanks for that summary Rose, that does make sense.

I agree Unforums are [i]always[/] OOG.

I didn't mean to start an argument - I was just throwing thoughts about!

Saying that, at least this conversation is on record for the less experienced ARGers [/tongue in cheek]

ARGs are bloody complex things!

arguments

heh, we aren't arguing, just expressing our opinions. Smile

One of the many things we do well is to "agree to disagree" with no hard feelings on either side. I think that ability is one of the reasons the ARG community works.

This is astonishing! This could be seen the other way around. Perplex city exist, because noone would create so much informqtion about Perplex city if it didn't really exist. In fact, this is NOT an ARG, this is reality!

Incidently, I agree with the above spec that everything is in game even unfiction. (cf. the future : "Nice Spec. Care for a drink?")

a couple of points.

1. Adrian was mentioned in relation to an article which actually did appear in the Times newspaper. That was the actual Adrian, not some character. I stand by what I said before and what LeakingPen put slightly better.

2. UF is always and will always be 100% out of game. End of story. It should never be referenced or visited by any characters as stated in some rules somewhere I think. If UF is ever mentioned by a press article also containing comment from a PM, we should all just ignore it and continue as normal.

Hopefully this will be the end of the matter.
