[UPDATE] April 6th (Bluetooth Cracked!)

There's a new IRC chat here:http://iannet.lastresortretrieval.com/ian/001182.html. Ian's cracked using the German bluetooth, and has found a picture.

The picture is in the Personal section here: http://iannet.lastresortretrieval.com/ian/001181.html

I can definitely make out a W.

I kicked up the contrast a little ... it looks to be the VIN of an Audi as seen through the windshield ... you can see the photographer's reflection in the windshield as well on the right of the image, holding up the device he used to take the photo:

jpd from chat has been emailing Nisha letting her know what we know about Ian - namely that he's in a motel in Union City. Nisha has been looking, but can't find him. She emailed Ian telling him that his "hacker friends" have been ratting him out, but that she's too tired to chase him anymore tonight. She hopes that he'll get back to her.

Audi VIN

I tried to enhance the pic a little more. I don't know if it is any better than the other one. I came up with this VIN
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
WAUHF68P46A000198

This is a valid VIN and would be from the model year 2006. As noted in another section, Audi claims a 2006 was stolen but gave the VIN for a 2005. Maybe this is the real stolen car.

The only problem here is

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Your 6th digit should be a letter. Maybe.

Ok, did some tests with the check digit. Presuming every number is known except digit #6 (and I did my math correctly), the test digit turns out correctly if there's an F, W...or 6. Maybe I am incorrect -- I was just guessing off other Audi VINs.

For those who want to check, number conversions for the letters:

6, 1, 4, 8, 6, _, 8, 7, 4, 6, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 9, 8

are multipled by these numbers

8 7 6 5 4 3 2 10 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

and then added together. Then find the remainder when dividing by 11 -- that will be the check digit.

[Note: the 9th digit is the check digit.]

Also, hmm:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

We found 2 record(s) for this vehicle
VIN: WAUHF68P46A000198
Year: 2006
Make: Audi
Model:
Style/Body: Unspecified
Engine:
Country of Assembly: Germany

Carfax claims the VIN is invalid, though.

Most Audi model codes digits, 4 to 8, are letter-letter-number-number-letter. In fact, most Audi A4's made after 2000 are coded xx68E but there are some occassional variations, so a model HF68P is reasonable and would indicate an A4 that is slightly non-standard.

I see that now. The check digit works correctly now so you're mostly likely correct on all the digits.

CyberGosse has emailed Ian back with a cleaned up version of the picture. Well, cleaner. It's still kinda hard to make out some of the numbers. He asks Ian to catch him on IRC to discuss why Gunter would take a picture of a VIN.

Nisha's got a new email from Ian asking her to give him 48 hours to figure out what Gunther was doing.

Since the new VIN points to a new car, Ian put up the relavent shipping document in his personal folder. So now we have to track this car..

There is an earthcross.com, but it's currently under construction.
